Three Mages and a Margarita ( The Guild Codex :Spellbound 1) by Annette Marie

hello to all,

Not long ago my friend Carien recommended me a series ( THANK YOU) she just had discovered but the title had me hesitating, not for long as the blurb destroyed my fears. Since i got the opportunity to try it i jumped on the opportunity and i just regret not having jumped on it before. It's fabulous, easy read full of action humour and i just want more!!!!!! ( so bad news for my wishlist)

Really i want to avoid spoiler so i won't tell you much but it's really a series to try if you haven't yet, really worth the Sullivans award it won.

Happy Reading

Description from goodreads :

Broke, almost homeless, and recently fired. Those are my official reasons for answering a wanted ad for a skeevy-looking bartender gig.

It went downhill the moment they asked me to do a trial shift instead of an interview—to see if I'd mesh with their "special" clientele. I think that part went great. Their customers were complete dickheads, and I was an asshole right back. That's the definition of fitting in, right?

I expected to get thrown out on my ass. Instead, they…offered me the job?

It turns out this place isn't a bar. It's a guild. And the three cocky guys I drenched with a margarita during my trial? Yeah, they were mages. Either I'm exactly the kind of takes-no-shit bartender this guild needs, or there's a good reason no one else wants to work here.

So what's a broke girl to do? Take the job, of course—with a pay raise.
--
Note: The three mages are definitely sexy, but this series isn't a reverse harem. It's 100% fun, sassy, fast-paced urban fantasy.

My opinion:
I couldn't have hoped for a better start for this series there is lot of action, humour and it's addictive to the point i couldn't resist doing my best to get book 2 without delay. Now i must say that with the title only i probably wouldn't have given a try because it sure gives the idea of a reverse harem but i can confirm the author 's note : it's not!

Where to start , the main character Tori is a very independent girl with trust issue but short tempered for sure and even more determination . She couldn't keep a job so far because of her temper and the fact that hitting or shouting at customer isn't well seen by managers. After a new door closed in her face she stumble on a paper with new job add and decide to give the bartender ad a try.
As strange as it seems at first and even after  talking back to the customers she does get the job....where not is as simple as it looks.

The three mages? oh i love them, not sure i could pick a favourite but we see from the start Tori relation to each one. Yes all 3 are attractive but complete different and so Tori is sometimes more like a sister to some, friend or hopeful girlfriend to others. Aaron is the most nervous one , Erza is the taciturn one but fiercely loyal, Kai is the playboy but real strategist...together they are a wonderful team but they are more like brothers than friends trusting each other with their life in a heartbeat.. I loved to read about their banter and deep bond too they can act like children one moment then big baddass warrior completely devoted the next minute It's funny.

The rest of the characters are also wonderful , so different and full of energy ready to kick back at the next second. I really would like to discover a bit more about some of them but  at the same time i'm already more than happy as it is for now.

The action is non stopping , there are twists and it's a real page turner as i read this in little more than 1h only since it was so good and i could reread it without waiting too. The story feel complete oh there are little element that could expend in the rest of the series but it's definitively no cliffhanger.

If you love funny urban fantasy this one is not to be missed.

The Crowns of Croswald by D.E. Night

Hello to all!!!

Last week i was lucky to receive a magical box sent by the author D. E. Night which included an arc of her new release " The Crowns of Croswald"...to be exact it was really a well thought and magical created box that could only catch my interest and makes me want to discover more.
Since i'm really bad at taking pictures i will redirect you later to a friend's blog who also received it and is a lot more talented than me in that domain.

Now as i told you inside was a book and i'm more than happy to share my opinion with you as it's really a good surprise. ( yes sometimes the outside is as good as the inside^^)

So Happy Reading!

Description from goodreads :

In Croswald, the only thing more powerful than dark magic is one secret...

For sixteen years Ivy Lovely has been hidden behind an enchanted boundary that separates the mundane from the magical. When Ivy crosses the border, her powers awaken. Curiosity leads her crashing through a series of adventures at the Halls of Ivy, a school where students learn to master their magical blood and the power of Croswald’s mysterious gems. When Ivy’s magic—and her life—is threatened by the Dark Queen, she scrambles to unearth her history and save Croswald before the truth is swept away forever.

My opinion:
A magical, mysterious universe that, at some points, can remind us of Harry Potter for its enchantments. That's the first thing that came to me when i was reading it's not the same and in this book so far the majority of the main characters and big secondary one are females. But we also have someone discovering the Magic that she knew existed though, an head of school we are not 100% trusting and  ghosts in the school as well as magical portrait..... if you have read Harry Potter those are elements that ring a bell.

That being said it was really a pleasure to discover this universe along Ivy and there is a lot we sill have to learn i'm sure. Ivy is a loving character, she is determined, loyal, has a good heart and is quite courageous. She does what she feels is right and that can lead her to dangerous situation but she is also apt to make good friends in unlikely place. For example, she saved a dragon.... i must said that "dragon oven" had me smiling but Humboldt is really funny and i'm sure he will have a role to play later and a dragon as a pet is always fun. She is also friend with a dwarf and from what i gathered in that universe it's really uncommon as they have a bad reputation.. At school she has friends, allies and enemies ( really i can't stand Damaris) because the school has two sections: for the noble  who get their magic from their crown, and  another : the scrivenist  who learn magic that is inside them. They are taught together but of course some think themselves superior when they are in fact complementary.

Ivy always had dreams about a castle and someone there that she feel is calling to her....Determined to free him when she learns he  is someone forgotten by magic , a curse that doesn't affect her, she is jumping from an adventure to another all while trying to fit in and learn which isn't that easy.

I don't want to reveal too much as there are some twists and some secrets we only got partial answers to but it's definitively a great story. I would appeal to younger ones as well as older ones that long for more magical universe well written. It has action, just a touch of romance, intrigue, mystery and humour. If you loved Harry Potter and want more it will be a good discovery if you haven't read it you will discover a fantastic universe to be introduced to. I recommend it with lot of pleasure and can't wait for the next instalment hoping the quality will continue to be that good.( A glossary would be very helpful in the future.)

A Murder of Mages ( The Maradaine Constabulary 1) by Marshall Ryan Maresca

Hello to all,

It's tuesday so review day ( when i actually manage it), like i told you i'm trying to alternate my reading between sequels and new discoveries so this week it's a book that i've been eyeing since it was released and that i was very lucky to receive as a gift ( thanks again!).

It's the fist in a new series but actually it's also a kind of spin off from the first series of the author which i haven't started yet but soon perhaps.

Happy Reading!

Description from goodreads :

A Murder of Mages marks the debut of Marshall Ryan Maresca’s novels of The Maradaine Constabulary, his second series set amid the bustling streets and crime-ridden districts of the exotic city called Maradaine. A Murder of Mages introduces us to this spellbinding port city as seen through the eyes of the people who strive to maintain law and order, the hardworking men and women of the Maradaine Constabulary.

Satrine Rainey—former street rat, ex-spy, mother of two, and wife to a Constabulary Inspector who lies on the edge of death, injured in the line of duty—has been forced to fake her way into the post of Constabulary Inspector to support her family.

Minox Welling is a brilliant, unorthodox Inspector and an Uncircled mage—almost a crime in itself. Nicknamed “the jinx” because of the misfortunes that seem to befall anyone around him, Minox has been partnered with Satrine because no one else will work with either of them.

Their first case together—the ritual murder of a Circled mage— sends Satrine back to the streets she grew up on and brings Minox face-to-face with mage politics he’s desperate to avoid. As the body count rises, Satrine and Minox must race to catch the killer before their own secrets are exposed and they, too, become targets.

My opinion:
A very interesting and original story that I loved discovering.  The only downside and I prefer to start by that today is that  i was a bit confused by the world, universe in itself. Oh we get maps of Maradaine, and some infos but  not enough for me to  be immersed in the story completely without interruption or confusion at times.
Now perhaps it's a little bit my fault as well, you see this is a kind of spin off from the other series the autor has in the same universe, so perhaps  Marshall Maresca did take more time in that series to explain the universe and then it would have been a wonderful background info to jump in this new series without worry.

That being said, if you haven't read the other series like me you still can start with this one especially if you love investigation, thrillers  because the suspense is really well  done and kept until the end. I loved this magical world and the characters are quite moving.
Satrine is confronted to a very hard situation which resonated with me still she doesn't give up and is determined to get the better for her children and family. I loved her mind and how loyal she is. How she grew up certainly help her but even that no everyone could have survived as she did so she is really admirable. Minox is a mage but one that never got any education in that domain , he is uncircled ( not affiliated to any mages congregations called circles)....that in itself is already quite rare and other mages reject him for that. Worse , Minox choose to be a constable which for mages is completely unheard of and it creates even more bad reaction. Still aside from being a mage Minox is an exceptional investigator,  put aside by a lot of his colleagues and made fun of yes but still determined to resolve all his case an not with quick easy answers, he wants the truth.

The story in itself was very intense and captivating, I enjoyed it a lot. To make it even better  the main point has a resolution, we get the culprit which means no cliffhanger. At the same time we do get indices showing us that more is behind the case and while it will be another story  it was written in such a way that  we are not left hanging simply wanting for more but able to wait.....the little touch of hope was also  wonderful.

This is definitively a series i want to follow up and in the meantime I hope to discover his main series so that I can see if it will fill the blank or not ^^.

Chimes At Midnight ( october Daye 7) by Seanan McGuire

hello to all,

It's well time that i post my review for this week but depites my best effort so far  i'm not really managing my time easily . It's one of my resolutions for 2016 so too early to give up as well^^

Still today, in the deep of the night, i'm sharing with you my opinion of an instalment in one of my favourites series since i've decided to read a little more in the sequels part of my TBR pile.

Happy reading!

Short description from goodreads :

Things are starting to look up for October "Toby" Daye. She's training her squire, doing her job, and has finally allowed herself to grow closer to the local King of Cats. It seems like her life may finally be settling down...at least until dead changelings start appearing in the alleys of San Francisco, killed by an overdose of goblin fruit.

Toby's efforts to take the problem to the Queen of the Mists are met with harsh reprisals, leaving her under sentence of exile from her home and everyone she loves. Now Toby must find a way to reverse the Queens decree, get the goblin fruit off the streets--and, oh, yes, save her own life, since more than a few of her problems have once again followed her home. And then there's the question of the Queen herself, who seems increasingly unlikely to have a valid claim to the throne....

To find the answers, October and her friends will have to travel from the legendary Library of Stars into the hidden depths of the Kingdom of the Mists--and they'll have to do it fast, because time is running out. In faerie, some fates are worse than death.

October Daye is about to find out what they are.

My opinion:
If you are looking for a urban fantasy series about Fae, this is the one i would recommend without a doubt. Chimes at Midnight is book 7 and  Seanan Mcguire still captes my attention from the first page to the last one  it’s full of action with a big dosis of humour and so, so many fae species.
I love to learn about new ones in each book  - i’m fond of Cu sidhe now ; )  - and how they interact with each others even if i hate most of the nobles politics at the same time...fae can be so cruel

I’m really fond of Toby as she did mature a lot from book 1 ( getting trickier at the same time but with a Cait sidhe at her side that’s quite normal i guess^^). She is so fiercely loyal and wanting things to be fair.....but also getting in the worse situations possible...
Tybalt is here and so protective as well as Danny ( he alone would make you change your mind on trolls forever), we do get to see a lot of the Luiadeg as well which is always a moment a savor.

This time, wanting to protect Changeling, and Faerie in general, from a deadly drug, Toby manages to get exiled by the Queen (such a b*****)....since it would mean also big consequences for her friends she is determined to change the situation even if it means going against the monarch... and at the same time she is discovering how numerous her allies are and how glad she is for them.

I don’t want to reveal too much as the mysteries slowly revealed are part of what makes these books so captivating but  i can tell you that once again i’m anxious for the next book as well as fearing it . You see Toby tend to do a lot of things that can have consequences in the long run and once again she jumped head first in a binding that could be so, so disastrous that i really want to discover what will be asked  while a little afraid of what will happen... that’s the magic of this author... in each book you get answers ( big one this time^^) and at teh same time more questions nearly driving you insane ^^

So definitively  great instalment and soon  i will read the next book ( or see if a short story doresn’t take place between this book and the next as i don’t want to miss anything)

The Raven Boys ( The Raven Cycle 1) by Maggie Stiefvater

Hello to all,

Now that the day is a little less hot i can stay on the computer long enough to post you this. I have decided to participate in a discussion for the TBR2015 reading challenge and once i start it's hard for me to stop in the middle of a book so i decided to finish it and to give you my opinion on it without delay.

It's not a recent title either so i guess most of you have read it already but once again i'm behind as i wanted at first wait to get the other books before starting^^ ( not that i did get them^^;;) so today here is my opinion on The Raven Boys!

 happy reading!!

Short description from goodreads :

Every year, Blue Sargent stands next to her clairvoyant mother as the soon-to-be dead walk past. Blue never sees them--until this year, when a boy emerges from the dark and speaks to her.

His name is Gansey, a rich student at Aglionby, the local private school. Blue has a policy of staying away from Aglionby boys. Known as Raven Boys, they can only mean trouble.

But Blue is drawn to Gansey, in a way she can't entirely explain. He is on a quest that has encompassed three other Raven Boys: Adam, the scholarship student who resents the privilege around him; Ronan, the fierce soul whose emotions range from anger to despair; and Noah, the taciturn watcher who notices many things but says very little.

For as long as she can remember, Blue has been warned that she will cause her true love to die. She doesn't believe in true love, and never thought this would be a problem. But as her life becomes caught up in the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys, she's not so sure anymore.

My opinion:
I have been wanting to try this series for a moment but at first i wanted to wait until it’s complete to avoid cliffhanger...not a bad idea but i couldn’t resist.
The writing is really fluid and engaging, the author makes you want to follow Blue and the boys and to discover all the secrets, the pace is just perfect as well, the world building is good and the characters, you have little bit of each personnality with the boys so you have to picka favourite.

Really it was good but, because there is a but, it still didn’t pull completely in.... i don’t know why exactly it’s hard to pintpoint but while i liked how the characters were built and researched it lacked something... i did like Blue and i’m glad we get a littel explanation about her powers but it came a little too late for....still she is a detremined and sensible girl. That put aside it felt strange to see her being attracted to Adam when she think Gansey is her soulmate, true love... i mean she does get the name of her future ( but forbidden ) lover and she flirt with another?!
Now i admit it’s hard to resist Adam because he is more in touch with the reality, he is loyal and his history is sad so you want to take his side. I did like a lot  and i understood his reasonning  but i don’t agree with all his choice.
Gansey.... he is a little harder to love, he isn’t bad he is a passionated guy really but his social skills are more than lacking, he doesn’t get how hios words can hurt other and how showing money at each occasion isn’t helping.
However he is loyal to his friend, he is determined to help Ronan and try his hardest to help Adam but hell is paved with good intentions and often he is making things worse. One thing i was disappointed in is the way he got jealous of Adam... it makes no sense at first at all safe if he is overly protective , possessive and doesn’t want to share friends

Then come the secondary boys and somehow  i feel more for them the sweet Noah, it’s clear what/who he is and it makes him one we want to help and protect. Ronan, that’s the still more mysterious one of the group ; he has big behaviour problems but  inside he is loyal and protective, teh way he helps Adam and how he care for the little birds that’s cute but he still has secrets and i want to learn more about him

I guess that i was quite bothered with the ending.... it was partly predictable but i’m not satisfied by this temporary conclusion...some characters change too drastically and others acts without taking all into account when they should be the more responsible ones....

I do want to follow up the series even if the love triangle bothers me a little ( still no sense for me) as it’s well written and i hope the author will answer the questions left and make sense of the rest.

Score:  3,5/5

Hello to all!!!

Book Description:

A HEAVY CROWN

Three daughters were born to High King Uorsin, in place of the son he wanted. The youngest, lovely and sweet. The middle, pretty and subtle, with an air of magic. And the eldest, the Heir. A girl grudgingly honed to leadership, not beauty, to bear the sword and honor of the king.

Ursula’s loyalty is as ingrained as her straight warrior’s spine. She protects the peace of the Twelve Kingdoms with sweat and blood, her sisters from threats far and near. And she protects her father to prove her worth. But she never imagined her loyalty would become an open question on palace grounds. That her father would receive her with a foreign witch at one side and a hireling captain at the other—that soldiers would look on her as a woman, not as a warrior. She also never expected to decide the destiny of her sisters, of her people, of the Twelve Kingdoms and the Thirteenth. Not with her father still on the throne and war in the air. But the choice is before her. And the Heir must lead…

Quite tempting, no? If you want here is a little excerpt to give you a better idea of the author's writing^^

Excerpt
Two of the mercenaries marked off a circle with twine, roughly twice a man’s height in diameter, while Captain Harlan and another man began stripping off their shirts and pants. To keep from watching, I pulled up a bench and set to polishing my sword. Not that I hadn’t seen plenty of men unclothed—field outposts and battle left little room or reason for modesty—but Harlan’s muscled physique seemed unduly attention-grabbing.
His all-over golden tan hinted that he often went unclothed outdoors, and his fair hair barely showed, leaving the rippling cuts of his muscle plainly defined. He seemed more lithe, more like a male animal, without the hardened leather armor he typically wore. Fortunately he and the other man retained strips of cloth over their groins, though their buttocks were bared.

Unfortunately, they commenced applying some sort of oil, the morning light catching it and making Harlan’s golden skin gleam over taut muscles. I resheathed my sword when I came close to slicing off a finger, Danu take him.
“Now, that,” Jepp said, coming to straddle the bench next to me, “is a fine way to start the day.”
“I thought you were teaching those mercs the Midnight form.”
“This is much more interesting. Everybody is coming to watch.”

Indeed, the other female Hawks had drawn quite close, expressions avid with more than casual interest. Marskal circulated, taking more bets, no doubt, but everyone else watched Harlan and his man. At the far end of the practice yard, Madeline and some of the maids and kitchen ladies gathered, their giggles carrying on the air like birdsong. The castle ladies would likely be sorry that they were not early risers and had missed the spectacle.

“Nice of you to grab us a ringside seat,” Jepp continued, sounding entirely too casual, “but then, this is staged for your benefit, isn’t it?”

I was sorry I’d put my sword away, as I had nothing to do with my hands now and seemed to be unable to look away from the glistening display of Harlan’s masculine form. “Yes. Marskal knows I’m keen to learn more about how these Dasnarians train and fight.”

“Oh, Captain, we are all keen to see more,” she drawled.
“No consorting,” I snapped, without thinking it through. Always a bad sign.
Jepp gave me an astonished—and terribly disappointed—look. “You can’t mean it.”
She leaned in on the pretext of drawing her knives to polish and dropped her voice. “If we’re to get out, it will be through them. I’m working on making some special friends.”

“Duly noted. But you needn’t do anything you don’t wish to.”

“Not exactly a sacrifice.” She boldly eyed the near-naked men. “I don’t mind fucking one or two. Or five. Possibly all at once.” The two men in the ring circled each other, thighs flexing in their half crouches, backs rippling, as they flexed muscles in display. “Do you think they all look that good under their clothes? I need to know. Call it scouting. Postcoital glow is excellent for extracting information from a man. Danu, I love my job.”

“You worry me, Jepp.”
“I won’t touch the captain, but say I can try a few of the others. Please?”
“Danu. Fine. Have any of them—even the captain. I don’t care. Just watch your own glow and what gets extracted from you.”
She tore her gaze away to cast me a quick, delighted grin. “You’re flustered. I’ve never seen you flustered.”
“Shut up, Jepp.”

The men connected, grappling, their hands sliding off the oiled skin of the other before catching to hold. They strained to master the strength of the other, their muscles hardened and impossibly bulging.

“I missed my workout is all,” I added. “All this waiting and wondering. It’s making me restless.”

Harlan flipped the other man and they went down in a tangle of limbs, the oil gleaming bright. The other man slipped partly free and Harlan laughed, exultant, scrambling to lock him into another hold.
“Uh-huh,” Jepp breathed. “I feel exceptionally restless this morning also.”

The maids and kitchen ladies had made bold to press through the ring of onlookers now—else they wouldn’t have been able to see through the crowd—and cheered wildly, cheeks pink and eyes bright. No one blocked our view, however, much as I wished they might.

“We’ll have a crop of Dasnarian-made babies in nine months,” I predicted. “And likely no Dasnarian fathers about to help feed the lot.”

“Mmm,” Jepp hummed, not listening to a word I said, fascinated gaze locked on the men as they tumbled over each other. Harlan had the other man pinned, facedown, locked so that he could barely struggle. Another mercenary counted in what must be Dasnarian, slapping the ground on a shout.

Thankfully that ended the match, the mercs, Hawks, and overexcited ladies cheering alike. Even Jepp leapt up from the bench, squealing in most un-warrior-like fashion. Harlan and the other man rose to their feet, now swarmed by the onlookers with much congratulating and slapping of backs.

“Not bad for a little rabbit!” The loser clapped the mercenary captain on the shoulder, shaking his head as he did.

Jepp turned on me with a stern, expectant expression. “You can count on me, Captain. I swear to extract as much as womanly possible”—she couldn’t suppress her grin at the thought—“and hands off Captain Harlan. Fair?”

“I told you, I don’t care if—”

“I’ll report!” She gave me a distracted salute and sauntered over to the man Harlan had defeated, a saucy sway to her trim hips. Harlan used her arrival to deftly extract himself from the cluster. For a big man, he moved with slick precision, and came toward me.
I stood to go, but he stepped into my path.
“Not bad for a rabbit?” I echoed his man, raising my eyebrows.
Abashed by nothing, he grinned. “‘Harlan’ means ‘rabbit’ in Dasnarian.”

“Not very auspicious.”

“I don’t know about that. What did you think?”

“An interesting sport,” I commented, keeping my eyes on his, pretending that he wasn’t standing nearly naked in front of me, glistening with oil and sweat. “As you noted, not terribly useful on the battlefield.”

“Did you like what you saw, though?” he pressed.
“Not enough to be further interested.”

He smiled easily. “You’re not tempted—not even a little?”
“Tempted?” I had gone for arch, not breathless, Danu take it.
“I think you are. We could trade lessons. You’d enjoy it.”

“You’re mistaken.” I deliberately looked at the sun, pretending to gauge the time. “I have no interest in learning a new sport; nor do I have free time to squander on pointless activities.”

“Never pointless, if done well.”

Over his shoulder, Jepp had her hands splayed on the other man’s pecs, as if measuring, gazing up at him with a bright, teasing smile. Madeline had corralled the maids into heading back to their duties, but more than one gazed back longingly. We’d be in for a bumper crop of babies, indeed.

Harlan turned, following the direction of my gaze. “Shall I order the men to keep hands off? They are accustomed to exercising that discipline.”

“As are you?” I riposted, seizing the opening and regretting it instantly.

“As well you know, Your Highness,” he returned in that smooth, deep voice, a caress in it that reminded me of the feel of his hands. “I would never press an undesired advance. Nor would my men. But yon ladies look most willing. The men will resist any and all invitations, however, if I instruct them so.”

“No need,” I sighed, thinking of Jepp’s ulterior motives and enviable enthusiasm. “I’d have every woman in Ordnung out for my blood. But make sure they behave themselves—and that they pay up for any babies they start.”That should have been in his almighty contract. Docked pay for each child left for us to raise.

“There won’t be any.”

“You’re so sure?” In my skepticism, I made the mistake of looking at him, his blond hair dark with the oil, the thick neck and corded shoulders. For some strange reason, my fingers itched to do as Jepp was even still—run my hands over the shape of those muscles, to feel that strength for myself, to discover if his skin was as smooth as it looked. I shouldn’t want that. Had never felt that desire.

He knew it, too, Danu take him, eyes glittering with answering invitation. This is staged for your benefit, isn’t it? “We have methods for preventing unplanned babies. Our women are always safe with us. No Dasnarian man would have so little care for his lover as to expose her to that danger. I should have made that clear last night. It didn’t occur to me that it was one of your concerns.”

“I have many concerns—none of them to do with you. Believe me, Captain, I haven’t given you or your… offer the least bit of thought.”

“Liar.” He leaned in close to murmur the word, so I scented his skin. Man, sweat, and sunlight. “How did you sleep? I tossed and turned myself. I kept thinking of you and the way you taste. Imagining how your hands on me would feel.”

Calling it a strategic retreat, I stepped back, removing myself from the temptation to touch him, to run my fingertips over his oiled muscles. “How unfortunate for you,” I replied. “I had far more important things to think about and still do. Excuse me, Captain.”

Satisfied at having set him back on his heels, I strode away, ignoring the fact that his amused laugh once again followed me.

Throne of Glass ( Throne of Glass1) by Sarah J. Maas

Hello to all!

i do hope this first month of 2015 has been better for you that it has been for me. On a side note, the last christmas package reached its recipient finally ( yes more than one month of delay... the postal service can be slower than a slug) so i will be able to share with you some pictures like i was asked to but before we come to that let's see this week review.

I told you that, this January,i was starting on "new" to me books and or author and series that i do follow up this month so this time it's a new author and new series with Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas.  I was gifted this for my birthday but told the series had cliffhanger so i prefered to wait until i got all the released books so far... it's not the case yet but the temptation was too great especially when i discovered this was the chosen reads for the TBR read along ^^ so without more delay here is my opinion of " Throne of Glass"

Enjoy!

Short description from goodreads :

After serving out a year of hard labor in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin. Her opponents are men-thieves and assassins and warriors from across the empire, each sponsored by a member of the king's council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she'll serve the kingdom for three years and then be granted her freedom.

Celaena finds her training sessions with the captain of the guard, Westfall, challenging and exhilarating. But she's bored stiff by court life. Things get a little more interesting when the prince starts to show interest in her... but it's the gruff Captain Westfall who seems to understand her best.

Then one of the other contestants turns up dead... quickly followed by another.

Can Celaena figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim? As the young assassin investigates, her search leads her to discover a greater destiny than she could possibly have imagined.

My opinion:
I’m really happy to have decided to finally start this series because this story is as good as I hoped it would be. There is action, mystery, suspense and some romance and you get quite attached to the characters it was a really great surprise.

Celaena is really a strong minded character to survives what she did and to stay such a kind soul… she is afraid of betrayal but she is not hesitating to save people even if it could not be in her interest. She had a hard past of which we still don’t know a lot but she is a good girl and I would love to discover what the gift she thinks she lost was. And she loves books! I don’t resist character who loves reading.
The only thing bothering me is to see how she is mixing love with attraction….. I’m not fan of love triangle at all so that’s bother me a lot and I hope she will understand quickly as not to get hurt too much.

Doran and Chaol… I’m definitively more for Chaol at this point because he is loyal, honourable,  he is trusting and he does not hesitate to do what he thinks right…. He did gave up his title for example and for a good reason. I like his friendship with Dorian but I fear the Prince does not know  how much Chaol is doing for him…. Because honestly I think if Chaol became  captain of the guard it’s to protect Dorian not because he believes in the king… Dorian is not bad… I think he is quite lost  as he can’t really oppose his father yet even when he hate his actions but at the same time he was too frivolous for me. He does love dogs which makes him more likeable but still….he sound too often like he is playing with others…. For example he knows what Chaol feels but it does not prevent him for wanting Celaena. Also I don’t think he could take a lot of risk to what he wants…. He isn’t determined enough at this time… he could become a good ruler but he needs to mature

Nehemia is in a sense quite like Chaol, like him she is ready to sacrifice a lot for what she believes in and she is taking risks but I do love her friendship with Celaena  and I hope it won’t finish badly for them both.
Now and Pelor were perhaps competitors but part of me wonders why they accepted such a contest as they sound really good… I can only hope we will see more of them and that they will become trusted and loyal allies of  Celaena…; I feel she will really need all the help she can get.

The intrigue was deeper that what I expected but still a little predictable. It’s a universe more complex that we can imagine at first and Sarah J Maas did a great job in giving us glimpse of more little by little to get us addicted and wanting to discover a lot more.  I hope we will learn more about Elena and our heroine relationship.
The King is even more evil that what we could think at first ( oki with him killing thousands and destroying books he was on my hate list already but he is really more dangerous than that)…and he is not the only player with add to the dangerosity….he made a contract quite difficult for Celaena and I fears what is too come.

It’s a great YA fantasy filled with action, some sweet moment and romance… friendship and betrayal… a really interesting universe so I do recommend it if you like those things I will be sure to follow up the series.

Short description from goodreads :

 Let the Sparks Fly

Bliss Russo thought nothing exciting ever happened in her life. Until her building caught on fire, and she had to be carried out of the flames in the arms of a gorgeous fireman. Sure, her apartment is now in shambles, and she'll have to start her huge work project completely from scratch. But at least her love life is finally looking up…if only she can find her red-hot rescuer again.

Dragon shapeshifter Drake Cameron is the last of his clan, and the loneliness is starting to claw at him. He's met only one woman who might be able to stand the shock of his true nature. After all, she barely batted an eyelash when her home burned down. And feeling her curves against him was just as hot as the inferno. Just when he thinks he'll never track her down, she walks into his firehouse—with no idea what she's about to get herself into…

My opinion:
Book 1 “ Flirting under the new moon” was a pleasant read so when I learned that book 2 will focus on dragon I had to try it. I’m happy I did,  it was not an exceptional book but it was the perfect one at the time.
There are some books I get so immersed in it I can’t stop until I finish reading them to the last page… other I don’t like and thus it takes me forever to finish them because I don’t want to give up but I’m not interested. “ How to Date a Dragon” was quite in between…. It was interesting enough that you want to finish it and you do enjoy reading but the plot and writing did not pull me into the story so that I could not take breaks I needed too…. But the author managed so well that even if you stop for a few hours or several days you can start from where you stopped without feeling like you missed something. It was a little like a tv show you need to wait the next episodes but without cliffhanger, stress etc…

I did enjoy this book more than the first one as well, it was a agreeable easy reads perfect for when you are busy or unwell but still want to change your mind with a good book. I appreciated to see a new god” Vulcain” and to see him interact with the characters for once. Honestly I stuill don’t like Gaia… I don’t know I envision her as maternal, kind and protective not like this vindictive b****( Yes  nature can be hard but deep down it’s fair)…the way she acted with dragons  disappointed me to say the least.
Because yes if you imagined you were going to read about dragon, flying in all their glory^^ forget it

Drake is a character I love, responsible, loyal and honest all while being very alpha and protective. He is also quite adaptable and can keep his calm when needed (useful for a firefighter). I loved how he was thinking of Bliss and trying to make her happy while still respecting her independence.
Bliss… I did not like her so much… she is snarky, intelligent but she can think of herself too much and put other in danger while doing so….for example  her choice did not agree with me ( she forgot her decision would affect Drake as well). She is quite determined though ( a good point)

The romance is well told and I loved to have some feedback about the character we met in book 1. The rhythm of the book is regular and the plot interesting while still predictable so you don’t get headache but can enjoy the ride at the pace you want.

It’s not my favourite series at all but I would be happy to read book 3 in the future when I need a light read again.

Score:  3/5
