                     So since i'm really late in my reading due to medical problem, today won't be a steampunk romance like i wanted( i will try to review more of those before the end of the month) but a paranormal romance. So Today is my opinion on he second book of the Immortal Guardians by Dianne Duvall.

My opinion:

         It’s difficult for me to write this review because I loved the first book of the series so much and now the second book let me quite disappointed. It’s still well written and the book isn’t bad but I’m afraid too see how the story will go.

In this book, Dianne Duvall developed the romance around Marcus and Ami and I must admit that she kept their personalities like they were described in the first book that’s perfect. We also learn more about Ami’s past and what happened for her to be captive in the first book. So far so good, but after it starts going wrong for me. Seth is still there of course as the prince of the immortals and we get some information about his origin- there it stopped to make sense for me. Yes we could have guessed something like that from the explanation in the first book “ “Darkness Dawn”, it’s not really my problem.  What I really disapproved was how he changed his opinion. First he is there to protect the immortals and he gives them order to be careful, not get caught etc…. perfectly normal and understandable and next only Ami counts. Even if they should die or be tortured it’s good as long as Ami is safe. I hate that, perhaps I’m partial because I love Sarah but I think she has sacrificed enough and perhaps in a way as much as Ami so the favouritism Seth is demonstrating doesn’t bode well with me.

Yes there is a bigger scheme than the immortals against the vampires and yes there are a secret organisation that is acting against both, that’s quite a classic plot; nothing wrong with that. Yes Ami is also special and needs to be protected now I’m not happy with the ways and the reasons. Seth isn’t honest with the immortals and after protecting them he will use them as simple pions for his bigger battle, and they accept that? Roland isn’t against the idea that Sarah could be sacrificed just on a whim of Seth…no protest…. Too strange for me.

I guess I will see how the story will go for a bit but it has dropped from my list of “ priority: to be bought” at least for a moment.

But I digress, for I am here to share my secret with you.

One afternoon I was walking down Hollywood Road, wearing my favourite pair of thin cotton cut-off trousers, and a baby-T-shirt. In that eighty-degrees-heat the less one wore the better, and I had learnt very quickly that even wearing jeans felt claustrophobic in that climate. Cotton was best, to keep the skin ventilated. Rain had started pattering down, and a slight breeze rising from the sea crept up, enveloping me in its cooling embrace before fading away. I raised my eyes in delight and put out my hand to catch the drops of calm in the palm of my hand. “Thank you, one above!” My phone rang just then, startling me out of my dialogue with the greater force of nature.

“Enjoying your walk?” It was the man I had met last night at the salsa bar. Hong Kong—believe it or not—is a salsa hotspot, and most nights I managed to make it to the gym and then onto a salsa class to give myself over to the rhythm of my heart and the pure enjoyment of becoming one with the music. I was a novice and he was obviously a seasoned dancer. I was flattered by his attentions, and for the rest of the evening we twirled, sashayed and swayed together.

Seemed he was in the bus that had just gone by and seen me. “I saw you talking to yourself” he told me that night. I blushed, wondering why it felt like he had caught me in the act of making love to myself. Perhaps because at that very moment I had been one with the universe, in a very private place, wearing my heart on my sleeve and he had seen a vulnerable side to me that I had kept to myself so far?

                   It's with a great pleasure that i introduce you today to Redemption, first book of the series Penton Legacy by Susannah Sandlin. This very friendly author accepted to send me a copy so i could review this and i can't tell you how happy i'm. I absolutely adored it and i'm so happy to share it with you.

My opinion:

          After reading some excerpts since I follow the author, I had to read this book and I’m not disappointed at all. Susannah Sandlin exceeded my expectations I mean apart from the story the book in itself  is a real treasure, paper of high quality and all a real splendour that will be cherished. For the books’ Lovers, that’s something that deserves recognition.

Now about the story, I really enjoyed the originality of the concept. In the paranormal romance genre actually there  some similar big lines that a lot of authors follow and it’s not bad at all but the originality of one or another are a great bonus. Susannah Sandlin do gave us a new universe, in this one human beings are not rare and vampires are quite normal  yes they are stronger than us, heal faster, have mental abilities but  no special powers from being vampires. The ones who have some magical, mystical powers had them as human as well like with the “young” Hannah.  If you were a normal, common human you will be a common vampire as well.

These vampires are in fact an endangered species and I found that idea really interesting to start with.  Like often they have to keep their existence a secret, it hasn’t been a difficulty for them until now because of a  big pandemic  a lot of humans died and to survived they created a vaccine that unknown to them is deadly to vampires and make their blood poisonous. A great protection against vampires? Yes, but also a higher risk for the few who aren’t vaccinated , the starving vampires are more dangerous than never and a black market at all start to appears when they are fighting over a small quantity of people.

For me, it was really important since that explains better the personality and actions of the characters. Aidan was a farmer and in a way still is. He knows he has to take care of the humans because he needs them to survive and a human needs to be respected  not  breed like animals thus he creates a sort of family where everyone need the others. The humans need the protection and help, the vampires their blood and for some their presence. All are linked together. Aidan is really protective and also strict, he checks each person, vampire or human, who wishes to join the community and he does it himself.  Kidnapping Krys is something that goes against what he believes and in the same time it’s the only way to protect the group; for Aidan that’s really difficult but he is ready to face her wrath, to loose his reputation if that’s’ helps the majority. Disturbing? Sure, but how often are we confronted to such a choice and it’s not easy, at least he wants to do right.

For Krystal , her kidnapping is in fact quite positive.  For a long time, she is fleeing the memory of her father who abused her and wants her back. She has fought for her life and her dream of becoming doctor and in the same time she never took the time to heal herself. She has panic attack, nightmares and her abduction helps her to put things in perspective and to discover what she really wishes to be and to have. I loved how she could be practical when she give Aidan advices and still be so vulnerable.

The romance is moving, the way they both have to accept the past and closes those relationships that forbid them to advance and how they are learning about themselves in the eyes of their soulmates, so romantic.  I would just have loved if she didn’t had to make the choice or at least not so soon.

The intrigue is well constructed too, we are learning that the tribunal isn’t as neutral as it says and Aidan’s idea is making a lot of envious. He wanted to be independent before but now he really now he must be very careful when choosing who can be trusted. His brother was just a pawn and the threat is bigger that they expected.

The others characters are fascinating too, Hannah, the child vampire with magical powers, I felt sad for Lucy and her choices and I absolutely loved Mirren.  He is an old vampire and before his life in Penton he was the executioner for the Tribunal. However, he isn’t a killing machine without mind, and he started to be hurt but the kills he had to make when he wasn’t sure he could trust the tribunal. He even preferred to die than to be their tool. We don’t learn yet what made him doubt the tribunal but we know that’s when he wanted to die that he met Aidan. He is one of his trusted lieutenants but he doesn’t want to be more. He is strong and very intelligent but really afraid of the responsibilities. I’m really happy that the second book will be about him.

Really, it’s a great book and even if I wasn’t well I couldn’t put it down. I would recommend it to the lover of paranormal romance and to those who like to see our dear vampires struggle with their humanity^^

The second book Absolution should be out in October 2012 and I can’t wait for it!

            Cette semaine j'ai eu le très grand plaisir de recevoir un colis qui m'a transporté de bonheur, en effet Susannah Sandlin avait accepté de m'envoyer une copie de son livre pour que je vous donne mon avis dessus et ce fut un vrai plaisir. Au départ j'ai pensé faire un avis bilingue cependant lorsque j'ai vu la longueur finale de ce que j'ai rédigé je me suis décidée pour vous le fournir en deux posts et voici sans attendre la version française.

Mon avis:

     Etant membre du blog de l’auteur depuis un certain temps, j’ai eu la chance de lire en avant-première plusieurs extraits et suite à ceux-ci je me devais de lire ce roman. Je peux dire que je n’ai pas été déçue le moins du monde, c’est même meilleur que ce que j’espérais, Susannah Sandilin à largement dépassé mes attentes et j’en suis ravie. Ma première réaction a été vis-à-vis du livre lui-même qui est un magnifique ouvrage fait avec du papier de qualité et d’un grammage supérieur à ce qu’on aurait pu s’attendre d’un « paperback » il est splendide. Et pour tout amoureux des livres, cela mérite d’être noté.

    Concernant l’histoire, j’ai vraiment apprécié l’originalité du concept. Lorsque on lit beaucoup de romances paranormales, il y a des grandes lignes qui reviennent sans arrêts à en devenir de vrais classiques et  si c’est bien écrit ce n’est pas dérangeant mais les touches d’originalité sont de vrais bonus. Susannah Sandlin est parvenue à nous offrir un nouvel univers dans lequel les humains ne sont pas en voie de disparition et les vampires sont assez normaux. Certes, ils sont plus forts que nous, guérissent plus vite et disposent de quelques pouvoirs mentaux mais ils n’ont pas de pouvoirs spéciaux (pyrotechnie etc). Ceux qui auraient  des pouvoirs magiques ou mystiques ne les ont que parce qu’ils les avaient déjà en étant humains comme c’est le cas de la « jeune » Hannah . Si vous étiez un simple humain, vous serez un  vampire lambda.

Les vampires sont en fait ici une espèce en danger et je trouvais qu’il s’agissait d’une idée de départ à fort potentiel. Comme souvent ils doivent garder leur existence secrète et cela ne leur a pas posé de véritable difficulté de part le passé mais tout a changé lorsque une épidémie mondiale s’est répandue provoquant de nombreux décès. Pour survivre, les humains ont conçu un vaccin mais ce qu’ils ignorent c’est que ce dernier est un poison pour les vampires qui ne peuvent plus consommer le sang des personnes vaccinées. Une bonne protection contre les vampires ? Oui mais cela crée également plus de risques pour les quelques humains qui n’ont pas été vaccinés car les vampires affamés sont plus dangereux que jamais et un marché noir et tout ce que cela implique apparaît même lorsque les vampires se battent pour les rares personnes disponibles.

Pour moi c’était vraiment important car cela façonne la personnalité des personnages et donne un éclairage sur leurs actions. Aidan était un fermier et dans un sens il l’est toujours. Il sait qu’il faut faire attention à sa source de subsistance.  Il prends soin des humains qui sont vital à sa survie mais il sait également qu’un être humain a besoin d’être respecté et ne peut pas être élevé comme du bétail. Il crée donc une communauté sur le modèle de la famille où chacun a besoin de l’autre. Les humains ont besoin de la protection des vampires et de leur aide face à certains vices et les vampires ont besoin de prélèvement de leur sang et pour certain de leur présence. Tout est lié. Aidan est vraiment protecteur et strict également, il conduit personnellement une audition de chaque personne vampire ou humaine qui souhaite rejoindre la communauté. Kidnapper Krys est quelque chose qui se heurte fortement à ses croyances mais dans le même temps c’est la seule solution pour protéger sa communauté, le groupe.  Il est dès lors prêt à prendre sur lui, à affronter sa colère et à sacrifier sa réputation si cela bénéficie à la majorité. Perturbant ? Assez oui mais ne sommes nous pas parfois confronté à des choix similaires et ce n’est jamais facile je crois, au moins il souhaite faire bien c’est déjà beaucoup.

Pour Krystal, au final son enlèvement est plutôt quelque chose de positif. Depuis longtemps elle ne fait que fuir son père et qui la battait et ses souvenirs. Elle s’est battue pour rester en vie et réaliser son rêve de devenir médecin mais dans le même temps elle n’a jamais prit le temps dont elle avait besoin pour se soigner et surmonter son passé. Elle fait des crises d’angoisse, elle a des cauchemards or son enlèvement lui permets de remettre les choses en perspective et de découvrir qui elle souhaite devenir réellement et ce qu’elle souhaite avoir. J’ai beaucoup aimé comment elle gardé l’esprit très pratique lorsque elle donne des conseils à Aidan par exemple et en même temps reste fragile et vulnérable.

La romance est émouvante. La façon dont les deux protagonistes doivent faire la paix avec leur passé afin de pouvoir se tourner vers le futur et dont ils parviennent à se découvrir et s’accepter grâce au regard de l’autre, c’est très romantique. Le seul détail que j’aurai aimé différent est le choix que Krys doit faire, au moins que cela arrive plus tard dans leur relation.

L’intrigue est également très bien construite, en effet on apprend que le tribunal, l’organe des décideurs vampires, n’est aussi neutre qu’il veut bien le laisser entendre. Le projet d’Aidan fait bien des envieux, certains prennent peur à l’idée que cela devienne une véritable armée, d’autres le voient comme un garde-manger trop privé. Aidan voulait être indépendant et discret dès le début mais désormais il sait qu’il devra redoubler de vigilance lorsqu’il attribue sa confiance car la menace est bien réelle et se rapproche.

Les autres personnages ne sont pas en reste bien loin de là. La jeune Hannah est vraiment attendrissante, j’ai compatis avec Lucy et regretté ses choix et j’ai absolument adoré Mirren. Mirren est un « vieux vampire » qui par le passé était le bourreau attitré du tribunal ce qui lui vaut une réputation de brute et de tortionnaire sans pareil. Or il n’est pas une machine a tuer sans aucune conscience bien loin de là et lorsqu’il a commencé à avoir des doutes sur les motifs du Tribunal il a préféré se laissé mourir plutôt que d’être l’instrument d’un organe auquel il ne faisait plus confiance. On n’en sait pas encore beaucoup sur lui, on ignore par exemple qu’est-ce qui a été le déclencher de sa prise de conscience. Cependant on sait  c’est lors de cette  crise de rébellion qu’il a rencontré Aidan dont il est devenu un des fidèles lieutenants. Mirren ne souhaite pas être plus, il est satisfait de son rôle de soutien et ne se sent pas aptes à plus de responsabilités même si il est très fort et intelligent. Je suis ravie que le second livre se centrera plus sur ce personnage.

C’est vraiment un excellent livre que j’ai dévoré bien que malade et que je recommande à tous les fans de romances paranormales ainsi qu’à ceux qui se délectent de vampires au prise avec des crises de conscience tellement humaine. Le second tome est prévu pour le 9 octobre 2012 et je suis vraiment impatiente de retrouver Mirren et les autres.

Rage de Dents ( Maeve Regan 1) par Marika Gallman

Coucou à tous,

                         contrairement à ce que les derniers posts ont pu laisser penser, je n'ai pas oublié mes lecteurs francophones loin de là, cependant j'étais dans un tel état que je n'ai su lire que très peu de livres et rédiger des avis encore moins. Si tout se passe bien, ces vacances seront meilleures puisque je vous projette déjà un autre avis bilingue pour une nouvelle parution qui en vaut vraiment la peine.

Quoiqu'il en soit étant sur la voie de la guérison, j'ai recommencé à dévorer mes livres dont un en français ce qui comme vous le savez implique un avis rédigé dans langue de Molière la plupart du temps. Le sort a voulu que ce soit " Rage de Dents" premier tome de la nouvelle série de milady Maeve Regan par la jeune auteur francophe Marka Gallman.

Avant, ma vie était simple : l’université si j’en avais envie, les hommes quand j’en avais envie. Et je n’avais aucun problème qu’un barman ne puisse m’aider à résoudre.

Mais là, depuis un moment, rien ne va plus. Le type sexy qui me draguait a rendu son déjeuner quand on a voulu concrétiser.

J’ai cassé le nez du copain de ma meilleure amie, et elle ne l’a pas très bien pris. Lui non plus, d’ailleurs.

Ensuite, je me suis mise à faire des cauchemars.

Et tout ça, c’était avant qu'une bande de vampires décide de redécorer mon appart et qu'un colosse me kidnappe.

Quand je vous dis que ce n’est pas ma semaine…

Avis:

          Déception, j’avais lu d’autres avis avant de me laisser tenter par ce livre et je regrette vraiment  d’avoir cédé. Oh soyons réalistes, Marika Gallman écrit bien et un lecteur totalement néophyte dans ce genre de lecture y trouverait sûrement beaucoup de plaisir. Toutefois, pour les personnes qui lisent beaucoup de romans d’urban fantasy et de bit-lit voire romance paranormale « Rage de Dents » manque cruellement d’originalité.

Il ne s’agit pas ici d’être méchant envers une jeune et nouvelle auteur mais simplement d’honnêteté car je n’ai pas pu m’empêcher de faire parallèle sur parallèle avec d’autres livres et c’est tout bonnement ennuyant.

Le plus gros et évident parallèle est celui avec l’univers de Chasseuse de la nuit  - Night Huntress- par Jeaniene Frost publiée en France chez le même éditeur. Maeve et Cat sont toutes deux des hybrides mi-vampires mi autres choses dans un monde où ces derniers sont inexistants ou si rares que un vampire ayant un enfant ne semble n’être qu’un mythe ou une légende.

Jusque là j’aurais pu dire simple coïncidence, pas de souci mais le parallèle va bien plus loin jusque dans le déroulement du récit et la personnalité d’autres personnages. Attention si vous n’avez pas lu l’un des deux romans car je risque fortement de dévoiler des détails mais ce n’est que pour mieux illustrer mon propos.

Dans une série comme dans l’autre, le personnage féminin ignore au début qu’elle est un hybride ou ce que cela implique. Dans les deux cas, elles sont faites prisonnières par un vampire qui suite à leurs « négociations » devient leur instructeur en combat et enseignant docteur es mondes et créatures de la nuit.
Le parallèle ne s’arrête pas encore là car Lukas comme Bones ont des soucis de sociabilité et des difficultés à faire confiance ( Bones reste moins solitaire que Lukas jusqu’à un certain point)

Les deux filles ont comme objectif de détruire leur père vampire et c’est leur raison pour accepter « l’entraînement » Les deux tombent sous le charme de leur instructeur qui lui aussi développent de fort sentiments à leur égard et finissent par vouloir les protéger avant tout  quitte à mettre en péril or retarder la mission qu’ils avaient en premier lieu. Chacune des héroïnes est fortement marquée, blessée, par la relation qu’elle ont eue avec un petit ami humain dans le passé avec cependant la distinction que Maeve reste proche d’Elliot au contraire de Cat.

Dans le déroulement du récit, vers la fin de chacun des premiers tomes, la dite héroïne bien que très amoureuse se met en tête de sauver son vénérable amant vampire et pour ce faire l’allume avant de le trahir et de tenter de disparaître.

Je suis vraiment désolée mais ça fait beaucoup, beaucoup trop de similitudes pour que j’accroche à l’histoire elle même car, il y en a d’autres mais ça finirait par faire trop long pour un avis. Je sais bien sur qu’il y a des grands classique dans ce genre de romans, certes j’en conviens mais tout l’art d’un bon récit est justement d’arriver à en jouer et à les faire oublier ici c’est tout le contraire donc je ne pense vraiment pas que je vais continuer à dépenser plus de 7euros par livres pour cette série et entre les deux je préfère vraiment Chasseuse de la nuit qui a plus d’humour et plus de fluidité dans la narration. Pour l’effort et parce que l’écriture n’en reste pas moins assez bonne j’attribue un 3.

                       Summer is already there and finally no school even if i have a lot of textbooks to read since i was too sick in June. But Summer means Sun ( or at least i hope because it's raining too much here) and Joy and what a better joy is than to receive and read books , or receive some gifts from someone who share the same passion? However what is great in the blogger community is that you don't need to wait summer, the girls from Booksoulmates created the Random Act of Kindness where the participants can share the love of books anytime by sending something to some else to make him/her happy. It's a pleasure for me  to participate once again. As you already know if it's not your first time on the blog, i've entered several challenges including one for which i i have to try a new subgenre of romance each month. For July it's steampunk romance and from the list of suggestions we received i had some books ready.

One of those i really wanted to read for a long time and Mary kindly gifted it to me as a RAK, it's a paranormal romance with a twist of historical and steampunk so perfect to start this month.  Here come the first book of the Darkest London series by Kristen Callihan: "Firelight"

My opinion:

          Splendid! What a wonderful travel in the London society from 19^th century with the mystical legends and myths being described in a realistic way. Secret society, sorcery mixed with the world of the high society and its endless gossips, the mix is perfect.

I loved to see how Miranda was a strong independent woman in a world where she should have been just a pawn she fought to be herself and keep her honour. Yes she did wrong and she is the most virtuous girl for the time but in a way she is really modern. She is suffering because of her father’s action and a misplaced guilt that makes her vulnerable.  She needs Archer’s love to discover that she can see her power as a gift not a curse but she is slow to offer him her trust. Kristen constructed her psyche really well. Having been rejected by the one she loved, more important that she trusted because she admitted to him being different is something striking, offensive that influence her personality. When she finally admits the truth to Archer it’s the moment when she trusts him completely without any reserve. The moment she becomes herself and stop being afraid.

Archer isn’t a hero like the others. He has a disability, one that casts him out from the society. He knows that‘s partially his fault so while trying to find a remedy he doesn’t arbour bad feeling against his long ago friend. Their rejection hurt him but he is more repulsed by the monster he could become. He doesn’t live until meeting Miranda just tries to survive. However, as soon as he discovers her, life changes. He wants her to love him; he wants to be able to be near her, to save her. She becomes his treasure and even if she perfectly knows that she isn’t defenceless he won’t confide. He will want to keep her in the dark, keeping the truth from her because he, like her, is afraid of a new rejection.  I loved to see how gradually she becomes more important than his secret, how for her he becomes social one more and even jealous of Ian.  Ian is also a great character, that I cannot hate when I knew instantly what his true nature his (my favourite supernal creature^^;;) he really wants to help but won’t admit it so  he acts arrogantly. (Typical from a frustrated alpha)

A wonderful story that I don’t regret reading at all. It could be a stand alone without problem but Kristen decided to make a series and the next book is coming soon with guess how? Yes Ian ^^ how could I resist to give it a try when the first book was so great? Fan of paranormal romance and steampunk or historical romance give it a try!
