Black Wings (Black Wings1) by Christina Henry

Short description from goodreads :

She's an Agent of Death who really needs to get a life.

As an Agent of Death, Madeline Black is responsible for escorting the souls of the dearly departed to the afterlife. It's a 24/7 job with a lousy benefits package.

Maddy's position may come with magical powers and an impressive wingspan, but it doesn't pay the bills. And then there are her infuriating boss, tenant woes, and a cranky, popcorn-loving gargoyle to contend with.

Things start looking up, though, when tall, dark, and handsome Gabriel Angeloscuro agrees to rent the empty apartment in Maddy's building. It's probably just a coincidence that as soon as he moves in demons appear on the front lawn. But when an unholy monster is unleashed upon the streets of Chicago, Maddy discovers powers she never knew she possessed. Powers linked to a family legacy of tarnished halos.

Powers that place her directly between the light of Heaven and the fires of Hell...

My opinion:
Black wings is the first book of the series named likewise by Christina Henri, it’s an interesting start but better to precise first that if you don’t like series with angels, religious/mythological elements this isn’t for you.  I’m not against books with this kind of topics but they aren’t my favourite either it really depends how it’s written and the universe in a whole.  I guess that with this book I’m still unsure where I stand.  I liked it but the Lucifer, hell’s rules etc, bothered me a little. It’s was well written and it could be a really promising start for the series  yes and I will read a little more  before really deciding if it’s a series for me a lot but at this time it was a little too overwhelming I guess.

Madeline is a strong willed heroine with some trouble to control her emotions, since she lived alone since she was 13 it’s a bit normal after all. She is also hard working… as an agent of death she must help the souls to reach the “Door” all the time, no holidays etc and since it’s a job you get by bloodline she had to take care of it since her mother was murdered…. I can’t imagine what it must have looked like as a child, no choice at all….just duty.. That being said I love that she is trying to get what she wants despite what her new found father dictate  however I was a bit disappointed by the event and loss she face at the ending of the book. So far I don’t see why it had to happen but since it’s only book 1 I can wait and see.

The romance is there, forbidden or decided by others but there ^^ and I love the fact that her boss is also in the equation ^^ so triangle or rectangle we will see how it goes because if we know quite a lot on Gabriel and on Nathaniel… JB is still quite a mystery and I do hope he will get his chance after all he is the safer choice so far
The action is not stop, the rhythm rapid and I liked to discover a bit of this universe, I want more of it so  I will if I have some answer in the future, if I adapt to this universe’s rules or if this series isn’t for me in the long run.

So if you are looking for demons, angels and agents of death all mixed with action and romance, this is a right book for you!

Score:  3,5/5

  2. I got burned out on angel books last year, so I've been taking a break from them. I like to keep tabs on them, though, because I know I'll be in the mood for one in the future.
