Short description from goodreads :

Three years ago, Sophie Mercer discovered that she was a witch. It's gotten her into a few scrapes. Her non-gifted mother has been as supportive as possible, consulting Sophie's estranged father--an elusive European warlock--only when necessary. But when Sophie attracts too much human attention for a prom-night spell gone horribly wrong, it's her dad who decides her punishment: exile to Hex Hall, an isolated reform school for wayward Prodigium, a.k.a. witches, faeries, and shapeshifters.
By the end of her first day among fellow freak-teens, Sophie has quite a scorecard: three powerful enemies who look like supermodels, a futile crush on a gorgeous warlock, a creepy tagalong ghost, and a new roommate who happens to be the most hated person and only vampire student on campus. Worse, Sophie soon learns that a mysterious predator has been attacking students, and her only friend is the number-one suspect.

As a series of blood-curdling mysteries starts to converge, Sophie prepares for the biggest threat of all: an ancient secret society determined to destroy all Prodigium, especially her.

My opinion:
It’s a good surprise…. I didn’t know what to expect because I’ve heard as much positive than negative opinion but I kept my mind open and I’m glad I took this books. It’s not something wholly original that’s true, there are parts really predicable too but it’s well written so you want to finish reading it. It’s an agreeable reads with some funny moments and others more mysterious.

Sophie is a kind girl who just want to be accepted and it’s while trying to aid another one that she reveals to be a witch…since it’s not the first incident either she is sentenced to attend Hecate Hall, or Hex Hall for the students, until her majority. There she discovers a world she never envisioned…with fairies, werewolves, ghosts and others witches and warlocks; even a vampire as her roommate. Since her mother is human who is separated from Sophie Father, a warlock; she only read a little about this universe but while she is hoping that perhaps she will finally be accepted the opposite happens. Sophie doesn’t know simple  spells, doesn’t know the difference between dark witch and white witch…worse she doesn’t know her father is a really important man responsible for sending them all to hex hall….either people don’t believe her, think she sucks or that she is a spy for her father… not funny , and there is this guy Archer… awesomely good looking, who sometimes seems friendly, sometimes laughs at her expenses but no matter if he is Elodie’s boyfriends , Sophie can’t resist to have a crush on him.

She also manages to makes enemies of the other few dark witches students by refusing to join their coven…her only friend is Jenna, the only vampire student who all blames for the death of a student the last year…. So when new accidents happen, each time involving lost of blood she is the prime suspect. For Sophie that’s too easy, even more after she learned that all “prodigium”, name of all paranormal creatures like them, are in fact hunted by three distinctive groups of humans. Also Jenna tells her that the first victims confided to her that the coven was trying to call a demon…. If Jenna isn’t the culprit then Sophie wants to find who it is alone if it what it takes…. I liked that she was so loyal, also I really loved that she wasn’t stuck in a mindset like other prodigium. She accept to think that perhaps there is a reason if they are hunted down, that perhaps some of them should  she doesn’t believe in a the whole humans against prodigium without exception. That she refused to join the coven make me love her more, even if she had sometimes doubts about Jenna.

The story is well done and I read it very easily, I liked that the differences between the species in the prodigium were explained too. Now a little thing, the attacks didn’t feel really mysterious or horrifying to me, I guess I was waiting for something more dramatic but perhaps it’s because those victims weren’t characters I appreciated.
I will be reading the rest of the trilogy soon I thing and I do hope the quality will stay the same
