Short description from goodread :

Mom touched my underdress—a gown made six hundred years before—and her eyes widened as she rubbed the raw silk between thumb and forefinger. She turned and touched Lia’s gown. “Where did you get these clothes?”

Gabi knows she’s left her heart in the fourteenth century and she persuades Lia to help her to return, even though they know doing so will risk their very lives. When they arrive, weeks have passed and all of Siena longs to celebrate the heroines who turned the tide in the battle against Florence—while the Florentines will go to great lengths to see them dead.

But Marcello patiently awaits, and Gabi must decide if she’s willing to leave her family behind for good in order to give her heart to him forever.

My opinion:

This second book contains more violence than the first and Gabi endure much more too. However in the mist of these tortures, treacheries, illness and deaths the reader can also find good example of sacrifice, selfless, courage and honour. Firenze is against Sienna (and thus Castello Forelli) and Gabi and her sister are capital for both camps either as a symbol of courage and force either as bait, a valuable prize if captured. Being a hero is a good thing sometimes.

We discover that not all is how it seems and that there are some loyalties deeper than other. We find again Lord Paratore and he didn’t change at all, but we discover Lord Greco, a firenze Knight childhood friend of Marcello.
The tension is high and it helps to see a new aspect of the character. Gabi isn’t only a warrior she also has a deep instinctual sense of the politic. Stronger than a average modern girl, she can be captured, hurt and it takes more to break her. I’m not sure I could do the same in similar circumstances. She proves than she is very loyal and she admits her love for Marcello.

Marcello was true to his words and waited for her he even made some preparations (so perfect). He tries to protect them from the politic world too however seeing as he isn’t a lord but only the second son his power is less than some of his enemies. Even then, he still stays by her side and helps her at the best of his abilities. We also discover than Luca is fonder of Lia that he told her and he show how good of a friend and knight he is.

What I loved less is than the way mother and daughters think about the time travel experience. For a scientist, their mother doesn’t seem cautious enough for me. In the same time, I understand their motive but it’s a bit too selfish in my opinion.

The rhythm of the story is rapid and the writing immerses the reader in a past time that as much as we are happy to be safe here and now and despite the danger we would like to discover. It's quite intense.
I didn’t want to stop reading it and when it was time to eat it was really difficult to put this book aside and at the end you just want to jump on the next one. A really good book to recommend.

Score:  4/5
