Challenges Wrap up

Hi,

i thought i was time to do a small wrap up for the challenge i've entered so here it is.

For the 2012 TBR reading pile Challenge: i've read 16books so i move up my goal to level 2: a Friendly Hug (11 to 20 books) and if things go well i will perhaps move up again but one step at the time.

2012 Vampire reading Challenge from Tales from the Crypt: I was hoping to reach level 1 ( 1-5books) and i'm already starting level 3 with 11 books read

2012 Paranormal romance reading challenge from Tales from the Crypt: i've reached my goal of 1-5books for Level 1. I'm not sure if i will move up because of the exceptions, if it paranormal romance but with vampires it doesn't count so i will have to see if i still have some books for this challenge before taking any decision.

Romance and Me Reading Challenge Hosted by Stella from Ex-Libris: For the subgenre paranormal romance so far i've read 13 books and for the subgenre romantic suspense: 8books. I still have some for both categories but i give priority to the month's subgenre so it will have to wait a bit before more of these two.

2012 ebook Challenge: i've reached my goal of level 1: Floppy disk 5ebooks. I will perhaps move up to the next level but i'm not sure yet.

And lastly for the only french challenge i've entered Challenge romance paranormale: i've moved to level 3 with already 13 books read ( perhaps more if the ebooks count)

I'm quite happy so far but i prefer to stay prudent and move slowly.

all the best

The Keeping ( The Law of the Lycans book2) by Nicky Charles

I told you i wanted to do at least one more review for the Challenge Romance and Me so here is my last ( except if i manage to read and review another book today) review of this month for the romantic suspense genre.

It's the second book of the Law of Lycans series and at the moment the book i loved the less for this suggenre and for this serie too.

Summary/ description from Smashwords :

Ryne Taylor was a sexy bad-ass Alpha set on establishing a new pack. Melody Greene was a journalism student researching his work as a photographer—or so she said. But could Mel really be trusted or had she stumbled upon his secret? And if she knew, could Ryne save himself and the pack he’d left behind without enacting a deadly ancient law known as The Keeping? Sequel to The Mating.

My opinion:

As much as I loved the prequel and the first book, I had a lot of difficulties with this one. The beginning is really slow, so slow that I had to put it aside, read several others books before continuing reading this one and that’s because I don’t like giving up.
The book complete isn’t bad but I’ve got the feeling that he wasn’t well balanced, there wasn’t an equilibrium the beginning is really slow and the second part of the book is filled with tension and urgency. We don’t get the feeling the urgency is growing slowly until the culminate point not it just drops like that on the reader. Also, I managed to guess some important part of the book around chapter 5… too quickly for me. So the intensity wasn’t constant. And you have to go to the second part of the book to start to feel immersed in the book.

Ryne is being an Alpha just adequate and for me it clash with what we saw of him earlier. I mean he needs his second to calm him and the third one to dispel any misunderstanding with the humans…it should be him that keeps his cool but no. After that, he isn’t violent enough when it’s required.
Melody is being a stupid girl, once she has moral and ethic, the second after she is just money hungry. After, again, she changes. Either she is loyal or she isn’t, there is no middle and circumstances. For me okay she is just a student reporter but still she should know what she want and stay true to it not act like she did to do the opposite after.
Given all the things happens, I’m surprise Kane didn’t take over, it would have been a normal decision with all that was at stake. I’m also sad for Lucy, she deserved better and it could have worked with another twist of the plot.

To be honest, now I ‘m quite apprehensive to read the third book, I will do it yes but not too soon and only because I know that the prequel, written later, is really good so I hope I will love the next book like I did the first one.

Hexed ( The iron druid Chronicles book 2) by Kevin Hearne

Hello!,
For the last day of the month i give you my opinion on Hexed second book of the series The Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne.

Genre: urban fantasy

Short description from goodread :

Atticus O'Sullivan, last of the Druids, doesn't care much for witches. Still, he’s about to make nice with the local coven by signing a mutually beneficial nonaggression treaty when suddenly the witch population in modern-day Tempe, Arizona, quadruples overnight. And the new girls are not just bad, they're badasses with a dark history on the German side of World War II.

With a fallen angel feasting on local high school students, a horde of Bacchants blowing in from Vegas with their special brand of deadly decadence, and a dangerously sexy Celtic goddess of fire vying for his attention, Atticus is having trouble scheduling the witch hunt. But aided by his magical sword, his neighbor's rocket-propelled grenade launcher, and his vampire attorney, Atticus is ready to sweep the town and show the witchy women they picked the wrong Druid to hex

My opinion:

This book seemed more violent to me than the first one. The action is rapid and the reader like the hero doesn’t get a chance to rest before the end of it.  After beating his archenemy, Atticus could have hoped to take sometimes for himself but as it’s often forgotten when you beat someone powerful you just get more enemies. After dealing with a myriad of gods from nearly all pantheons, he must fight a demon that escaped the first time if he wants to stay on friendly terms with Coyote. After that, a bunch of bacchants, special kind of witches that gives a cult to Bacchus and are immune to most magic and kill people how turn them in bacchants like them. Like it wasn’t enough an old enemy, again a coven of witches, is returned allied with demons with the firm intention to kill him. Atticus needs all his allies and new ones if he wants to succeed.

What is now a novelty is the police, again there are troubles ahead but we also discover some interesting news on his neighbour. Kevin Hearne gives us a lot of hint to the future enemies and problems Atticus will have to fight but even has he drops them, he keep the tension very high. He uses a lot of “holy” figures, we meet again the Morrigan and Birghit but we discover Mary (Yes the saint one) and Coyote.

Granuaile is starting her lessons to become a druid one day, Oberon is still the same even if he changed his fancy from Attila the Hunt to a “baba cool” all peace and love. I must admit that he is my favourite so clever and spirited dog ^^.Coyote was interesting but I would have liked more of him.

I love the book but a bit less than the first one and I’m a bit afraid for the next one. I’m getting used to the different language used and it’s really helping that the author put a listing of them in the beginning. However I was a bit put off by some of the new characters so I will see how they will be developed later.

A book to recommend to the fans of mythology and urban fantasy with funny situations (because yes there is fun too, thanks to Oberon in the majority of cases).

The Mating ( Book1 of the Law of The Lycan series) by Nicky Charles

Hello,

it's nearly the end of the month so i thought i was going to add some romantic suspense reviews for the challenge i'm entering. Today, it's The Mating by Nicky Charles. I was so happy after reading "Bonded" that i had to read this quickly and i don't regret it at all, it was fantastic so now  what do you think of this book?

Enjoy!

Summary/ description from smashword:

Elise had no idea when she came home that day that she'd end up mated to a complete stranger. A new Alpha and the need for an alliance between packs have made her a pawn Excerpt: She lay beside him, staring blankly at the ceiling. The deed was done. They were mated. It didn't matter that she had no love for him nor he for her. Political alliances were more important than feelings...

Story:

Elise found herself mated to a stranger in matters of hours when she was thinking about mating her childhood friend. For her that’s a shock even if her new mate,Kane, is trying to give her some time to adjust.  As soon as the mating is completed, he must return to his own pack and she has to leave everything she knows behind. It’s not easy for her to discover a new pack, adjust to being a mate and alpha female…even more when her mate isn’t there to help. This new pack has a lot of problem: one Oil Company wants to buy their land, the late leader was killed in what only seems to an accident and after that tragedy a challenge was issue for the next leader. Kane has won this challenge but didn’t kill his half-brother. Now there are some traps on their lands, one member of the pack is shot and there is some pollution around the river…too many coincidences Kane wants to find the culprit and a new mate isn’t his priority it seems

My opinion:

I enjoyed the story even if I was a bit put off by the mating just at the beginning. I think that if I didn’t read “Bonded” just before I wouldn’t have been able to enjoy the story as much as I did and it’s the reason I give only 4/5.
The characters are strong and the story interesting but the reader who start with this title could think that some information about the world is missing. We can’t understand which old law they speak of etc. Now When you concentrate on the plot you are immersed in it and I wanted so much to slap Kane and make him open his eyes. He is feeling so guilty for something that not his fault that he makes mistakes on mistakes…. *grrrrrrrr*

Elise is feeling lost at the beginning and who wouldn’t be given the same circumstances. However she is willing to try and she is more intelligent than we could have thought. At first we would like her to be more aggressive, to refuse the mating, to speak her mind but  as the story progresses we understand how it wasn’t possible for her. Her first pack was really traditional and saying no could have meant her death. As she try to adapt in her new pack, we learn with her and we can see how she becomes more independent even if her love for kane matures and grows.

A really good romantic paranormal suspense romance. I can’t wait to discover how Ryne will try to make his new pack.  But an advice, even if Bonded was written in 2012 it’s really a prequel to this one so you should read it first.

Short description from goodread :

Mom touched my underdress—a gown made six hundred years before—and her eyes widened as she rubbed the raw silk between thumb and forefinger. She turned and touched Lia’s gown. “Where did you get these clothes?”

Gabi knows she’s left her heart in the fourteenth century and she persuades Lia to help her to return, even though they know doing so will risk their very lives. When they arrive, weeks have passed and all of Siena longs to celebrate the heroines who turned the tide in the battle against Florence—while the Florentines will go to great lengths to see them dead.

But Marcello patiently awaits, and Gabi must decide if she’s willing to leave her family behind for good in order to give her heart to him forever.

My opinion:

This second book contains more violence than the first and Gabi endure much more too. However in the mist of these tortures, treacheries, illness and deaths the reader can also find good example of sacrifice, selfless, courage and honour. Firenze is against Sienna (and thus Castello Forelli) and Gabi and her sister are capital for both camps either as a symbol of courage and force either as bait, a valuable prize if captured. Being a hero is a good thing sometimes.

We discover that not all is how it seems and that there are some loyalties deeper than other. We find again Lord Paratore and he didn’t change at all, but we discover Lord Greco, a firenze Knight childhood friend of Marcello.
The tension is high and it helps to see a new aspect of the character. Gabi isn’t only a warrior she also has a deep instinctual sense of the politic. Stronger than a average modern girl, she can be captured, hurt and it takes more to break her. I’m not sure I could do the same in similar circumstances. She proves than she is very loyal and she admits her love for Marcello.

Marcello was true to his words and waited for her he even made some preparations (so perfect). He tries to protect them from the politic world too however seeing as he isn’t a lord but only the second son his power is less than some of his enemies. Even then, he still stays by her side and helps her at the best of his abilities. We also discover than Luca is fonder of Lia that he told her and he show how good of a friend and knight he is.

What I loved less is than the way mother and daughters think about the time travel experience. For a scientist, their mother doesn’t seem cautious enough for me. In the same time, I understand their motive but it’s a bit too selfish in my opinion.

The rhythm of the story is rapid and the writing immerses the reader in a past time that as much as we are happy to be safe here and now and despite the danger we would like to discover. It's quite intense.
I didn’t want to stop reading it and when it was time to eat it was really difficult to put this book aside and at the end you just want to jump on the next one. A really good book to recommend.

Score:  4/5

Short description from goodread :

In his old life as a Federal agent, Wyatt Blake lived wild. But now that he's parenting a teenage son, "square" is a name he wears with pride. Too bad Jordy doesn't agree. The only one who gets through to the boy is Kai Reynolds. Sure, she seems respectable now, but she used to be quite wild herself. Or so Wyatt's heard.

Danger finds Jordy, and drags Kai in, too. As Wyatt and Kai investigate the drug dealers targeting his son, they uncover a deadly link to Wyatt's own past. Now this unlikely duo needs to find the wild side each had thought long buried--for Jordy, and maybe for each other.

Story:

Wyatt Blake came back to his hometown with his son after the death of his wife and Jordan’s mother. He took a boring job and takes care of his son but for Jordan this life is hell. He hates this father he didn’t know 7month ago so strict and that made him leave the life he knew. They can’t communicate properly …until Kai, the owner of the music shop of the town intervenes. Jordan, called by her Jordy, comes everyday after school in secret, enjoying the music and trying to evade his life. When his father discover that he is quite aggressive with Kai but  after some researches he starts to admire her.  After sometimes, and telling her more than he wanted about his and Jordan’s life, he accepts her help and advice.

But even in this small town , the danger, Wyatt wanted to avoid to his son, is present and soon Jordan is in trouble. With the help of Kai, Wyatt start acting like his old self again, a federal cop and try to put an end to the problem. However, the danger wasn’t what he first thought and his old enemies are there for their revenge.

My opinion:

Interesting, i saw more the suspense in this one ( in comparaison with the first book of this subgenre i've read " The Final Mission") and i loved it. It was also more violent than the first book I’ve read but still quite mild. I loved the way Kai starts progressively to understand Wyatt and how he is starting to loose his attitude with her.
The origin of his life with Jordan is well thought to adapt to this kind of behaviour and story.

Very good for the readers who want a short story filled with romance and a bit of conflict parent-children.

Back cover description from goodread :

What do you do when your knight in shining armor lives, literally, in a different world?

Most American teenagers want a vacation in Italy, but the Betarrini sisters have spent every summer of their lives among the romantic hills with their archaelogist parents. Stuck among the rubble of the medieval castles in rural Tuscany, on yet another hot, dusty archaeological site, Gabi and Lia are bored out of their minds...until Gabi places her hand atop a handprint in an ancient tomb and finds herself in fourteenth-century Italy. And worse yet, in the middle of a fierce battle between knights of two opposing forces.

Suddenly Gabi's summer in Italy is much, much more interesting.

My opinion:

I really loved it. I wanted this book for a long time because of the plot. I often dreamed of going in the past so the time travel was very interesting for me and I’m not disappointed.  Gabriella, alias Gabi, is a strong heroine. Lost in a time she had an opportunity to learn more of it but wasn’t interested at the moment, she is trying to remember what she can to do the best of it. She isn’t crying, helpless waiting for something to happen. She tries to make it happen.
Her objective is to find and save her sister, for that she takes great risks , she stay the same even if it means to be seen not as a proper woman of the time she is in. And she even tries to do the right thing for the man she has come to love even if it means hurting herself. For that I admire her and she can be a example to some girls.
Her sister,Lia, isn’t left being but perhaps because she is younger she is also more egoistic. She doesn’t take in consideration her Gabi’s feeling before it’s too late and it’s sad but also understandable.
Marcello and Luca are strong and all knight so it’s difficult not to love them but I also appreciated Fortino who suffers but still make his best to help where and when he can.

In the story we can see how honour can clash with feeling, responsibility with dreams and it’s really well written. We find all what makes history: arranged marriage, poisoning, political alliances, traitors and heros.

A special mention to the cover not only the colour and elements are perfect for the story but it’s so smooth… I really appreciated it make the book seems even more valuable. However, what I would have liked  is to have as a bonus pages some drawing of the cloths for example so the younger readers could see more easily what the author speak of, or a drawing of the land, etc.

I can’t wait to read the others books of the series, and I recommend this book to the ones who love history, sweet romance and a bit of mystical feelings.

Summary/ description from Smashwords:

Reno’s a tough Enforcer for Lycan Link who finds himself drawn to Brandi but duty rules his life. Brandi, just on the edge of starting her career as a Disaster Control officer, falls for Reno at first sight, but are they really meant to be? Is it love or lust and does it really even matter? Enforcers and DCs don't get along...unless fate forces them to. Bonded precedes The Mating.

Story:

In a world were the Lycans live around humans they have their own history and problem similar to humans ones. In the past, when their laws were written, the purity was important to avoid extinction because of that the ones that loved humans and had baby with them were savagely killed as were the children.  When the situation became better, it was decided to  interpret the law differently. Mixed marriage were authorised and  children, called halves, born from them were considered people with rights as any others. However, history has shown that often some people don’t want these kinds of progress and some created groups called the Purists to try to make a comeback to the old ways. For them, half  and mixed blooded are just slaves with no right at all… just good to served and be killed. To protect these innocent Lycan Links was created  with a  part of the group called Enforcers sorts of special corps whose missions is to check that the rights are respected and interfere when it’s needed to save the one in needs. There are laws to protect the lycan with one parent human.

It was thought that the Purist had disappeared but now the Enforcers have proofs that it’s not the case and even worse they are spreading, taking over some clans and such. Reno is the best of the enforcer, knowing the danger he has planned to find new recruits for his squad and for that he goes teaching in the University, a place were lycans males and females go to learn  self-defence and to be controlled. It’s a place were only the strong willed go such as the future leader or the ones with a tendency to become rogue, lycan lost to their beast without humanity left.

During one lesson, he meets Brandi, a young strong willed woman and the make a fight demonstration that nearly falls out of hand.  Brandi loved him since the first time she saw him, it’s a last year and she has concentrated only on her works so this love very present isn’t acted upon…until the fight and that leads to the night after the final exam. Also intrigued Reno finish to accept the decision of his wolf and make love to her…against his principles he even leaves her his phone number and asks that she calls him. When they meet, Brandi is overjoyed she has passed as top of her class and even got her dream Job: DC Damage control officer, the one that create stories and lies to keep the existence of Lycan secret. However what she didn’t know was that DC and Enforcers don’t get along at all and when Reno shows how much he despites them she leaves angry. When won’t see each other before several months or years and each time they fight, argue and separate very angry. But fate seems determined to make them meet and work together….

Style:

Nicky Charles has created a world of his own for his serie.  The characters are well developed and to help the reader to understand the founding of this universe he uses the lessons the characters study and revise to remind them to us.

The rhythm is constant not too quick not to slow and he show the evolution on the long term with a story taking place during several years.

My opinion:

It’s the prequel to the first book of the trilogy but the four one published so we discover a world well constructed and I can’t wait to read the first book published to see if there are some evolutions or if it was so good since the beginning.
The story is full of actions and I was captivated by it, the romance is there, the plot is really interesting and the investigations so captivating…I didn’t know what to expect until the end and even the end… oh my….
I couldn’t stop myself to see the similitude with our real history and it was great and in the same time a bit worrying to see that even with all our efforts changes aren’t definitive and take times. I also appreciate the action of the author that gives us his stories free so we can make a donation of our choice.

I spend a good time with this book and I recommend it to the lovers of paranormal romance is a world well constructed and to the fans of werewolves

The February 14th Secret by Cindy Dees

Good evening,

I hope you got a very happy V-Day and if you haven't found your soulmate yet don't worry and don't forget to love yourself too.... i remember a manga when there was this lovely scene... a boy tell the young girl that is in love with him that when you offer a gift to someone, you want him to love it so at first you love the gift and that's the reason you choose it. When you love someone, you give him the most imprtant gift yourself and your love so to make it important you must love yourself first. I was crying when reading this scene ( my translation isn't exact but i hope you got the meaning ^^)

Please enjoy this new review, i thought it was better to post it today so you can find a book for this saisonal day ^^

Happy Valentine's Day to all and a big thanks you for reading what i write.

Short description from goodread :

Colt McQuade is a soldier with a secret, and Layla Freeman is the one person who can unravel it. But someone else wants the information, too, sending the couple on the run. They'll do everything they can to protect Colt's precious knowledge--and guard their hearts in the process.

Story:

Layla Freman receives an invitation to her special valentine ritual under the form of a postcard, problem the one who has written it and share this each year with her, Peter, is dead. Curious and also hopeful she goes to the restaurant. There she meets a man, Colt, who affirms to have spent the last year in company of Peter until his death under the torture. He claims to need her help to unlock a memory Peter put in his head before dying.  Shocked to learn how Peter really died and has told this man all about her and her secrets, Layla wants to leave when she is attacked. Colt saves her. To avoid these men and find the answer to the enigma of what has done Peter, they go together on the run.

My opinion:

This story has some good characters, Colt, the soldier who spent one year under the torture and Layla, a woman who has lost the only one she has ever loved. Bound together by this man Peter their common friend they start to discover each other…while trying to stay alive. We learn a lot about Peter even if he is dead before the start of this story and even with that he is my favourite character. The action is fast and the breaks are few and in a way that’s the problem… I don’t think a soldier who has suffered as much as him would let his guard down so quickly. Yes he could have started to love her from what Peter told him of her but with men armed with guns following him and trying to capture or kill him, he just take the time to make love in the woods…not realistic enough for me. He should be high on guard all the time and not act like this. The quest to find the secret is interesting and the plot explained however I don’t think the military are likely to let some of them in the hands of one enemy when they have some critical information…one year that’s very long.

So it’s a good read but it could have been better, the military aspect of the story is interesting even if it’s the one that make it less believable

Score:  3,5 /5
