Review: Bourne ( River of Time 3.1) by Lisa T. Bergren

Hi!,

Today is the International Women's Day and for this occasion i couldn't choose a better series to review.  River of Time series is full of adventure, honour, loyalty and love but the women like Gabi and Lia aren't just beautiful girls. They have a brain and they use it, they fight for what and who they love and more important they stay true to themselves. I really loved this serie and was happy to learn that some enovellas will prolonge the adventure.

End of February, Bourne was published in differents formats  so you can go buy it immediately if you want. For the ones who are just discovering these books, a small introduction:

Gabi and Lia, are two young american girls whose parents are archeologists, specialist of the Etruscan period. Since their childhood, they have spend their holidays in Italy while theirs parents were working. Even after the death of their father in an accident, their mother continues to do the same. While in Italy for a new search, their mother discovers old etruscans tomb, fed to just be able to listen  the girls decide to have a look at the second tomb. There some strange hands prints caught their attention and they magically find themselves in Medieval Italy where they will have to survive.

To say more could give you too many spoilers i think so if you want to learn a bit more you can check my reviews of these first books: Waterfall, Cascade and finally Torrent .

Really i loved them a lot ( total score 4,5)!

Now, here come Bourne! Enjoy!

Short description from goodread :

The River of Time Series--a Top 10 Pick for over 20 YA book bloggers in 2011! If you like romance, adventure and a dose of medieval Italian culture, you'll love WATERFALL (book 1), CASCADE (book 2) and TORRENT (book 3). Hint: They’re not just for teenagers.

BOURNE, a novella (1/3 the length of a normal novel), picks up right where TORRENT left off...Find out what has happened to men returning from the battle, gravely wounded, to the Betarrinis, fighting for the men they love, and just who is hunting them next...

My opinion:

I was hoping so much for this book and in the end I’m a bit disappointed. First, it’s really too short, yes it’s a novella but I think that too many things are started and not developed enough. Second I was really destabilised by the constant changing of point of view, Gabi, Lia, Gabi etc it didn’t permit me to feel immersed in the story like I did in the first 3books. Perhaps it’s because the chapters are so short that you get the feeling the changes are too quick but really I regretted that.
Lord Greco is there but he isn’t as great as before. He is feeling so guilty that he wants to die? Suicide was forbidden, frowned upon at that time! So it doesn’t make sense. Also he is starting to look at Lia now? Oki not as much as he did with Gabi but there are some signs. I can understand that Luca is on the defensive. However, even that is a bit strange, there are blood brothers or nearly and just like that they stop to trust each other? Even when one has lost everything, Not very loyal from Luca I think. Marcello is nearly dead and the day after he is riding…too quick.

In this novella, I felt more the tragedy, the drama. I didn’t finish the book with a smile like with the others. No I just wanted to cry because I’ve got the feeling it will be just worse after. I didn’t get closure. And it’s the first time with this series. I mean the last book finished on a hard battle and all but we could hope, imagine they came back safe and sound and life will be better. This one starts just where we left, the consequences of the battle and such but the end doesn’t give me dreams, hope just a foreboding presentiment…. I hope there will have another after book after this novella, really now it’s not a wish it’s necessity it can’t end like that, too sad .... it's a good book but not one that should close the page of the River of time.
Normally , there should be at least another novella this year and Lisa wrote on her blog that perhaps a third one after and if the public react well there is hope for a print version of all the novellas together!!! ( i will keep you updated^^)

To recommend to the fan of the River of time and to read in order ^^;;

Short description from goodread :

When Gabi and Lia finally learn to surf the river of time, they realize they must make hard choices about life and love in the third and final book in the River of Time series.

Gabi and Lia Betarrini have learned to control their time travel, and they return from medieval Italy to save their father from his tragic death in modern times.   But love calls across the centuries, and the girls are determined to return forever—even though they know the Black Plague is advancing across Europe, claiming the lives of one-third of the population. In the suspenseful conclusion of the River of Time series, every decision is about life … and death.

My opinion:

As always, this book starts just where we left at the end of the second book so we can dive in it so easily and in the same time not be too stressed thanks to the absence of cliffhanger. That’s something I really appreciate.

Gabi and all her family are back in Medieval Italy and we can see it’s not the first time now as they act like warriors and without hesitation in front of danger.
I appreciated Lia a lot in this book. She has matured and doesn’t think so much about herself, she has become a woman and a warrior without losing herself or her heart.

Marcello is always so charming; it’s really difficult not to fall for him. However, I was a bit surprised by his actions in this third book. He is jealous and more possessive. Yes he has missed Gaby but still I don’t understand how he can go to complete trust in Rodolpho and the next instant hate him just because he discovered that he could love the same woman as him. In the opposite, when she goes into shock and trauma he stays calm, useful yes but when your loved one act like she did I don’t think it’s really so easy to stay clam.
Also how, after all what she has affronted, can Gabi start to have some doubt even shortly? I wanted to slap her

Lord Greco, stays true to his friendship with Marcello even if it cost him a lot, politically and emotionally. The reader starts to understand him better and we can see how it’s not easy for him to act with honour in the circumstances he is in. We feel for him and I really hope he will get what he deserves for his sacrifice.
The character that I really appreciated was Thomas. He gives a lot of inspiration and while helping Gabi to find her place, he helps the readers too to see things differently. We learn his background and that seems even more real, truer, and more profound. I really loved how he spoke of life and trust.

The reader is confronted in this book to losses, doubts, violence and sacrifices but we also discover the power of trust, loyalty and the importance to believe in ourselves as much as in our loved ones. Life isn’t easy but you can’t enjoy it if you always fear the future. A true and good message.

It’s difficult to express how much I loved this book. You could stop here since at the beginning is was supposed to be a trilogy. You have all the answers you wanted and in the same time some questions you can dream of. BUT it’s not the end. Like I told you before what I appreciate in these books is that each one ends without angst for the reader and in the same time you are more than happy to discover what follows next. For those who wished knowing what happened next and how Lord Greco will life there is a new e Novella : Bourne

To recommend without hesitation to all romantic readers how love action and poetry.

Cascade ( River of Time book2) by Lisa T. Bergren

Hello again ^^,

So without waiting, here is my opinion on Cascade second book of The River of Time series by Lisa Tawn Bergren.

Enjoy!

Short description from goodread :

Mom touched my underdress—a gown made six hundred years before—and her eyes widened as she rubbed the raw silk between thumb and forefinger. She turned and touched Lia’s gown. “Where did you get these clothes?”

Gabi knows she’s left her heart in the fourteenth century and she persuades Lia to help her to return, even though they know doing so will risk their very lives. When they arrive, weeks have passed and all of Siena longs to celebrate the heroines who turned the tide in the battle against Florence—while the Florentines will go to great lengths to see them dead.

But Marcello patiently awaits, and Gabi must decide if she’s willing to leave her family behind for good in order to give her heart to him forever.

My opinion:

This second book contains more violence than the first and Gabi endure much more too. However in the mist of these tortures, treacheries, illness and deaths the reader can also find good example of sacrifice, selfless, courage and honour. Firenze is against Sienna (and thus Castello Forelli) and Gabi and her sister are capital for both camps either as a symbol of courage and force either as bait, a valuable prize if captured. Being a hero is a good thing sometimes.

We discover that not all is how it seems and that there are some loyalties deeper than other. We find again Lord Paratore and he didn’t change at all, but we discover Lord Greco, a firenze Knight childhood friend of Marcello.
The tension is high and it helps to see a new aspect of the character. Gabi isn’t only a warrior she also has a deep instinctual sense of the politic. Stronger than a average modern girl, she can be captured, hurt and it takes more to break her. I’m not sure I could do the same in similar circumstances. She proves than she is very loyal and she admits her love for Marcello.

Marcello was true to his words and waited for her he even made some preparations (so perfect). He tries to protect them from the politic world too however seeing as he isn’t a lord but only the second son his power is less than some of his enemies. Even then, he still stays by her side and helps her at the best of his abilities. We also discover than Luca is fonder of Lia that he told her and he show how good of a friend and knight he is.

What I loved less is than the way mother and daughters think about the time travel experience. For a scientist, their mother doesn’t seem cautious enough for me. In the same time, I understand their motive but it’s a bit too selfish in my opinion.

The rhythm of the story is rapid and the writing immerses the reader in a past time that as much as we are happy to be safe here and now and despite the danger we would like to discover. It's quite intense.
I didn’t want to stop reading it and when it was time to eat it was really difficult to put this book aside and at the end you just want to jump on the next one. A really good book to recommend.

Score:  4/5
