Hello to all,


                         I'm really sorry for being so quiet lately but i got sick and it was more serious than i first thought so during 3weeks i couldn't read or do anything i was down with the fever and pain, it's not finished yet but at least my mind is clearer. However because of that i'm late to review some books so thank  for the authors' understanding and i will do my best to read and review as quickly as possible to get back on track... that's my priority.

So i'm starting with Unspeakable the second book in the Beyond Human series.... if you remember i loved book 1 so when i was offered the opportunity to read and review book 2 i was jumping with joy.... i'm not disappointed at all! Nina Croft sure did wonders but let see that in detail.

My opinion:

         Let's start with some advice. If the little recap at the beginning of this second book  is quite useful and could help someone new to the series to feel less lost i do recommend to start with book 1 Unthinkable as this universe is really rich and every element can be important later so better not to miss anything.

Now that this precaution is done  i must say that i was more than happily surprised... book 1 was fantastic and i loved it, this one is as good or even better it's captivating and intriguing... it's the kind of book you must read in one sitting simply because you can't put it done.  the idea is original and it's a strange but excellent mix between paranormal romance and sciences fiction  with that second genre a bit more present in this instalment. Really it's a series that once started you want to finish but that will require some patience as it's not written yet.

Keeping the quality in a series when  book 1 was great is not easy but Nina Croft sure manages it at the perfection. We do get enough recaps to  fall back into the new instalment without trouble and at the same time we just have enough to keep us on the edge of our seat ready to jump on any new info to try to learn more about all the mysteries involved.

I really loved Ethan, despite being conclave he is deep down a good guy and his loyalty to his friend makes him even more adorable... he is perfect for Sadie, they have so much in common that it can be funny because despite this deep connection  they still tiptoe around each other for a long moment....i loved that because both character with their past  need time to accept what is happening and fully trust the other it's perfectly natural.

The link between Sadie and the dog Max is absolutely cute too and seen we see the others member of the tribe i hope that we will see him again in the rest of the series as well.

Sadie is a bit of a wild element in the tribe, she is so full of anger that she has difficulties to follow orders ( not as much as Kaithlin but still) and that leads her  into danger a bit too often fortunately Jake knows her well and thus is ready to protect her when it's needed while giving her as much as freedom as it's possible - yes really Jake is the perfect Alpha- When Sadie sees a man in her dreams at first she doesn't over think it and simply enjoy those dreams but when she sees him in real, she has to investigate...while keeping the real reason secret.

I really loved the story it was perfectly balanced between the investigation, action, romance, new elements...secondary characters are so funny and interesting. i really loved the poor Fergus so loyal and so protective of Ethan but also liking Sadie without showing it. We do learn a lot in this book but Kane mission is still a mystery and we end up with more question than answers but fortunately the good guys are winning some battle.... now will Kane manage to get his soul mate^^ we will see in the future  but i already imagine his pain as his hands will be full .. that with his mind a little narrow when it comes to his mission it could be funny to watch.

So this really a series to discover ( but in order) and i recommend it  without hesitation while i can't wait for book 3.

Fatal Rendez-Vous ( Chasseuses d’Aliens tome1) par Gena Showalter

Bonjour à tous,

                   J'ai oublié de posté un avis en français le mois passé donc il est prioritaire ce mois-ci car étrangement ces derniers temps j'ai un peu plus de mal à lire des livres dans ma langue maternelle qu'en anglais.

Quoi qu'il en soit  je m'y suis mise et avec d'autant plus d'enthousiasme que j'avais depuis des mois sur mon étagère ce tome 1 " Fatal rendez-vous" et que Gena Showalter est sur ma "wishlist" avec  plusieurs autres séries alors celle-ci n'y était pas mais puisque j'avais l'opportunité de finalement découvrir cette auteur je n'allais pas la laisser passer. Surtout qu'on dirait que je suis curieusement attirées par les livres  de romance incluant les aliens dernièrement.
 Au final, le genre d'écriture me plait mais l'univers un peu moins donc il y a des chances que les séries qui étaient sur ma liste soient celles pour moi , on ne le découvrira que plus tard ( en français ou en anglais d'ailleurs) mais pour l'heure voici mon avis sur le premier tome de la série " Chasseuses d'Aliens"

Avis:

          Une surprise…. Et c’est un léger euphémisme car ce livre m’a vraiment prise au dépourvu, je voulais découvrir cette auteur et je ne le regrette pas mais j’étais loin de m’imaginer qu’elle emploierai un langage si cru dès les première pages.  Toutefois je tiens à préciser que ce n’étais pas vulgaire du tout, le personnage  principale Mia analyse la scène de manière analytique sans plus mais je ne m’attendais pas à  une telle situation dès le début or je dois admettre que cela nous plonge très bien dans le bain, on est immédiatement   tiré hors de notre univers et plongé dans celui de Mia sans difficulté.

L’intrigue est également bien ficelée, les personnages sont bien construits même si on n’en apprends d’avantage que sur quelques membres de l’équipe même ceux dont on sait très peu sont assez attachants…Mia est une traqueuse elle est membre de l’ AIR qui est un service très spécifique majoritairement composé d’hommes. Elle est donc très déterminée et pas tellement féminine… j’ai aimé comment ses hommes la respectaient et lui faisaient confiance envers et contre tout. Même si parfois elle n’est pas très « juste «  avec eux  , avec une bonne intention c’est certain mais elle n’a pas l’habitude de mettre des gants et forcément ça inclus de blesser les autres parfois.

Kyrin est aussi un personnage que j’aimerai voir approfondi, oh on en apprend bien sur lui et sa romance avec Mia est parfaitement écrite, ni trop rapide ni trop lente mais suite à certains évènements j’aimerais bien  savoir comment ça se passe exactement pour lui. Il est notre lien d’entrée dans le monde des aliens et j’aimerais en lire plus.

Gena  ne nous dévoile que partiellement l’univers qu’elle a créé, assez pour l’histoire aient du sens mais pas assez pour me satisfaire pleinement ainsi je suis pas tellement sure de savoir si c’est une version de notre monde dans le futur par exemple ou si  c’est un univers parallèle en somme. Une chose est certaine, je n’apprécie pas trop les droits que les humains ont versus ceux des aliens….

Bref j’ai passé un assez bon moment bien que trop court et je reste avec un peu trop de questions sans réponse à mon goût d’autant plus que d’après le résumé du tome 2 ce sera d’autres personnages, je ne sais donc pas avec certitude si nous reverrons Kyrin et mia et son équipe alors je crois que je vais attendre avant de tenter de poursuivre cette série d’autant plus que cette auteur en a bien d’autres à nous offrir et que je trouverais peut-être parmi elles une qui me conviendra mieux.

Synopsis

 The universe’s expansion is nearing its inevitable end and everything is being devoured by entropy. L'expension de l'univers approche sa fin inévitable et tout est détruit par enthropie. La clé pour un futur est une source d'énergie disparue, un être métaphysique légendaire seulement connu au travers d'anciens récits. Le dernier espoir pour l'univers mourrant est de réveiller ce "Gardien" qui possède la capacité d'intervenier en pensée et physiquement sur l'univers entier. Lui seul pourrait raviver les braises d'un nouveau cycle universel.

Les races plus avancées encore existantes veulent désespérément survivre et envoient des équipes avec pour mission de chercher cet être légendaire. Une de ses équipes se matérialise de manière inexpliquée sur un monde primitif habité par les Labateen, un peuple de guerrier de l'âge de pierre. Là, ils font la conniassance de Kara, une jeune guerrière Labateen exclue de son clan. Kara connait des détails à propos du récit sur le "Gardien" qui semblent être bien plus que des coincïdences même si pour kara ils ne sont que la voie de Dieu.

Kara est-elle la clé pour trouver le longtemps perdu " Gardien"? Et quid des races qui croient que l'existence devrait s'arrêter et qui ne vont pas rester les bras croisés à attendre que d'autres altèrent la fin de l'univers.Les idéaux sont confrontés à un pragmatisme brutal alors qu'une confédérations de races peinent à survivre et à sauver l'existence.

My opinion:

         

This story is interesting because it covers a lot of topics we have allusion about eugenism when people from Labateen are killed at birth if there aren’t perfect physically, and also when we heard about some of other planets and civilisation. We also have the theme of no violence versus attack  how must one react when he firmly beliefs in non violence when one wants to kill everything should he stay true to his belief and die or acts differently to survive. It’s an important question and we get both opinion in the story Kara who is from a civilisation where killing is a necessity to survive and Anita whose world condemn all violence and live with a lot of technology. Is Attack first a good defence? Is striking the ennemy before he acts an option? All of that are questioned.

There isn’t a good answer to that, we have to live with the choice we make and thus life in accordance to what we believe but one way isn’t fundamentally better than the other.

Cette histoire est intéressante parce qu’elle aborde divers sujets tels que l’eugénisme lorsque le peuple de Labateen n’hésite pas à tuer les nouveaux nés si ceux-ci ne sont pas physiquement parfaits mais on en a également d’autres allusions lorsqu’on aborde différentes planètes et civilisations. On retrouve aussi le sujet de la non violence versus la légitime défense. Comment réagir lorsque on croit fermement à la non violence et que l’on est confronté à des personnes qui veulent nous exterminer ainsi que d’autres. Doit on périr mais rester fidèles à nos croyances ou agir différemment et assurer notre survie. C’est une question intéressante et on a dans ce récit différents points de vue, celui de Kara qui vit dans un monde ou tuer est une nécessité pour survivre et celle d’Anita qui vient d’un monde ou toute violence est condamnée et ou la technologie devrait répondre à tous les besoin. Est-ce que frapper préventivement un ennemi est une solution avec l’idée que l’attaque est al meilleure défense ?  Toutes questions sont abordées directement ou indirectement. Il n’y a pas, je crois, de bonne réponse à celles-ci, nous devons vivre avec les choix que nous faisons et donc être en accord avec ce que nous croyons mais qui somme nous pour dire qu’une croyance est la seule valable ?

Science fiction has often be used to point out questions about humanity perhaps because it helps to put some distance between us and the action and in the same time it's similar enough for us to identify ourselves and think about it.

La science fiction a souvent été utilisée afin d’aborder des questions à propos de notre humanité, de sa nature et de ses limites parce que bien que les univers décrits souvent très différents nous permettent de prendre de la distance pour réfléchir ;  il y a toujours assez de similitudes pour que nous identifions aux personnages et que nous puissions dès lors nous interroger.

Child of Destiny is also centred about the idea of God and while it’s really well done it could bother the readers who don’t want this topic mentioned at all. We discover here several civilisations with all their own conception and beliefs with similarities and differences

Child of destiny est également centre sur l’idée de Dieu et bien que ce soit très habilement écrit cela pourrait choquer ceux qui ne veulent pas que ce sujet soit aborder de quelque manière que ce soit. Ici nous découvrons plusieurs civilisations qui ont toutes leurs propres croyances et conception d’une puissance supérieur et il est facile de faire le parallèle avec notre propre réalité multiculturelle où des croyances diverses ont autant de similitudes que de différences entre elles.

This story is for mature readers because of all the topics that can be found around the plot however it could be accessible since 16years I think but only with discussion group. I think it could be too hard for them to read alone but for example a teacher could ask them to read the book and after, in class, make a discussion to see what they did thought about it . It could be a link to some more actual problem and a way to broach some topics.

Je recommanderai ce livre pour des lecteurs matures suite aux différents sujets abordés cependant si c’était uen lecture intégrée dans le cadre d’une discussion de groupe il pourrait être accessible des 16ans mais uniquement dans le cadre d’une lecture accompagnée. Par exemple, puisque désormais les professeurs doivent faire des liens entre les matières, cela pour être une bonne idée de lire ce livre et ensuite d’avoir une discussion orientée sur la morale ou l’histoire moderne de nos sociétés et donc de faire des liens avec le cas échéant l’actualité.

The bad point of it is the cliffhanger, I hate those with passion and it’s really hard to wait to read what is following. Also the pictures could make some think it a child book but it's not so there is a small dichotomy between the form and the containt of the book.

Le point négatif de ce livre est le cliffhanger, je déteste vraiment ces fins trop abruptes et à suspense qui rendent difficile l’attente du tome suivant. De plus j’ai eu un petit souci avec les dessins qui pourrait porter à confusion. En effet certains pourraient penser que puisqu’il y a des dessins c’est un livre pour enfant or  ce n’est absolument pas le cas. Il y a là une véritable dichotomie entre la forme et le fond du livre.

Alien in the Family ( Katherine « Kitty » Katt Book3 ) by Gini Koch

Hello again,

                    Like i told you in my last post, i will now post a review about a book from a series i really love now the problem was which one to choose the next one in the I Marshal Stories or one by Gini Koch...hard choice really since there are all in my favorite. Finally, i've decided to go on Kitty Katt book 3 why? Simply so i won't post book 4 directly following book3. So Today we continue with the great series written by Gini Koch

My opinion:

          Each book is bigger than the last and still I hadn’t enough. Gini Koch’s writing is really a pearl, we are immersed in the story without any difficulty and we are part of the team one way or another.

The only part I loved a bit less is the numerous characters , it’s a wedding so even distant relatives are there and believe me if Kitty is feeling overwhelmed and lost, I was the same while trying to remember who is who. It was also fun because I think all the characters were in the same disposition.

We have the pleasure also to discover new kind of aliens, all from the system of Centauri and not all friendly but they are great in their own way and Kitty will discover one soulmate.  ( another one yes but not what you think^^;;;) oh and let’s not forget I WANT A POOF. So great, so cute  so arg… I want one as you will too but they are rare so not easy to get but perhaps I could ask Christopher?

But, more aliens means also more troubles and CIA on the way and that’s a promise for at least verbal fight. Thankfully Kitty can still see the bigger picture and do what is needed to save the day…while trying to keep up with the preparation of her marriage.

We could have thought Gini was going to give them a break but the ending is full of promises so the next book will certainly is as filled with action, romance and humour or perhaps we will discover a new side of kitty. Who Knows?

Enslaved by Starlight by Jessa Slade in the anthogology Hotter on the Edge

                     Nearly the end of the month but i'm far from having finished with the subgenre of science-fiction romance because i've discovered several really good authors and series which i 'm a fan of. So, this month isn't the only one where you will get some review on that genre. However no need to wait so long, today you will again have a review about a novella and one post about a book and before May at least two others books of that genre will be reviewed and posted so enjoy!

First, we start with the last enovella published in the anthology Hotter on the Edge, called "Enslaved by Starlight" and written by Jessa Slade.

My opinion:

          For a novella, the world seemed well constructed for me and the story complete even if the ending opens a door for a sequel if needed. I enjoyed the concept of the crystal and even more the way Corso tries to make Benedetta more self conscious and willing to fight for her freedom too. Even it’s also true that the plot isn’t very original you can spend a good time reading this story. No background is needed to enjoy it. The violence is there yes but the story isn’t dark. Also the romance isn’t immediate, but it’s perfect with the psychology of the characters

Corso is a mercenary because of his honor and the choices he made. It’s also the reason why he resists entering a new conflict before the threat to loose his ship. Benedetta has grown in the perspective to be sold one day and thus when she is “given” in exchange for the safety of her planet and the population she agrees to it without any doubt until the captain refuse her and call her a sex slave.  Together they learn that there is more to it and that while the link created by the special ceremony binding is special and can be great, the choice to choose this life is also important.  Both want to save lives and both are attracted to each others while they try to understand what freedom really means.

I wouldn’t mind a sequel with a bit more of Icere, he would be a great addition to the staff on the ship.

My opinion:

          I admit at first I was a bit afraid, the first book was so great how could the second one be as good…it’s not. This second book is even better than the first one. Full of action, romance, suspense and humour everything is there and so well written. It’s really a good book when your mood is a bit down or when you are tired because chapter after chapter I just went better and better with a huge smile.

In this book we finally meet Chuckie, Kitty best friend and also Jeff’s parents or all family in fact. Those situations are hilarious. Kitty can have a really great intuition but she has none concerning her love life  or the diplomacy she could need because she understand Jeff’s father and mother but still she keep a big mouth even exhausted. Sometimes, things have to be said and she is very honest about her thoughts that for sure.  Now I admit I still have a problem how Jeff “read” her thought while not being telepathe but empathy however I guess that’s all interpretation and psychology after all his life he get some experience at least.

I was really fond of ACE, proof that Centaurions made a lot of errors in the past but can also do great. So powerful but lonely and sad, difficult not to like him on the spot. He will do great so I hope we will see more about him. Also Kevin is a great agent liaison even if he is married ( or perhaps thanks to that fact^^;;)

Kitty is the same as always but we also see a more sensitive side of her. Claudia is so funny, I could easily picture her with the heavy rocket launcher. Jeff is a bit more jealous but this book give us a lot of informations about what his life was and thus we understand his insecurities better. I loved that part of the story

I think I won’t be able to wait before reading the next one even if part of me would like to slow down because once I will be on the last one I will have to wait at least 6month before the new publication because we get only two books a year…what a dilemma

My opinion:

          For the last part of the trilogy I admit I wasn’t sure what to expect but I’m not disappointed at all. This story is less dark than book two, there is nearly none violence at all. The humour is also back something I really appreciate. The romance is predominant and still the product of a courtship and work only it’s really hotter than the first two books and that took me by surprise. It’s the only point that bothered me; I would have preferred softer descriptions but so well done like in Centauri Dawn. The rhythm is rapid but not too much and the writing’s as pleasant as before

This book is centered on Kitari, called Kiti, the best friend of Audra and Garrick the friend and second in command of Darius. They know each other since a long time being both Dragonera and friends of Anton. Kiti is a warrior yes but first she is an anthropologist and linguist, a Tensign, reason for which she was on the team to fetch Audra. In this book, she is grieving her brother, dead with all the other members of Anton’s squad. Also we discovered in book 1 and two that she had a special relationship with Anton so she also lost him when he married Lara. For all these reasons she wants to be part of the team whose mission is to arrest Tybold. However what Kiti doesn’t know is that Darius always loved her from afar waiting his time and a lot more awaits her on this mission to Gregara.

Kitari is a good character, strong, intelligent and honourable. We saw her lost, grieving but also discover that she fight for justice not revenge.

Garrick Marcus is a trusted friend of Darius, and when Kiti asks to go on his mission he can’t denied her. Knowing her more that she could guess, he also counts on this travel to court and win her. Thus he takes the time to meet with her to speak about her job on the mission but also to have meals with her. However, when Kiti start to answer too quickly to his advance he steps back not wanting to take advantage of her vulnerability and he gives her the time she need until she says that she really is ready for that step with him. I adore that. These times together are also a great way for the reader to learn more about Gregara, the world they will be on for the mission so we aren’t lost at all.

It’s a great sci-fi romance for those above 18 and for the ones who like hot romance, that’s even better. It could be read alone too since the book explains what it’s happening but still I would recommend you to read the complete trilogy in order.

                    Today i will give you my openion on two books or to be more precise, one book in the next post and here a novella published in the anthology Hotter on The Edge. So without waiting here is "To Buy a Wife" by K. C. Klein, part of the anthology of science-fiction romance  Hotter on the Edge

My opinion:

          K.C. Klein did really good with the universe’s idea. The novella is complete without being too long or too short and we immediately have a good idea of the world’s situation and politic. The rhythm is just adequate not too fast or too slow and we have a fair share of actions around the romance.

We discover all the background of Lake as it’s an important part of the plot and thus capital. Her psychology is also well done in link with this troubled past. She is stubborn and rebel because she longs for someone trustworthy and it’s rare in this world. Now I’m intrigued by Hudson, from what we gather his father wasn’t really good and her mother has suffered from him however she didn’t take it on her son and instead teach him how he should act with a woman. He is honourable and strong…he needs to take a wife to keep his lands and thus he has to buy her because that’s the law and women becoming rarer the accused are sold too. He is captivated when he sees Lake and he acts foolishly to save her.  What I would have like to know is how he received his combat training. He said he was too young to go to the war so that’s not where he learned, are the farmer all trained that way? Perhaps, it’s not important and I can live without the answers but I was wondering.

It’s a good read but I guess I’m not too fan of science fiction romance novella. I’ve read it quickly in once and I enjoyed it but it’s not something I want to reread.  For the fan of science fiction it’s a good addition to their list though but I don’t think it would recommend it at a new beginner immediately.  It’s an interesting step in the sub-genre but not a first one.
