Druid Vices and a Vodka ( The Guild Codex: Spellbound 6) by Annette Marie

Hello to all,

While i'm starting 2020 deeply sick i still had the pleasure to read the latest release of my top favourite series discovered in 2019...series that is supposed to get it's conclusion later this year but for now we can still enjoy it fully, and you have time to start it if you haven't yet, but i can't insist enough: you must read it in order.

Enjoy and Happy Reading!

Description from goodreads :

I've said it before, but sometimes I'm a bad person. I cheated on my twelfth grade math final, I've run countless yellow lights, and I gossip about how hot my kickass best friends are. (Good thing my job as a guild bartender doesn't require moral perfection.)

But there's bad, and then there's bad. And I'm not sure which applies to a certain dark druid/wanted criminal/reluctant friend of mine. His transgressions include black-magic dealings, kidnapping, and murder, and he's about to add "revenge-fueled killing spree" to his resume—if I don't stop him.

Should I stop him?

He and his nemesis are gearing up to tear each other apart, rogues and vultures are converging with their sights on the spoils, and the guilds that would normally stomp them into the ground are under attack. We're on the brink of an all-out criminal turf war, and my time to decide is almost up.

Who's the real bad guy ... and do I dare stand in his way?

My opinion:
What a rollercoaster! i'm really glad i could read this in one sitting because if i had to take a break i would have been in a state of anguish rarely reached because of a book.  This is fabulous, there is tension, anguish, humour, lot of action and sometimes really moving moments....i absolutely loved this new instalment and really the next one can't  be fast enough at this point.

I loved Zak since the beginning i still feel for him because we really don't have a lot  of insights about what he lived but  as much i appreciate him i could also strangle him .He can be so obtuse and stupid that 's desesperating ... he doesn't realise how much he is trusting Tori even if he gave her some strong artefacts and how protective he can be of her at time...when it's matter he gets so stubborn and single minded that's a wonder how some fae didn't' take offence. Only Aaron could be as bad as him at times, they sure share some strong points.

Tori is as wonderful and loyal as always , she is determined to protect all of her friends  even against their wishes and she can take huge risks for that.  I particularly loved how she is starting to open to Erza.

The story is fast and we get immersed immediately, there were more interactions between Tori and Robin too this time and i can't wait to get the point of view of Robin about all the new events. Darius get even more mysterious as well and i would love to learn more about his past adventures.

This series is really addictive and wonderfully written so if you haven't started it yet  this is the time to start because this need to read in order. Each character  has its own appeal and  we can only want more of all of them.

Short description from goodreads :

Three months ago, I landed a job as a bartender. But not at a bar—at a guild. Yeah, the magic kind.

I'm not a badass mage like my three smokin' hot best friends. I'm not a sorcerer or an alchemist, or even a wussy witch. I'm just a human, slinging drinks like a pro and keeping my non-magical nose out of mythic business. Seriously, I know my limits.

So why am I currently standing in a black-magic ritual circle across from a fae lord?

Somewhere behind me, my three mage friends are battling for their lives. Somewhere near my feet is the rogue witch I just knocked out with a stolen spell. And I have about five seconds to convince this very angry sea god not to shmoosh me like a bug.

I'm pretty sure this wasn't part of the job description.

--
Note: The three mages are definitely sexy, but this series isn't a reverse harem. It's 100% fun, sassy, fast-paced urban fantasy.

My opinion:
I love Hoshi ^^, realy Tori and Zak exchanges are hilarious and i really appreciated those. The investigation in this instalment is interesting, focused on mages and faes but somehow i found the guild lacking in this case. Our three mages are not at their top (and the rest of the guild is slow) so Tori really needed new allies...even if they are little and green^^

The rhythm was good, the story compelling and i loved it however this one is harder to review without spoiler so i will just let you know that it's excellent but you need to read this in order

Dark Arts and a Daiquiri ( The Guild Codex: Spellbound 2) by Annette Marie

Hello to all

i do have several soon to be released book to share with you but i decided to start with the second book in a series i've become more than fan of; i needed the humour.

Enjoy!

Publisher: Dark Owl Fantasy Inc.

Description from goodreads :

When I found myself facing down the scariest black-magic felon in the city, practically daring him to abduct me, I had to wonder exactly how I ended up here.

It all started when I accidentally landed a job as a bartender—but not at a bar. At a guild, populated by mages, sorcerers, alchemists, witches, and psychics. Good thing this lame-o human is adaptable, right?

Then my favorite guild members—three sexy, powerful, and intermittently charming mages—asked for my help. Did they want access to my encyclopedic knowledge of cocktails? Oh no. They wanted to wrap me up in a pretty ribbon and plunk me in the crosshairs of a murderous rogue to lure him out of hiding.

So that's what we did. And that's why I'm here. About to be kidnapped. Oh, and our grand plan for safely capturing said murderous rogue? Yeah, that completely fell apart about two minutes ago.

Why did I agree to this again?
--
Note: The three mages are definitely sexy, but this series isn't a reverse harem. It's 100% fun, sassy, fast-paced urban fantasy.

My opinion:
I couldn't resist jumping into this book as soon as i finished the first one since it was so  good and i'm really happy to say that the quality is as good if not better in this one! Tori has a lot to do on her own this time and it helps her to understand more what she is currently living. Yes she has a traumatic past but she is now able to fight for herself  and for those she loves.

To help a young runaway, she doesn't hesitate to put herself in danger  and it doesn't really go how she expected things to go. I loved the Ghost  in a sense he is perfect for Tori, loyal and protective but living dangerously  like Tori who can't keep her mouth shut^^;;  and she does take risks for what she believes in....which allow her to make unexpected allies as well as put her life on the line.

I loved to see different kind of fae and  some moments were really hilarious. This story is full of action and gives us more information about the universe as well which was wonderful . We focus more on Tori and the Ghost but we do see the guys and members of the guild as well .

It also promise a lot of fun in the future instalments when we think of a orb or of some escaped villains so i'm itching to start book 3 as soon as possible!

Really a great urban fantasy not to be missed

Three Mages and a Margarita ( The Guild Codex :Spellbound 1) by Annette Marie

hello to all,

Not long ago my friend Carien recommended me a series ( THANK YOU) she just had discovered but the title had me hesitating, not for long as the blurb destroyed my fears. Since i got the opportunity to try it i jumped on the opportunity and i just regret not having jumped on it before. It's fabulous, easy read full of action humour and i just want more!!!!!! ( so bad news for my wishlist)

Really i want to avoid spoiler so i won't tell you much but it's really a series to try if you haven't yet, really worth the Sullivans award it won.

Happy Reading

Description from goodreads :

Broke, almost homeless, and recently fired. Those are my official reasons for answering a wanted ad for a skeevy-looking bartender gig.

It went downhill the moment they asked me to do a trial shift instead of an interview—to see if I'd mesh with their "special" clientele. I think that part went great. Their customers were complete dickheads, and I was an asshole right back. That's the definition of fitting in, right?

I expected to get thrown out on my ass. Instead, they…offered me the job?

It turns out this place isn't a bar. It's a guild. And the three cocky guys I drenched with a margarita during my trial? Yeah, they were mages. Either I'm exactly the kind of takes-no-shit bartender this guild needs, or there's a good reason no one else wants to work here.

So what's a broke girl to do? Take the job, of course—with a pay raise.
--
Note: The three mages are definitely sexy, but this series isn't a reverse harem. It's 100% fun, sassy, fast-paced urban fantasy.

My opinion:
I couldn't have hoped for a better start for this series there is lot of action, humour and it's addictive to the point i couldn't resist doing my best to get book 2 without delay. Now i must say that with the title only i probably wouldn't have given a try because it sure gives the idea of a reverse harem but i can confirm the author 's note : it's not!

Where to start , the main character Tori is a very independent girl with trust issue but short tempered for sure and even more determination . She couldn't keep a job so far because of her temper and the fact that hitting or shouting at customer isn't well seen by managers. After a new door closed in her face she stumble on a paper with new job add and decide to give the bartender ad a try.
As strange as it seems at first and even after  talking back to the customers she does get the job....where not is as simple as it looks.

The three mages? oh i love them, not sure i could pick a favourite but we see from the start Tori relation to each one. Yes all 3 are attractive but complete different and so Tori is sometimes more like a sister to some, friend or hopeful girlfriend to others. Aaron is the most nervous one , Erza is the taciturn one but fiercely loyal, Kai is the playboy but real strategist...together they are a wonderful team but they are more like brothers than friends trusting each other with their life in a heartbeat.. I loved to read about their banter and deep bond too they can act like children one moment then big baddass warrior completely devoted the next minute It's funny.

The rest of the characters are also wonderful , so different and full of energy ready to kick back at the next second. I really would like to discover a bit more about some of them but  at the same time i'm already more than happy as it is for now.

The action is non stopping , there are twists and it's a real page turner as i read this in little more than 1h only since it was so good and i could reread it without waiting too. The story feel complete oh there are little element that could expend in the rest of the series but it's definitively no cliffhanger.

If you love funny urban fantasy this one is not to be missed.

Happy Pants Cafe (Happy Pants 0.5) by Mimi Pamfiloff

Hello to all!

With the sun outside it's hard to be stuck inside if we don't have a good book to spend the time. I did read this one last year but i reread it to make the review and this is one contemporary romance that could make me enjoy this genre

Happy reading!

Description from goodreads :

 SHHH….IT’S A SECRET!

For over forty-five years, singles have been secretly flocking to The Happy Pants Café. And what are they searching for? It’s not coffee. And it’s not pants. It’s true love, and everyone who goes, finds it!

So what, exactly, is the café’s big secret? Harper Branton, a columnist for the San Francisco Tribune, who’d sooner believe in unicorns than in true love, is about to find out. And it’s the perfect story to save her train wreck of a career.

Too bad she’s got competition. He’s sexy, he’s arrogant, and he thinks she’s crazy. ("What kind of person doesn’t believe in love?") And this coming from a man!

When these two rivals go head to head, it's more like a WWF smackdown. A shared history binds them in wonderful, terrible ways quickly turning their duel into more than just a fight for a story.

Will they tear each other apart for the win or end up as two more satisfied Happy Pants customers?

Note: Stand-alone story

My opinion:
Lovely, really it's more than i expected even from Mimi, i laughed and i cried and i spent a very good time with this book for someone not fan of contemporary romance that saying a lot.
Harper is a young woman who somehow lost faith in love, she is determined in what she is doing and wants to become a great reporter. It's while she is attempting to get an interview, important for her career, that she met a handsome man who coincidentally is a reporter for another newspaper..and things go downhill so she must find a new topic and quickly reason why she decide to investigate the Happy pant Cafe where something could be happening but fate knows its ways.

She has reason for her behaviour and i loved that and how the author made it so realistic.

i can't tell you a lot because i don't want to spoil anything but really this was a fantastic reads, the characters have a great chemistry and the secondary characters are really funny i couldn't stay unmoved and like i said i did shed a tear here and there between laughs and smiles

If you want a funny, short romantic story don't hesitate to try this one.

And since it was calm i did manage to read more than i hoped so i'm really happy to introduce you today to a new series ( for me at least) but an author i already enjoyed a lot: Angie Fox and her Ghost hunter Mysteries series. If you are lucky you can get the first book free....you will love it but first more details.

Happy reading

Description from goodreads :

When out of work graphic designer Verity Long accidentally traps a ghost on her property, she’s saddled with more than a supernatural sidekick—she gains the ability see spirits. It leads to an offer she can’t refuse from the town’s bad boy, the brother of her ex and the last man she should ever partner with.

Ellis Wyatt is in possession of a stunning historic property haunted by some of Sugarland Tennessee’s finest former citizens. Only some of them are growing restless—and destructive. He hires Verity put an end to the disturbances. But soon Verity learns there’s more to the mysterious estate than floating specters, secret passageways, and hidden rooms.

There’s a modern day mystery afoot, one that hinges on a decades-old murder. Verity isn't above questioning the living, or the dead. But can she discover the truth before the killer finds her?

My opinion:
Funny but so much more! I really loved  this story...Verity is such a great heroine, she is strong, determined, loyal and not a damsel in distress.... I love how she stand up for herself even if it didn't really help with her ex who is taking all he can from her ( i sure do hope he will get what he deserves later in the story...i want him to suffer....)
now we only hear about him  so far but believe me you will hate him right on the spot.

Ellis is so different from his brother but at first he just thinks as does his family, fortunately being teh black sheep he opens up quickly and he is quite open minded really...not sure everyone would react as he dopes when learning there is a ghost speaking.

So after having sold all what was inside her grandmother house that she inherited to pay her ex Beau, Verity is devasted at the idea to have to sell the house...however while cleaning an ugly vase her ex left her she inadvertently imprison her ghost Frankie as it wasn't a vase but an urn holding his ashes. Stuck together for the time being the ghost of an gangster and Verity do their best to save the house and in the process Frankie allow her to see in the spirit realms and to speak to ghosts not only seeing them. With his "gift"  Verity is thrown into an adventure trying to find old treasures but also solve murders to appease some poltergeist.

Frankie is funny and i don't think he appreciates his family a lot ( because yes he is an ancestor of the ex). He protect Verity and i liked their relationship. The other ghosts are also interesting ( i did learn a bit of history). However for me the investigation was solved a little too quickly  for me-i was suspecting someone very early and i got the vilain right- the space of the book though is perfect. Verity and Ellis relationship or in fact simply trust this far build slowly, we learn about the ghost space and about each of them all while investigating.... really well done

I will be delighted to continue this series for sure and you will probably come to love Lucy but i will let you discover who it is. This is a fantastic paranormal cozy mystery with a touch of romance and humour

Score:  4,5/5

Spies and Spells ( Spies and Spells 1) by Tonya Kappes

Hello to all,

This week has been filled with administrative appointments and that helped my virus to get stronger because of the stress i was under and sadly....it's not finished yet. However that's where the magic of books appears...they are able to transport in magical universe, give us comfort and courage or simply to make us laugh...possibilies are as endless as books are numerous and diverse.

This week i've read one novelty that i particularly enjoyed and a book from an author i'm fond of. So today program is Spies and Spells from Tonya Kappes , first in the series of the same name....one thing is sure ...so far when i need to smile or laugh Tonya never disappointed me.

Happy Reading!

Short description from goodreads :

While Maggie waits for her Witchy Hour, she works at the family diner with her mom, aunt Meme and Lilith, her sister - all witches. Soon Maggie gets entangled with a mysterious handsome stranger, Mick Jasper, and his secret U.S. organization, SKUL. Has she found her calling?

My opinion:
Another series by Tonya Kappes and a cozy paranormal mystery? Of course i had to try it and i'm so happy i did!

Maggie is a witch and a  strong spirited one, acting like a child at time ( really playing with magic for a dare?!) she still can be responsible as well...when she wants to but she has a tendency to call trouble. Her familiar is Vinnie, a car. First time i read about a non animal familiar and i loved him protective, jealous he can be so funny and territorial ( who though a car could be^^).

In this universe, witches can hide in the normal world but can't reveal what they are which is understandable. However they each have a role or a job perfectly fit for them and they discover what it is when they live their Witchy Hour. No one knows when or how it happen it simply happen  differently for each witch. Maggie longs to discover her destiny, she is bored helping at the family diner how she likes it but she wants to know what she is means to be....and for someone so impatient she doesn't understand it when it hit her. One day, meeting someone she starts feeling needles everywhere and her magic becomes wonky...because Mick Jasper an investigator for a secret organization is part of her destiny...and none to happy to have met this strange girl with even stranger car that keeps getting in the way of his investigation.

But fate knows what he is doing and soon Maggie is recruited to go undercover as his partner....even if it's supposed to be temporary, even if it's more appearances than reality Maggie discover she loves doing that and will do her best to solve her case without revealing any family secret.

It was really funny, the investigation was interesting despite the fact i guessed the culprit way too soon but it didn't matter with the characters it was fun to follow false leads , watch their attraction grow and their bickering incessant as Maggie refuse to reveal how she knows what she knows and Mick wants to discover what she is and what 's wrong with her car.

If you are looking for a paranormal cosy mystery with magic this is definitively one you have to try

Alien Diplomacy (Katherine "kitty" Katt 5) by Gini Koch

Hello to all,

While waiting for my results and thus for a solution to my medical troubles, i decided to read some authors i discovered last year and came to really love. One of those is Gini Koch, each of her book made me laugh, or at least smile, so far so i needed to continue the series and it was also perfect for the challenge of this month : " romance including aliens". I wasn't disappointed at all and i'm glad to have the next book ready when i need a little humour boost.

So here is my opinion on book 5 in the Katherine " Kitty Katt series called " Alien Diplomacy", not my favourite cover but the story is a good as before and book 7 has been released a few days ago so if you haven't started the series yet, you are really missing something.

 Happy Reading

Short description from goodreads :

Being newlyweds and new parents is challenging enough. But Jeff and Kitty Martini are also giving up their roles as super-being exterminators and Commanders in Centaurion Division while mastering the political landscape as the new heads of Centaurion's Diplomatic Corps. Enter a shadowy assassination plot and a new set of anti-alien conspirators, and nothing will ever be the same..

My opinion:
Gini Koch really knows how to catch my interest and not letting go. Alien Diplomacy was funny, inventive and it’s probably only because I’m starting to know her mind that I could guess several parts but not the main one so even with high suspicions I couldn’t stop reading… in fact reading this one just made me want to reread all the first one and it saying a lot since I don’t reread to closely because I remember too well but in this case even a reread doesn’t loose it’s savour.

Kitty has lost her sparks and singular mind  which is causing her some distress now that she must act with diplomacy and can’t rush in the action… or can’t she^^;; try to reign your nature and it comes back in gallop and we love our Kitty as she is after all^.^. I was glad to see that she wasn’t the only one having problem to adjust quite the opposite and that even if they picked the ones to be put at their ex posts. It takes some time to understand than you can make a difference at any place you are as long as you do your best.

To find Kyle and Len once again was too great, I really enjoyed those. As often, our team will have its hands full between threats, assassinations attempts and sadly political meetings ^^. It will be up to kitty to do what she does best: finding unlikely allies and enter the minds of the bad guys to guess who is who….even if Washington DC make that even more difficult. Thankfully she is not alone and Jeff and the poofs ( I really want one) as well as the whole team is backing her up like always.

This is really one of my favourite series and I’m so glad I won’t need to wait too long before reading next one^^. If you want a fun reads, with action and romance but really a lot of humour despite the tension try this series but in order because you really can’t miss anything it’s too good!

Demon Hunting in Dixie (Demon Hunting1) by Lexi George

Hello to all,

I wanted to give you this earlier but i've got a serious cold that made me get behind my schedule so before i go back to rest and fighting this nasty cold i want to share this with you.

To tell you the truth i thought about reviewing another book first but something happened... for those who know me they know i'm very and i mean very sensitive and emotionnal ( even worse when i'm sick) so when one of the little bird coming to eat at home didn't make it ( be it the cold, illness, heartattack  etc we will never know) i was devastated.. really i cried all morning , i didn't want to eat = total disaster. However, i had to read and since the main topic for this month will demons,  i though hey it can't be worse, demons means dark and i'm in a dark mood so i took a book, one that i really really couldn't wait any longer to start and.... i laughed... oh not just a little but really laughed during all the book. This book was simply perfect and it took my mind miles away from any negative waves.

It's the reason i decided to share this one with you first because you perhaps need this little light too to make you smile while reading a really good story because it's so rare to get demon in a book and Humour mixed with romance.

So here comes Demon hunting in Dixie, first book of the demon hunting series, by Lexi George!

Happy reading and have fun!

Short description from goodreads :

A warrior, a demon, and the girl next door. . .

Looking For Trouble

Addy Corwin is a florist with an attitude. A bad attitude, or so her mama says, 'cause she's not looking for a man. Mama's wrong. Addy has looked. There's just not much to choose from in Hannah, her small Alabama hometown. Until Brand Dalvahni shows up, a supernaturally sexy, breathtakingly well-built hunk of a warrior from—well, not from around here, that's for sure. Mama thinks he might be European or maybe even a Yankee. Brand says he's from another dimension.

Addy couldn't care less where he's from. He's gorgeous. Serious muscles. Disturbing green eyes. Brand really gets her going. Too bad he's a whack job. Says he's come to rescue her from a demon. Puh-lease. But right after Brand shows up, strange things start to happen. Dogs talk and reanimated corpses stalk the quiet streets of Hannah. Her mortal enemy Meredith, otherwise known as the Death Starr, breaks out in a severe and inexplicable case of butt boils. Addy might not know what's going on, but she definitely wants a certain sexy demon hunter by her side when it all goes down. . .

My opinion:
Fabulous! I didn’t laugh as much in a long time and never with a book about demons. Generally when you pick a book with demon it’s at least a little dark or filled with tension at least, yes there are demons with honour and a set of rules, not all “demons” are evil etc  but until now I’ve never encountered a book with them included  that made me laugh for more than 90% of the story , the 10% left were for the action, tension part and the romance when humour was low or no present but in a whole this book made me smile when i thought it impossible and when i started i couldn’t stop! Lexi George really managed to create a wonderful universe filled with action, romance and humour where everything has its place.

In this universe, demons called “djegrali” as well as those who hunt them come from an alternate universe, they can jump in time and between worlds without difficulty. The hunters or “Dalvahni” are tripped of all emotions, their sole goal is to hunt the demons to imprison or destroy them. They have a huge (and i mean HUGE) appetite, some special powers like immortality, invisibility etc and to better accomplish their mission they do have some advantage like an understanding of all languages, special purse that deliver money of any kind at will and they can alter memories. One other good point is: they are terribly gorgeous.

Brand is one of those famous warriors and while pursuing some Djegralis in our world, in Alabama, he is put at a disadvantage in a combat when he is confronting several enemies. Addy, short for Adara, was walking her dog Dooley when her instinct told her something was wrong, trying to get back her dog after she flew she is confronted to a creature of nightmare until in a blinding light appears a man with a sword who start to fight… seeing others creatures she call out to him, helping as she can but the consequences are dire since she is hurt in the process.

Confronted to a choice, Brand decides to save his new ally however it’s something forbidden or at least no recommended since his has an impact on the human. Now, Addy can hear and understand her dog and when she gets angry strange things happens…. which start to happen a little to often as Brand and his fellow warrior Ansgard, who has the worst timing ever, are around.

Lexi George use the fact they are coming from another universe to play with the languages because if they understand it… it’s only the basics one and not all the idioms, sayings typical from the south and that gives some interesting and so funny scene. Add to that fact that Brand is chivalrous, polite, possessive alpha with a tendency to tell the truth to easily without prior knowledge of the privacy or the taboo of some topics and you get hilarious scenes. He is making Addy as furious as possible all while getting completely out of control suddenly overwhelmed by unknown feelings.
The action is there, like I said Ansgard has a terrible timing that made me sorry for Addy and Brand, even more when he has such an icy attitude at first.

We get the romance between Adara and Brand but despite all his rhetoric and rules the icy warrior isn’t immune to human charm either since he got easily transfixed by Evie, Evangeline, the best friend of Addy who has the particularity to see faeries. Because, as Addy will learn, her little town isn’t as boring and simple as it seems. Lot of demons and demons descendants are living there as well as humans with some magical power. The name of the town also means something for the Dalvahni even if we are still a little unsure of what at the moment.

Really this is a wonderful read if you need to relax a little, to smile but want action and romance this is the book for you. I can’t wait to have the other books in the series (without forgetting the novellas, it’s really to good to miss). I really recommend you to try it
