Malfunction ( Dark Desires origins 1) by Nina Croft [early review]

Hello to all,

I was debating what to share with you today  and i ended up choosing to do an early review for a book that really surprised me and which deserve some spotlight. Also i wanted to inform you that the series from which this one is a prequel has the first book "Break Out" free at the time being so even if it's to read later better jump on it in case you can't wait after reading this story when it release later.

Happy Reading!

Description from goodreads :

Investigator, Sergeant Logan Farrell, has never been convinced the human race deserves saving. But it looks like he’s got the job anyway.

It’s been five hundred years since we fled the remnants of a dying Earth in search of a new home. Twenty-four ships, each carrying ten thousand Chosen Ones. All sleeping peacefully...until people start dying in cryo.

Malfunction or murder? Hopefully, the former—a serial killer in the fleet would be drastic for morale. But Logan is determined to find the truth. Unfortunately, he’s got a new partner—and he works best alone.

Katia Mendoza, hot-shot homicide detective, has been woken from cryo to assist with the investigation. But is she really interested in solving the case, or does she have her own agenda?

Before he can answer that question, though, they become targets themselves.

Nothing like a few near misses with death to bring a couple together, and Logan finds himself falling for the alluring detective. But he doesn’t know that Katia is hiding a secret.

It’s not only humans who fled the dying Earth.

My opinion:
I love it , i really love it!! to be honest i jumped on this without knowing what to expect because it was written by Nina Croft and i loved all i've read from her so far so i wanted more.  It's what i would call a sci-fi paranormal romance suspense.....strange mix but wonderfully written!

You get shifters, vampires, fae etc and of course human too but in the space and of course there is some murders or malfunctions so an investigation is set to get the bottom of this.....However, if Katia is sent from the second ship in hope to find what is happening while keeping the existence of the others a secret,  she must work with Logan, human empath and soldier wanting to fit in  .Both have just been awoken from a 500y sleep in a cryotube and they have a lot to adjust to  as well as deciding if they trust each other and what to do about an investigation some refuse to see be done.

I really got immersed in the story quickly and i loved it, the investigation is really well done with twists and lot of action as well as numerous humour touch so it was captivating and easily read. Rico the vampire captain is really funny and protective of his folk.  Katia is so funny especially when she is hungry  and
Logan is really intelligent  as well as courageous. they are steamy scenes well written but i enjoyed all the rest a lot more. Secondary characters like Callum were especially funny and interesting to read about, Dylan  is a curious one etc so really you have at least one character you will want to survive.
I had my suspicions about the culprit identity  ( and i was right) what i was a little disappointed with is the ending....it's kind of HEA but culprit has it too easy  and i hope in the next book we will see some consequences fall upon that being.

i'm really curious about this series now so i definitively plan to keep reading it as i want more of these characters.

Score:  4,5/5

Druid Vices and a Vodka ( The Guild Codex: Spellbound 6) by Annette Marie

Hello to all,

While i'm starting 2020 deeply sick i still had the pleasure to read the latest release of my top favourite series discovered in 2019...series that is supposed to get it's conclusion later this year but for now we can still enjoy it fully, and you have time to start it if you haven't yet, but i can't insist enough: you must read it in order.

Enjoy and Happy Reading!

Description from goodreads :

I've said it before, but sometimes I'm a bad person. I cheated on my twelfth grade math final, I've run countless yellow lights, and I gossip about how hot my kickass best friends are. (Good thing my job as a guild bartender doesn't require moral perfection.)

But there's bad, and then there's bad. And I'm not sure which applies to a certain dark druid/wanted criminal/reluctant friend of mine. His transgressions include black-magic dealings, kidnapping, and murder, and he's about to add "revenge-fueled killing spree" to his resume—if I don't stop him.

Should I stop him?

He and his nemesis are gearing up to tear each other apart, rogues and vultures are converging with their sights on the spoils, and the guilds that would normally stomp them into the ground are under attack. We're on the brink of an all-out criminal turf war, and my time to decide is almost up.

Who's the real bad guy ... and do I dare stand in his way?

My opinion:
What a rollercoaster! i'm really glad i could read this in one sitting because if i had to take a break i would have been in a state of anguish rarely reached because of a book.  This is fabulous, there is tension, anguish, humour, lot of action and sometimes really moving moments....i absolutely loved this new instalment and really the next one can't  be fast enough at this point.

I loved Zak since the beginning i still feel for him because we really don't have a lot  of insights about what he lived but  as much i appreciate him i could also strangle him .He can be so obtuse and stupid that 's desesperating ... he doesn't realise how much he is trusting Tori even if he gave her some strong artefacts and how protective he can be of her at time...when it's matter he gets so stubborn and single minded that's a wonder how some fae didn't' take offence. Only Aaron could be as bad as him at times, they sure share some strong points.

Tori is as wonderful and loyal as always , she is determined to protect all of her friends  even against their wishes and she can take huge risks for that.  I particularly loved how she is starting to open to Erza.

The story is fast and we get immersed immediately, there were more interactions between Tori and Robin too this time and i can't wait to get the point of view of Robin about all the new events. Darius get even more mysterious as well and i would love to learn more about his past adventures.

This series is really addictive and wonderfully written so if you haven't started it yet  this is the time to start because this need to read in order. Each character  has its own appeal and  we can only want more of all of them.

Happy Reading!

Publisher: Tonya Kappes

Genre: cozy mystery, southern
Violence: mild

Language: normal

Public: 16+

Description from goodreads :

Discover the southern life of Bernadette Butler, along with the eccentric and lovable citizens, along with all the fur babies, who live in Sugar Creek Gap in this NEW southern cozy mystery series by USA TODAY Bestselling Author Tonya Kappes.

Mail Carrier Bernadette Butler makes sure she checks on all of her elderly customers on her mail carrier route during the colder months. It makes her feel good and lets face it, she's trying to keep her mind off the feelings she's having for her deceased husband's best friend, Mac Tabor. Which makes putting everyone before her is easy.

Until she notices one particular customer's dog is on the loose, Bernadette takes the dog back and something isn't right. The door is open. Bernadette goes in to check on her customer only to find him murdered!

Bernadette knows someone knows something about the murder in the small knit community. Now that she's help solve one murder, she can't resist to try her hand at it again...of course not without the help of the FRONT PORCH LADIES and Vince!

My opinion:
An excellent intrigue, i really loved how the investigation was written with all the twists to make your doubt your first impressions and such. This series is becoming better with each book it seems so it was a real pleasure and i can't wait to see which adventure Bernadette will have next.

On element i love in this series are all the secondary characters  like the porch gals who are both funny and attentive but also Mac even if he can be a little  clumsy with his words he really love Bernadette and they act like people of their age which is great (after all you can be in love at every age not only when you are a teenager)  so it's another good point for this series.

I guess i was just sad about the victims because i really loved him in the first book so knowing he won't be there anymore i'm feeling a little sad. If you are a pet lover, this is also a series for you as you get to meet Rowena the cat and now a dog both having an important role in the book they are not just cited in passing.

This is a very good southern cozy mystery with a touch of romance, humour and good investigation , it also can be read as stand alone as Tonya Kappes gives enough info about book 1 so if you missed it no fear you can jump on this one first  and still love it!

to recommend!

Description from goodreads :

As a guild bartender, I can handle pretty much anything—mages, sorcerers, witches, the occasional demon. But show me anything family-related and I'd rather run for the hills. It doesn't even have to be my family.

So I have no idea why I thought spending the holidays with Aaron's mom and pop was a good idea.

Meeting his famous parents is already terrifying enough, but I've got a bigger problem. Students of his family's renowned mage academy are being attacked on the grounds—and somehow no one has seen a single assailant? Unexplained tracks litter the nearby woods, rumors of forbidden alchemy are circulating the campus…and Ezra has been acting strangely since we arrived.

Something deadly is brewing in the shadow of Sinclair Academy, and the longer we take to uncover it, the more dangerous it becomes. But no matter the risk, we'll protect the students.

And Aaron's parents too, I suppose. If we have to.

My opinion:
Such an adventure! Tori sure is attracting trouble what should have holidays become a hunt with a limited time to save a friend the whole added with arrogant bunch of elitist mages with ego bigger than mountains. I really loved to learn more about Aaron as we meet his family but i also really wanted to punch him when we saw his darker side..;i still wonder why Tori kept cool about it and didn't punch him, Aaron is sure lucky to have friends like Kai and Erza.
This time we focus on shifters and we learn more about what they are in this universe...but we also discover other side of magic  and how some mages are elitist and putting their kind of magic above other. We get to see more of Sin as well and it was good to see how she became real friend with Tori;  both are out of their world in the Aaron's family home and it's not that easy for them.

What i loved even more was learning more about Erza.....he is lucky to have Tori watching over him especially since it's putting her in difficult situation. And of course Tori does find some interesting items along teh way ( even if this time she may not have a use for them herself)

This story is full of action and information , it's a real page turner as the characters have a limited time to succeed you can't stop you need to se what happen  as you get completely immersed in this addictive series.  There is the action, the humour as Tori can't stay silence in front of injustice and also cute moment when she interacts with fae ....but also some moment filled of emotion ... which will make you the next book as soon as possible.
It's a must read for sure but following the series in order.

An excellent book to recommend

Valleys, Vehicles & Victims ( A Camper & Criminals Cozy 9) by Tonya Kappes

Hello to all,

Fall is here, cold and rainy ....perfect weather for an excellent southern cozy mystery book! We are lucky that the new Tonya Kappes's book release this week  with a fall setting even so grab a good cup of tea and.....Happy reading!

Publisher: Tonya Kappes
Publication: 2019
Genre: cozy mystery, southern
Violence: mild
Language: normal

Public: 16+

Description from goodreads :

Welcome to Normal, Kentucky where nothing is normal!

The Daniel Boone National Forest is gorgeous in the fall. The leaves have painted the sides of the mountains with yellow, oranges, reds and browns you won't see anywhere else. That's why it's such a popular destination for weddings!

When a wedding party show up at Happy Trails Campground, Mae West is thrilled. She's all things girly and excited to assist the bride in all things southern, which is what the bride is hankering for.

Mae recognizes the parents of the bride when they arrive. They are from her past. The past she's been desperately trying to escape...especially since it was the time she was married to Paul West. This just isn't any couple, it's the owners of the famous Moonbucks Coffee Company.

Determined to get the happy couple married off and on their way, hoping to see some of her past drive off forever, Mae volunteers herself and the Laundry Club ladies to become the wedding coordinators.

The wedding is set to take place in the beautiful wedding barn at the Old Train Station Motel, only Gert Hobson, the owner of Trails Coffee Shop and providing the coffee for the happy couple, has decided there's no way she's going to help out with Tom Moon's daughter's wedding since she claims how years ago Tom Moon STOLE her coffee blend recipe known today as the special Moonbucks blend.

A public fight between Gert and Tom leaves Gert a prime suspect after a member of the wedding party is found dead at the wedding venue. There might not be a happily ever after for the bride to be or Gert Hobson if Mae West and the Laundry Club ladies don't solve the murder before the wedding party's RV rolls out of town.

My opinion:

It's always a pleasure to spent time with people from Normal, there is always something happening and mostly it's murder since Mae joined them. No matter what  Mae and the ladies of the Laundry club can't stay out of it especially when one of their friend  is in trouble so when Gert is suspect in a murder, they want to find the real murderer.

It's full of humour and action too because the girls are doing a real investigation not just gossiping. I really loved the investigation part as the intrigue was really well written with twists to keep us doubting the culprit identity and motive.
I loved also to see how the people from Normal got protective of Mae proof she is really one of them now and we do learn more about her past too which was great.

The only thing i liked less was Hank's attitude....really he fell in love with Mae but still want to change her, tries to blackmail her ....he disappointed me. He can be a wonderful protective guy but not dictate Mae life's so i'm curious to see how they will solve that together.

A great southern cozy mystery which can be read as stand alone but so much better  read in order.
