Description from goodreads :

When out of work graphic designer Verity Long accidentally traps a ghost on her property, she’s saddled with more than a supernatural sidekick—she gains the ability see spirits. It leads to an offer she can’t refuse from the town’s bad boy, the brother of her ex and the last man she should ever partner with.

Ellis Wyatt is in possession of a stunning historic property haunted by some of Sugarland Tennessee’s finest former citizens. Only some of them are growing restless—and destructive. He hires Verity put an end to the disturbances. But soon Verity learns there’s more to the mysterious estate than floating specters, secret passageways, and hidden rooms.

There’s a modern day mystery afoot, one that hinges on a decades-old murder. Verity isn't above questioning the living, or the dead. But can she discover the truth before the killer finds her?

My opinion:
Funny but so much more! I really loved  this story...Verity is such a great heroine, she is strong, determined, loyal and not a damsel in distress.... I love how she stand up for herself even if it didn't really help with her ex who is taking all he can from her ( i sure do hope he will get what he deserves later in the story...i want him to suffer....)
now we only hear about him  so far but believe me you will hate him right on the spot.

Ellis is so different from his brother but at first he just thinks as does his family, fortunately being teh black sheep he opens up quickly and he is quite open minded really...not sure everyone would react as he dopes when learning there is a ghost speaking.

So after having sold all what was inside her grandmother house that she inherited to pay her ex Beau, Verity is devasted at the idea to have to sell the house...however while cleaning an ugly vase her ex left her she inadvertently imprison her ghost Frankie as it wasn't a vase but an urn holding his ashes. Stuck together for the time being the ghost of an gangster and Verity do their best to save the house and in the process Frankie allow her to see in the spirit realms and to speak to ghosts not only seeing them. With his "gift"  Verity is thrown into an adventure trying to find old treasures but also solve murders to appease some poltergeist.

Frankie is funny and i don't think he appreciates his family a lot ( because yes he is an ancestor of the ex). He protect Verity and i liked their relationship. The other ghosts are also interesting ( i did learn a bit of history). However for me the investigation was solved a little too quickly  for me-i was suspecting someone very early and i got the vilain right- the space of the book though is perfect. Verity and Ellis relationship or in fact simply trust this far build slowly, we learn about the ghost space and about each of them all while investigating.... really well done

I will be delighted to continue this series for sure and you will probably come to love Lucy but i will let you discover who it is. This is a fantastic paranormal cozy mystery with a touch of romance and humour

Description from goodreads :

The Asscrack Gang and I are about to get busy!

Being single in a world where everything is thorn-covered roses and bags of bloody bones sucks! Heidi’s got Hunter, Bert’s got Luci…hell, even Lucifer’s got Trixie and then there’s me, the sexiest alter ego this side of Purgatory… stuck inside a Hellhound who’s happier than a zombie at the body farm in her new wedded bliss. Sure, Heidi and her Hunkie Hellhound hump like rabbits getting ready for Easter but even that’s gotten boring. I need to get out, see the Underworld, sow my wild oats. I mean, a girl’s gotta get hers while the gettin’s good, am I right?

It’s taken six long months of bitchin’… I mean persuading, but Heidi’s finally agreed to let me have a body of my own. So, it’s back into the Lady Bug Express and off to West Virginia, but this time we’re avoiding the crazy Aunties and heading straight for Asscrack. Zelda, the next Baba Yaga and Almighty Shifter Wanker has agreed to help. She plans to yank me outta Heidi and shove me into a fresh new body before the next full moon. Then it’s bingo bango, Lola’s gonna get her groove on.

It looks like I might even end up with some powers, seems Katie, the chickie whose skin will now be mine, was a witch before she hocused when she should have pocused. I might have to sidestep her sisters and hideout from some vamps but it'll all be worth it. Imagine the possibilities… me with magic. I’m positively giddy at the idea.

The plan is flawless. I mean, come on, what could go wrong?

My opinion:
If you need to laugh and only have time for a novella this one should be perfect for you. Could be better if you read Heidi first but it's not even necessarily you can be swept into Lola story without more knowledge of this universe it works perfectly as stand alone.

Since it's a novella i don't want to spoil too much as the description is already quite instructive but if it's your first Julia Mills in this series you would be surprised. Lola is a personality and she doesn't watch her tongue one bit at all...no filter, she loves fun, fashion, having love affair when she wants....no string attached. She want to be free and independent....being part of Heidi of course doesn't help at all so when offered the opportunity to have a body of her own ( or to take one that was " left off") she doesn't hesitate at all.

It's really a funny read and i particularly enjoyed the fact that steamy scenes don't happen before the end of the book because there is really a story and it make sense.

If you have the opportunity to try it don't hesitate ( and for those outside the US without access to kindle worlds you can contact the author, she is a pearl)

 Description from goodreads :

On the run and disguised as a boy, Fenix Graystone finds sanctuary when a witch opens her home, arms her with charmed knives, and transforms her into a fearsome fighter. But when an enigmatic vampire overlord arrives seeking help to solve the murders of three young women, Fenix’s newfound peace shatters.

The kidnapping of a fourth girl stirs up strange emotions in Fenix, bringing her illegal magical powers to the surface. But the magic within her points Fenix to suspects too close to the vampire overlord for comfort.

Now she must ally with an enemy she didn’t even know she had if she hopes to rescue the girl and bring the killers to justice—before she becomes their next victim.

If you like fast-paced action, strong female leads, and a dreamy love interest, you'll want to get lost in these pages.

My opinion:
A very good surprise! Somehow i wasn't expecting this story to be so good so, discovering how much i enjoyed, it was great.

The beginning isn't  the best as we jump from a place to another without really knowing who to follow but once we meet with the team and with the hero: Fenix  -passing for boy but in reality a young woman- we can't stop. The intrigue is well written with some information given  sometimes clearly sometimes more subtly  but we really get all we could wish for to understand the characters and let grow on us. Of course it's the first in a series so there are more to discover but the main plot of the book  is solved so no big cliffhanger to make us despair but just an ending making us want for more without anguish.
I loved Fenix, she is quite loyal and has deep sense of justice, she may not know what she is at first but certainly act as it and i can only it will continue to show later in the series. She suffered but still can put others first, she isn't just a damsel in distress jumping in the rm of the first male playing the knight in shining armor. She may be attracted but she still thinks and put trust before attraction so for me she was simply perfect and so courageous.
Her little gang isn't bad either i particularly love java the falcon shifter and the healing witch for whom money isn't a priority.

Micha is an intriguing vampire....though his age didn't make him less naive. He is one wanting to protect the supernaturals and playing judge and enforcer but if a special class existed to do that before  there must have been a good reason and from what we discover how important they were and how needed they still are despite what some thought at a time. Vampire master he may be but he would prefer to be human and have peace between human and supernatural world. Discovering Fenix 's secret but keeping it while being attracted and going against protocol to try to be with her he is a little too arrogant and speak without thinking...but even with his pride wounded he does keep his promise which show how loyal he can be as well.

So far we learned the name of the big bad vilain and what he did (and why) but he is still quite mysterious so the series could be very promising if the quality stay the same, the main idea magic/ psychic peacemaker/peacesmith is interesting and i would gladly follow it as Fenix, like us has still a lot to learn and allies to make.

Spies and Spells ( Spies and Spells 1) by Tonya Kappes

However that's where the magic of books appears...they are able to transport in magical universe, give us comfort and courage or simply to make us laugh...possibilies are as endless as books are numerous and diverse.

This week i've read one novelty that i particularly enjoyed and a book from an author i'm fond of. So today program is Spies and Spells from Tonya Kappes , first in the series of the same name....one thing is sure ...so far when i need to smile or laugh Tonya never disappointed me.

Happy Reading!

Short description from goodreads :

While Maggie waits for her Witchy Hour, she works at the family diner with her mom, aunt Meme and Lilith, her sister - all witches. Soon Maggie gets entangled with a mysterious handsome stranger, Mick Jasper, and his secret U.S. organization, SKUL. Has she found her calling?

My opinion:
Another series by Tonya Kappes and a cozy paranormal mystery? Of course i had to try it and i'm so happy i did!

Maggie is a witch and a  strong spirited one, acting like a child at time ( really playing with magic for a dare?!) she still can be responsible as well...when she wants to but she has a tendency to call trouble. Her familiar is Vinnie, a car. First time i read about a non animal familiar and i loved him protective, jealous he can be so funny and territorial ( who though a car could be^^).

In this universe, witches can hide in the normal world but can't reveal what they are which is understandable. However they each have a role or a job perfectly fit for them and they discover what it is when they live their Witchy Hour. No one knows when or how it happen it simply happen  differently for each witch. Maggie longs to discover her destiny, she is bored helping at the family diner how she likes it but she wants to know what she is means to be....and for someone so impatient she doesn't understand it when it hit her. One day, meeting someone she starts feeling needles everywhere and her magic becomes wonky...because Mick Jasper an investigator for a secret organization is part of her destiny...and none to happy to have met this strange girl with even stranger car that keeps getting in the way of his investigation.

But fate knows what he is doing and soon Maggie is recruited to go undercover as his partner....even if it's supposed to be temporary, even if it's more appearances than reality Maggie discover she loves doing that and will do her best to solve her case without revealing any family secret.

It was really funny, the investigation was interesting despite the fact i guessed the culprit way too soon but it didn't matter with the characters it was fun to follow false leads , watch their attraction grow and their bickering incessant as Maggie refuse to reveal how she knows what she knows and Mick wants to discover what she is and what 's wrong with her car.

If you are looking for a paranormal cosy mystery with magic this is definitively one you have to try
