Rat- Catcher (October Daye 0.1) by Seanan McGuire

Hello to all,

So here the situation is still quite unsure since my mother will only have ( or at least hope so) some answer tomorrow after her scanner, meaning i'm still completly in the expectative. When i will manage to read ( and write my review on what i read), when i will manage to craft again ( my hands are both improving and worsening -_-) all i know is that i will do my best with as a priority the christmas parcels and letters then the reading and of course both of these after my family health.... so far the motivation is still here and that's a lot.

So i couldn't read but i managed to write the review on a novella i finished before all these happened...( and i will perhaps try novella first since i have less time it could be a great idea) anyway  you know how i've come to love the October Daye series and the authors is kind enough to add several short stories to help us learn more about secondary characters.... my favourite being Tybalt i couldn't miss the first novella about his past  published in the anthology " A fantasy Medley2" but don't worry there are a lot of free ones on the author website ( like the second novella about Tybalt!! but better to be read after book5).

Since it's a novella my opinion will be short because i don't want to reveal too much but i enjoyed reading it even if i hoped for a little more ( perhaps novella 2 will correct that;) )

Happy Reading!

Short description from goodreads :

In the year 1666, a young Prince of Cats named Rand dwelt peacefully in Londontown with his beloved sisters, Jill and Colleen. He spent his nights at the theater, drinking in the works of Shakespeare, and had no interest in the day when he would be expected to rise up, challenge his father, and take his place as a King of Cats. For Rand, kittenhood was a wonderful dream, and one that he hoped would last forever.

Dreams end.

All stories have to begin somewhere, and this is where the story of Tybalt, King of Dreaming Cats, began: with a boy, and his sisters, and the city that he loved and never planned to leave. When duty calls, can he make the choice that will keep them all safe, without giving up everything that he has ever wanted from his life?

Rat-Catcher can be read at any point, as it is background for the series. It is best read after at least two volumes of the main series, to give a firm grounding in the character.

Rat-Catcher was originally published in the anthology A Fantasy Medley 2, released in December of 2012. This limited-edition volume can be obtained directly from Subterranean Press.

My opinion:
As a fan of Tybalt , I was expecting a lot from this short story… I wanted to know how he became who he is, why he is so different etc….. perhaps I was expecting too much. Oh I liked this story no problem on that side and it’s true I would never expected him to become king like that but at the same time it wasn’t enough ^^ perhaps too short for my taste even if there isn’t a cliffhanger and the story is complete. It’s a really emotional read and while the humour is there it’s not as present as in the series and we learn a lot more about the cait sidhe customs which aren’t as kind as we could hope ( hey they are a kind of fey so it’s quite understandable)

Perhaps I was simply disappointed he didn’t try harder with the actors….he did try yes but since he was already breaking the rules couldn’t do it a little more just to be sure they knew and understood? However he is still young here and perhaps he simply couldn’t^^ after seeing all proud and powerful and compassionate in the series it was strange to see him as a kitten only  but at the same time all these events did built him as the Tybalt we all love.

I’m really glad I waited to read this because it’s true you enjoy it more when you already know the characters from the main series…. Now I’ve learned there is another short story about Tybalt and I can’t wait to have the time to read it  but I must advance in the main series first since it’s recommended^^. I won’t forget to let you know about it. If you love the October Daye series those shorts stories are really excellent bonus but, thankfully , you don’t have to read them to enjoy the main series it’s just some extra if you can’t wait until the next instalment^^.

Dead Radiance (Valkyrie1) by T.G. Ayer

Hello to all,

i will be quick because i'm super busy but first i wanted to apologies for posting so late, my hands didn't improve so i was delayed but the worse came yesterday. My mother ghad to go the emergencies because she couldn't stand up or walk anymore...after a lot of panic , stress and wait we still don't know the reason because she will need a scanner and it couldn't be scheduled before monday ( or to be precise monday they will tell us when it will take place, really soon i hope).

Anyway as you can undestand she is my top priority right now so less reading, less time to comment etc and i absolutely don't know how long it can last. i will do my best to post at least once a week but i will see what i manage to do. Thanks for your understanding

Now today i'm sharing with you an author,T. G . Ayer, Brenda made me discover because she is really a fan and i must say i do understand why.  it has everything i love, romance, Norse mythology and some shifters (typical one but still shifters) so here comes Dead Radiance first book in the Valkyrie series.

Short description from goodreads :

Bryn Halbrook had always seen the glow. But it is only when her best friend dies that she discovers the meaning of those beautiful golden auras — Death. Alone, lost in the foster system, she struggles to understand who she is and why she was cursed with the ability to see the soon-to-be-dead.

The new foster kid, Aidan, isn’t helping any. Mr. Perfect seems to fit in no matter what, making her feel even more pathetic. But when his affections turn to her, Bryn finds him hard to resist. Impossible actually. A mystery himself, Aidan disappears, leaving behind a broken heart and a mysterious book that suggests Bryn might not be entirely human.

Bryn stands at the threshold of a journey of discovery. Will destiny help her find herself, find her purpose and her place in a world in which she’d never belonged?

My opinion:
When Brenda introduced me to this story my first thought was ”Yes Norse Mythology!”  I haven’t come across than many books with this topic and since I love mythology as a whole and Norse one being in my favourites I had to learn more. Then I was told about great writing style of the author I couldn’t wait any longer and as soon as the opportunity presented itself I picked the book….. I don’t regret my choice for a second.

This is a really fascinating story, the beginning is a little slow and despite the fact I immediately guessed what professor Halbrook was doing and disliked him for that I got immersed in the story and loved to see how Bryn discovered another dimension with all her misconceptions. Oh I still would like some explanation about why he did what he did to see if he can be redeemed in my eyes but we forget her past easily to jump in Bryn’s adventures.

I really to see how emotional she was because it made her easy to relate to, Joshua was important for her and loosing him was a great blow… the way people acted was so mean and the school director really disgusted me. He should have tried to help not to judge like that, what happen with Brody was heartbreaking (still I must learn what happen to him after because we are still in the dark)  and Miss Cluster was the kind of mother figure Bryn should have found a long time ago, she takes the side of the children she is fostering and she is a gentle soul ( fierce warrior underneath too) it was great to see one positive person in the city.

I’m still partial to Aidan though ( I guess like miss Cluster) , I can understand why he did what he did but at the same time I find it hard to forgive….i will need to see more of his action to be sure he is right for Bryn ( what can I said I do want Joshua to have his HEA too, he is deserving it)… I’m curious to know if Aidan is the reincarnation of Brunhilde’s lover, the one for who she chose to live (and die) in the mortal realms after all we learn that she chose to live with her soulmate, only love but no name, no more explanation and since I love romance I need more ^^ (which made me curious too why Asgard never tried to get the body back, it would have been less risky in my opinion)

The romance is slow since Bryn and Aidan must first learn about themselves and to trust each other again but it’s there and it’s lovely written. I was fond of Sigrun and Fenrir  too. The Norse mythology is explained enough if the reader never heard of it ( after both film with Thor it would be surprising though ;) ) The action was fast paced and it was amusing to see how much Bryn has of instant knowledge when in other part she is so naïve.

Really it was a great read and I can only regret the cliffhanger fortunately book 2 and now 3 are already released so we don’t have to wait to long to jump on them. To recommend

Wolfborn by Sue Bursztynski

Good evening!

The story of how i come across this book is one that i remember fondly so i will share it with you before my opinion on the book.  I discovered the other during a blog hop and I found her really kind, she is a teacher and love to promote reading to the children and it’s something I really appreciate so I decided to follow her.

Later to answer some reader’s inquiry about book translation she gave us a little excerpt with its translation in several languages, French included. However since it’s my native language I immediately saw it wasn’t a proper translation at all (it didn’t made sense) I wanted to tell her, explain and translate it properly but at the same time I was terrified to hurt her feelings or something… still trying to be the most polite about it possible I explained what didn’t work and offered my translation….she answered me and she wasn’t angry at all quite the opposite, relieved I was even more interested in her book after that. I had entered a contest to win it without success when months later, there was a new one. Determined I tried again and I won! Fabulous, no? But what is even better is that …she remembered me!!! She really did and I got a really personalised email that made jump everywhere with joy.

I received my book from Australia later and I was exalted however I couldn’t read it then…. You see I wanted to be objective about it and since I was so happy about how I got it and the kindness of the author Sue I was afraid I would be biased if I read it immediately or worse I could be disappointed after too high expectations so I put it on my night table looking at it longing… then I decided the best way to be right and still promote it at the best of my abilities was to review it during a challenge so I could get others interested….so here we are during the shifter month ( I waited all year for it;) ) and I’m so happy  to share this with you -I will more than probably do a post in French too but this one being long already it will stay unilingual for now-

Happy Reading

Short description from goodreads :

Break the curse or howl forever.

Etienne, son of a lord in the kingdom of Armorique, goes to train as a knight with Geraint of Lucanne. Geraint is brave and kind, a good teacher and master - but he has a secret that he has kept from his family. He is bisclavret, a born werewolf. When Geraint is betrayed, Etienne must ally with the local wise-woman and her daughter, themselves bisclavret, to save his lord. But time is running out. If Geraint's enemies have their way, Geraint will soon be trapped in his wolf form.

And Etienne has his own secret. The decisions he makes will change his life forever . . .

Inspired by a medieval romance, this engaging novel forces us to question everything we thought we knew about werewolves.

My opinion:
Oh why I didn’t read this before?!  Yes I wanted to read this when shifters were the topic to help it promote better but It’s so good I can’t wait I managed to wait so long.  Really one started I couldn’t put it done and a few hours later I was babbling about it to my mother, explaining with such enthusiasm she made me sit…. Now I must write what I felt and thought and it’s more difficult because I do want to do justice to the story without any spoiler if I can manage.

First, I must precise it’s a retelling of a really old tale with of course the author‘s ideas original and wonderfully written. In fact, if you just pick the book without any prior research you don’t even feel it’s a retelling since Sue offer us a complex universe she made her own. Now after thinking about it, after learning how she came to write this and some info on the “original” tale she was inspired by, I think writing a retelling must be even harder than writing a book.  Why? Because when you create your own universe you are free to set the rules you want, you want magic or not, speaking werewolves or not it’s nearly complete liberty. If you are doing a retelling, you got some free license of course, to make it entertaining you must capture the feel of the story and make it your own all the while staying true and not betraying the original tales…. That’s a hard work to find that balance, in my opinion. Really in this case the result is splendid.

They are werewolves like the title and cover let you guess but here there is some specificity I enjoyed a lot.  You get 2 or even 3 kind of shifters to be precise. You have the “Bisclavret”, who are the true werewolves, those who are born like and are considered like the children of Kernun, a male God of the hunt and other things. The history said they were wolves who won the right or gift to shift in human form and lives between normal people. They can shift when they want, the moon has nothing to do with that (by the way they got 3 moons in that universe^^) but they must do it regularly because it’s something they enjoy.( in a sense they revert to their original form which must feel good).  To shift back to human form they must have their own clothes.
Bisclavret have become rare, only a few of them is left.

Now I guess I should precise that werewolves there isn’t something bad in itself, lot of countries in this world accept them as long as they behave, only some part hunt them but only because of fear and religious beliefs. Why religion? Because of the second kind of werewolves those who are called werewolves…they became like that for making a pact with black magic, bad deities thus are a little see as demons and those religious ones don’t make the difference. For them all man becoming a wolf is a bad one. However in the part were the pagan beliefs stay strong it’s not the same because they know there is also a third kind…if a werewolf has children they will be like him even if they never made any pact with the devil and thus they judge on the acts not on the fact they change into a wolf…..sadly if one misbehave he is killed.

It’s a world a little like our medieval one, but with magic really alive. Fae are wondering among people sometimes, the traditional celebrations are still alive while the religious ( the Nozrians) would like to see it gone but it survived, in a lighter version that they were perhaps but people still believe. It was really easy to get immersed in it and the way the paranormal, fantasy is used to convey message is something I really enjoy , if a younger one could read this book and understand how you must accept other not judge them on their looks or on what he was told he would be fabulous.

In this story we discover a knight Sir Geraint, a well loved one, respected by his people; the only detail is that he is a bisclavret and kept that secret even from his wife. Etienne is a young boy and like it’s was the use in medieval time young lads from nobility were sent away to complete their education as a knight….Etienne is terrified to become a wolf after his mother told him some of his ancestor was one. He gets fostered at Geraint household start as a page. It doesn’t take him long to see the strange behaviour of his master and how is wife is attracted to another visiting noble however when he learns the truth he won’t fear it and he is attracted to Jeanne, another bisclavret even before knowing who and what she is. When Geraint is lost, prisoner of his wolf form, Etienne stays loyal to him and he will do all he can to help saving him. This is a story of acceptance and courage, how Etienne discovers more about himself and the world, with a sweet romance and a lot of magic and adventure. We see how fear can lead to disastrous decision, how envy and greed can destroy more than it looks…. And so much more

It’s definitively I book I recommend and as soon as it gets translated in French I would definitively ask teacher to use it because it really a fabulous story and still instil some moral and teenagers often learn more in indirect ways^^. You love fantasy, fae, legend action and romance TRY THIS BOOK! You won’t regret it

Jacob (Clan des Nocturnes 1) par Jacquelyn Frank

Coucou!,

Bonne Lecture
Editeur VF: milady  2012
Titre original:The Nightwalkers : Jacob ( edited 2006)
Genre: romance paranormale, bit lit

Score:  4/5

Short description from goodreads :

When she was first trapped in the Ward mansion, an unwanted guest to millionaire and vampire Morgan Ward, Angelina could think of nothing else but how to break the compulsion that kept her prisoner. Her reluctant warden was certainly sexy and intriguing, but his standoffish behavior was outputting to say the least.

After a couple of weeks, however, after several ‘mind-trips’ into a fantasy reality in which Morgan is a perfect gentleman – and perfect lover – Angelina finds herself falling for him and struggling to understand why he tries so hard to push her away. How can a man be charming and attentive one minute… and yet deliberately infuriating the next?

A visit from Irene, this time more interested in a stroll down memory lane than in murder, starts to explain Morgan’s fears. But can Angelina break down his barriers before it’s finally time to leave, or will his past prove to be too deep of a wound to heal?

My opinion:
It’s becoming difficult to express my opinion without any spoilers since this book is released under the form of a serial, at least in first time.
I enjoyed the fact the book is progressing at a medium rhythm wit no inconsistency, I’m not sure it’s something that easy to achieve especially when you have several works under progress. The characters stay true to themselves and I was happy to read about them again.

This part is really steamy but also highly emotional since we finally learn about Melody and Morgan’s past.  It help to understand Morgan but at the same time it made me more angry with him since he kind of gave up a long time ago. Now what was the best is that for the first time Angelina takes things in her hand, she won some assurance. For a moment she is not the frail terrified captive but a woman determined to show her point and get what she wants. It’s done step by step, it’s really realistic behaviour and I could really understand how frustrated she was becoming.

Delilah and Irene are present and still the same i mean Irene can be so frightening, Delilah , perhaps she had really good intentions but it’s hard to tell.

The ending is definitively a cliffhanger unfortunately and not really an angsty one but still waiting for next part will be hard.
