Brazilian Surrender ( The Brazilians 3) by Carmen Falcone

Hello to all!

The year is not over yet so you may still get a few review in 2017 however i must admit that since i'm really behind in my handcrafted gift making ( supposed to be finished before christmas^^) this is my priority as long as my health allows it and  these days it's not cooperating so i'm posting this later that i wished.

Anyway i got the opportunity to try a new to me author Carmen Falcone for her latest release Brazilian Surrender and while it's part of a series you can definitively start by this one as it's a perfect stand alone.

Happy reading

 Description from goodreads :

Psychology student Camila Duarte is finally on her own, living in NYC and away from her overprotective brothers. Her serenity quakes when she receives terrorizing letters. When the threats ramp up, she hires the best problem solver in the business to protect her and look for the criminal.

After losing his wife and kid, Jaeger Bauer left the NYPD and has one simple rule: don’t get attached. A job is just a job. Working close to Camila, however, puts his remarkable self-control to the test. He wants to pursue her, even though they are complete opposites and want different things. As the stakes get higher, Jaeger needs to choose between protecting his client…or surrendering to desire and jeopardizing the entire mission.

My opinion:
This is my first story from this story and i must say that i hope it won't be the last because this book is part of a series -but can be read as standalone without any trouble at all- which i didn't know at first and now i would love to check the other books in it.

But  one thing at a time and now it start with Camila, she is a very kind and loyal  girl but she longs for anonymity and freedom so when she start receiving threats she chooses to find help outside her family and enter Jaeger who has his own security firm.... While Camila is very open and still naïve Jaeger is closed, still hurting from the deaths of his wife and son; he is very talented at what he does, very professional but his work is his own way to hide. So when he feels attraction for Camila at the first sight he hesitates before accepting her case but her innocence and persistence make it impossible to refuse.
When discovering that the threat is even more deadly he decides to even  take her home for her protection despite his attraction growing and his difficulty to hide it.

Camila is really resilient, we learn of her life before she had money and all what happened...still she always fought for what she believed in ( like studying despite dyslexia) and i found her admirable...this time too she will have to face a lot and she still will try to help Jaeger who isn't making things easy and will slowly open himself to her a bit.

The story is really steamy but i prefer not to explain why as it's kind of  part of the story in itself but i prefer to inform those who would prefer sweeter level. The investigation is well done, i appreciated that Jaeger had doubt  because of what happen it made it more believable but there were still some very dark and sad part ( hard not to cry a little for Torto)

All together it was really a good read and the fact it can be read as standalone is even better so if you are looking for a good steamy romance suspense i recommend you this one.

I do plan to read more before the end of the year so you will get more posts but for new i must tell you about a new release in a series i follow with a lot of pleasure: The Peacesmith series by Carly Hansen

so without waiting longer here is my point of view on Magic Aflame

Happy reading.

 Description from goodreads :

The third book in a gripping, action-packed fantasy series readers are describing as "enchanting" and "a breath of fresh air".

When Fenix's fellow gang member Twain sneaks away and gets trapped in a dilapidated building, she races off to rescue him.

But she's not the only one seeking her fallen colleague.

Enemies stewing with grudges against Alda and the gang are out to exploit Twain's misfortune.

On a collision course with powerful forces hell-bent on revenge, Fenix has to draw on both her emerging magical powers and her fighting skills if she's to stop their deadly schemes. But the price she has to pay is high and she finds she must decide how far she'll risk her own life to save a friend.

My opinion:

A series of quality....it's not always true that  series keep the same level of quality in the writing and in the content but so far with this one i haven't been disappointed at all; it still really well written and the suspense is still there making us want more...it's even slightly better i would say.

Fenix is maturing but not too quickly which is good seeing her age and the  time between each book, poor girl keeps having things throw at her and she sure adapts better that i would. She is conscious of her responsibilities but she is also able to ask for help when needed and i really loved that about her. More importantly she is very loyal.

i loved to see her ready to fight for what she believes in and at the same time preferring if other solutions were possible.  We learn a bit more about her powers in each book as she is discovering them or learning from Gaius however i would said that this time we do see her practice and  start believing in her powers more but we learn more about the villains for once....

Micha the vampire is still trying to be a good guy but he has some difficulties which kind of make me even more curious about what will happen. He does open more to Fénix as well - something which she still should do-

This time we are confronted to Alda big enemy who allied herself with Micha's so a war is brewing , lot of action and fight and in the middle of that  the same two police officers are trying to get a grip of what is happening ( for one at least the other is more on a revenge path) while completely blinded by their short views or misconceptions.

it's really a promising urban fantasy that i take pleasure reading and next book will be one i will look forward to.

Murder on the Sugarland Express ( Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries 6) by Angie Fox

Hello to all,

i still have a another title in this series to review but i couldn't want to share this new release with you as it's my favourite so far..... because yes the series is only becoming better and better....so i won't be long as typing is painful....

Happy Reading!
Publisher: Moose Island Books
Publication: 2017

Genre: paranormal cozy mystery

Description from goodreads :

Verity Long is overdue for a little R&R (rest and romance) with her boyfriend Ellis, and a vintage train trip through the Tennessee mountains seems like just the ticket. The Sugarland Express carries history and nostalgia in every compartment, and Verity is determined to enjoy it—without ghostly interference. But the ghosts have other plans…

On a dark, desolate night nearly a century ago, the train was stranded in the mountains and a young woman was found stabbed to death in her locked compartment. The murder was never solved, and a ghostly Belgian detective is still pursuing the case from the grave.

To Verity’s dismay, all of the ghostly suspects are back. And when history repeats itself and a new murder mirrors the old, it’s up to Verity and her friends to discover which of the passengers—dead or alive—could be behind the murders before the killer strikes again.

My opinion:

Captivating! This instalment is perhaps the best so far, good intrigue with several twists, action, suspense, tension and a good dose of humour  simply perfect!!!

This is one of my favourite series and i love the fact i can still be surprised! Verity is really a good character and so loyal and kind hearted now she doesn't always listen to reason but we love her for that. This time all happen on a train journey which mean a specific place, limited suspects and still  a very complicated investigation as Verity must solve a murder in both time period 1929 and now....with the help of her boyfriends Ellis and her ghost Frankie who would prefer to woo his own girlfriend Molly......but Molly isn't that different from Verity so dear gangster is stuck playing good cop as to avoid the ghost detective on the case ( a Belgian one!^^) and impress Molly.

Really all is there,  the little allusion to Agatha Christie is wonderful ( i mean really when you hear "Belgian detective" you can only think of one); the characters are so well though as we discover new side of one we already know and some new one are easy to doubt, hate or love be it living ones or ghostly ones.

I don't want to reveal too much but let say that Ellis and Verity's plan to have a little vacation away from  everyone doesn't go as planned at all, Frankie is a lot more powerful as our heroine stay linked to the other side the majority of the trip and...Virginia still isn't on my "like" list but she sure can be pragmatic when needed.

I do recommend you to read the series in order though but  you won't regret it and i can't wait for book 7!

The Haunted Heist ( The Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries 3) by Angie Fox

Hello to all!

My health got a turn to the worse, nothing dire but a bit incapacitating so reading wasn't easy and the mood wasn't into it either as well but  i'm starting to find way around it and with a new release ultra soon in one of my favourite series i couldn't resist and jumped on the occasion to review it .....but for that one you still need to wait a few day so while you wait i will give you my opinion on a precedent book in the same series

Happy reading!!!

Description from goodreads :

Just because she can see the dead doesn’t mean Verity Long wants to spend her days hunting ghosts. Instead, she’s over the moon to land a marketing job at the local bank…until she finds her new boss dead in the vault. Even her ghost friend, Frankie, knows that's no way to start a career.

Relieved to let the police take charge, Verity steps aside, bound and determined to keep her ghost sightings to herself. But when she learns the main suspect in the murder is a very crooked, very dead mobster, Verity knows it's up to her to solve the case.

She teams up with her ghostly gangster buddy Frankie, as well as the irresistible and charming Ellis, as the three of them search haunted mob hideouts, hidden passageways, and historic cemeteries for the facts behind the heist of the century—and a modern-day motive for murder.

Too bad uncovering the truth could very well make Verity the next victim...

My opinion:
Verity isn't lucky as soon as she get a new job proposal...a death comes to destroy her dream...that aside she is lucky to Have Lucy, Frankie and of course Ellis to help her uncovering the suspect.

I really love this series and we did get to see a new side of Frankie...he may want to seem like the big bad boy but he sure has an heart and does look out for his friend. Verity too is really loyal and we can have proof of that on multiple occasion in this adventure.
Adventures on the other side are full of actions and those leave us very few moment to rest but  at the same time we just want more. However it also leads to more questions: why Frankie powers are acting up for example.

Ellis' mother is still a bitch ( sorry no other words can be strong enough, you will see if you read this series she is too easy to hate) but there are other characters i wanted to slap or strangle.....

There is a lot of action, humour but also touching moments in this new instalment so i easily read it in one sitting and just want the next one. A series to continue

Don of the Dead ( Pepper Martin 1) by Casey Daniels

Hello to all,

i hadn't planned to be silent so long but my health had other ideas and it prevented me to read like i wanted. I'm not healed yet but at least one of the trouble is under control so i had to read a book that was waiting on my night table tempting me.

If you followed me this year you may have seen that i sure read a lot of cozy mystery especially some with ghosts ( Tonya kappes series, Angie fox ones etc) ....while the main center idea is quite similar (a girl solves mysteries for ghosts with their help sometimes) each has a specifity sometimes it's the light humour, the reccurrence of some ghosts, the emotionnal side etc..so when a friend recommended this book "Don of the Dead" i was curious to see which variation it would be and i'm not disappointed ...it's darker than teh other but still with humour and i do plan to see if it's continue like that in the rest of the serie

so without delay here is my opinion on Don of the Dead by Casey Daniels

Happy reading

Short description from goodreads :

 She sees dead people

Beautiful, smart, and chic, Pepper Martin never had to work a day in her life -- until her surgeon daddy was convicted of fraud, her wealthy fiancé took a powder, and the family fortune ran bone dry.

Suddenly desperate, the inexperienced ex-rich girl was forced to take the only job she could get: as a tour guide in a cemetery. But a grave situation took a turn for the worse when a head-on collision with a headstone left her with an unwanted ability to communicate with the disgruntled deceased . . . and now Pepper has a whacked Mafia don demanding that she hunt down his killers -- and threatening to haunt her until she does.

My opinion:
Very pleasing, now the idea of a woman seeing ghosts and solving mysteries isn't new but i loved the twist and humour in this one. Pepper is an heroine i could come to like a lot....she is persistent, she doesn't give up despite what life threw at her that i really loved what i loved a little less was her willingness to sleep with all the cute guys she come across ( fortunately a certain don made sure it didn't happen)... it's not that i want her to be prude but i prefer real relationship so i do hope she will mature a bit in that domain.

That aside so far from all the book of the genre i've read she is the only one who get something from her ghost client ^^;; i found that amusing especially how he made her react after. Gus may be her " client" and pester her from time to time but deep down he care and he watches over her. i really loved that because in this story they kind of "give" to each other...She helping him find peace he is making her live for herself, see what she is capable of and protect her the best he can ( teaching her the ropes of being a mafia boss^^)....i loved that because from the time he was alive he would probably have been a bit like that too....because he sure needed to seem stern and all for his associated etc but he still cared about his men and their family and had values.

The investigation was well done ( even if i guessed a bit too early to my taste the who and why)it was funny to see Pepper learn how to do that and there are still a few mystery ( like who Dan is really) and it balanced well between the darker moment and the humour ( quite dark at time)

Really it was a pleasing read and i'm happy to have book 2 ready to see if Pepper grows on me. If you want a paranormal cozy mystery a bit darker this is the perfect one.

Nowhere to Run by Jeanne Bannon

Hello to all,

I'm in the middle of administrative stuff but i had to share with you my opinion on my latest read so i'm taking a break to post this...i won't be long because i don't want to reveal too much of the intrigue though.

Description from goodreads :

What's a girl to do when she falls in love with the man whose mission it is to bring her down?

With the murder of her only sister, Sara, just a few months past, Lily Valier—a woman of beauty and substance—tops the sheriff's list of suspects in small town Maine, and for a very good reason. Dear old Dad had willed his fortune to Sara and only Sara, leaving Lily to fend for herself. However, with no murder weapon or witnesses, the evidence against Lily is only circumstantial.

Enter P.I. Aiden O'Rourke, black-haired and blue-eyed, charged with gaining Lily's trust and learning her secrets, all to finally get the goods on her. Things move fast and feelings run deep, yet when Lily discovers the truth about Aiden, everything begins to come apart.

Aiden's torn. Despite his feelings for her, Lily is the most logical suspect, with a great big fat motive. Except something's not quite right. Aiden trusts his instincts and they're screaming at him to have a look at a former suspect with far more to hide than first appeared. With little left to lose, Lily decides to stand her ground, and staying put has its consequences when the murder weapon finally turns up—and it’s Lily's gun.

What happens to love, when trust is betrayed?

My opinion:
Easily read, this book was quite pleasing... i loved the idea of the plot ( sister suspected of a murder) and the investigation is quite well written....in fact the only thing that bothered me was how fast the heroine falls for the hero Aiden.  Lily is courageous, she is loyal and stronger than she looks both mentally and physically more importantly she has a big heart as we can see in how she care for older peoples....however she is also a bit secret after have been hurt she is reserved even more after the sheriff investigation....so i can understand how she would fall for Aiden ( especially after the heroic rescue) BUT... in my opinion she goes to his bed too fast ..she doesn't fully trust him and yet she sleeps with him...somehow that fell too wrong

However, when you go past that point the author does use some elements to make the characters speak to each others and in the process learning to really discover the other one and  build trust...

What really moved me was the ending... really this couldn't have been a more perfect one for this story  and i couldn't resist shedding tears as it was quite moving really so i would be very happy to read more story from this author if only for that part .

If you want a good romance suspense with some mystical element and moving ending.. this is a book not to miss.

Untamed: A zodiac Shifters Paranormal romance: Leo by Decadent Kane

Hello to all!!

I'm sure getting a little difficulties to keep track of all i have to do this month but one step at a time and not matter how long the list seems it will be completed.
First i'm still trying to cover what i got late reviewing because sick last month so today is a my opinion on Untamed by Decadent Kane...a  novella that fit in teh kindle world of the zodiac shifters

Happy reading

Publication: 2017
Genre: paranormal romance
Violence: strong

Language: normal
sex: strong
Public: 18+
Source: earc

Description from goodreads :

Split into beasts of all kinds and forced to shift into humans, Khimairans were graced with humanity by the gods and Dante's humanity was fleeting.

Dante Coburn is running out of time.

He's the leader of the Khimairan shifters and that won't save him from turning primal. Once his beast takes over…there's no coming back. Unless he can find his mate before he turns, killing everyone he holds dear. When Bailey walks into his life, he thought he'd found everything he needed as his Leo zodiac mark was invoked. However, she wants nothing to do with Khimairan shifters and knows nothing of her real heritage.

Bailey couldn't imagine living in a city where Khimairans dominated. The dirty shifters could piss off... the lot of them. They killed her mother, her aunt, and she'd be damned if she had to live near them. When Bailey inherits more than a store from her aunt, which included the intensely seductive Dante Coburn, Bailey will have to face more than her desires to stay sane.

After a group of fanatics show up, Dante will risk his immortal life to keep her safe, even if she'll never have him.

My opinion:
Khimairans are shifters destined to be lost to their animal side if they can't find their true mate... but aside from that pressure they also must be careful because hunted for their powers by a faction who spread words that they are savage beasts and must be annihilated.

Bailey has been indoctrinated by her father to believe that they are beasts responsible for her mother's death...she is very set to avoid Khimairans and to stay on the road so when she learns she has inherited her aunt shop she is not sure what to make of that especially in a city full of those she see as the enemy. She sure doesn't have an open mind and while i understand the "how" and "why" she did get on my nerves at first. However when it's needed she is courageous and very determined she grew on me.

Dante is a good alpha, courageous, loyal and a fierce warrior. A lion is his favourite form and it fits him well.

It's a universe new to me but the description made it captivating and this story seemed too short when finished as it was really good...it's dark, there are a lot of violence but some humour ( very light)- i loved the little dragon Smokey- and the romance is well done

This is a good instalment in the Zodiacs Shifters series

Score:  3,5/5

Bear's Shadow ( Vendetta series 2) by Desiree L Scott

Hello to all,

so while i struggle with facebook mess ( really i would never have thought them to be so uncompetent!) i'm not forgetting that i do have some reviews to share with you so... here comes my opinion on Bear's Shadow second book in the Vendetta series that was released last week.

Happy reading!

Description from goodreads :

Nikki Calhoun is on the run, fueled by terror of the shadowy world she had married into. Desperate to survive and nowhere to hide, Nikki turns to the wolf shifter pack of her childhood but it’s hard for her to trust anyone, even the people closest to her.

Enforcer and bear-shifter Bret Axel receives a call from his cousin who manages his Portland nightclub about suspicious activity. After obtaining the approval of his Alpha, he travels to Portland. Two nights later, screams of a woman shatter the silence of the dock and with the help of his cousin, they save her from being killed.

A twisted tale of hunter and prey, two worlds collide as Bret falls for the human and then struggles to convince her that they are meant to be together. It’s up to him and the Crescent Ice Pack to get to the bottom of the brutal acts of one man. Will Nikki survive the wrath of her estranged husband or will the murky world of Edward Calhoun destroy her and any who try to help?

My opinion:
This was a very good second instalment, after a good book 1 i'm always a bit afraid in case book 2 wouldn't be as good but it's not the case at all. I loved  it even if it's not a favourite of me.
This story is a lot darker and violent, more than Crescent vendetta which wasn't light either....Nikki has suffered a lot and is terrified...not without reason but thankfully for her she still has friends...shifters friends and Samantha is determined to help  even if it means calling all the pack. I loved the fact she didn't simply got over it..after years of suffering like that it makes sense that she needs time to trust again.

Bret was a perfect gentleman, i loved to see how protective he is even if it's not his mate ( but with his mate he is even worse) he is giving her as much time and freedom as he can while keeping her safe and that's not easy when you are a bear. Also i appreciated that he didn't hesitate to ask for help.

We get to learn more about the crescent pack ( very open minded pack) and we find characters discovered in the first book with joy but this could be read as a stand alone too as we do get info from what happened in the past but this book focus more on Bret and Nikki so it would work well even if reading book 1 first give a deeper insights on the reactions the pack has. And we get a bit more info on Jackson!!!( i really want to discover more about him)

The action is fast paced and ambiance is dark, there are touch of humour and Nikki and Bret relationship is building step by step....However i felt like some element didn't ring true or were missing... i didn't understand why those saved were not returned to their family ( if not say they are orphan, alone or anything).. oki it could be protective measures but why not write it then...then... i didn't feel like the pack was pursuing things like they should...after book 1 when drug was used they are not attempting to find where it was produced to make sure none is left....also for shifters they are a bit too easy to kill ( i mean if important in the pack hierarchy they should be stronger than that in comparison to mere human even if they have a twisted mind)... characters can die of course i don't like it but when it make sense it's okay in this version... it didn't felt right at all....

Also Nikki's husband, the big evil man doesn't know what the pack is even after having them under surveillance....sound even stranger.....

That being said i still liked this story a lot and i would continue the series with pleasure so if you are looking for a dark paranormal romance with bear shifter but more kind of shifters in the series this is the right one for you

Score:  3,5/5

Crescent Vendetta (Vendetta series 1) by Desiree L Scott

Hello to all,

While i'm still trying to get back to track in all i have to , i still need to rest so it's slower than i had hoped but at least the books are good^^ so i'm motivated.

Today i'm sharing with you my opinion on "Crescent Vendetta, first book in this series and if all goes well  you will have my opinion on book 2 in a few days as it will release soon. Let's start with the beginning though!

Happy Reading!

Description from goodreads :

Wolf-shifter Vanessa Burns has survived a life of brutality and neglect. Being kidnapped, drugged, and forced into an underground fighting right is just the beginning of one man’s sick and twisted obsession.

Travis Kameron, the Alpha of the Crescent Ice Pack, suffering a similar fate; wakes up to find that his life is about to be irreparable changed by the fierce she-wolf in the next cage. Can they put aside old rivalries and the past and work together to not only survive and escape but to weather the storm of complications, revenge, and betrayals waiting for them on the outside?

My opinion:
I really liked this book despite some shifters not being as i love them.. i love how loyal wolves can be and for sure some were purely evil but the fact it was against other shifters too made it more real, natural... strange i know. But what i loved above the rest was how patient Travis was, a real  alpha protective but not too demanding...with what the characters went through and Vanessa  even more it wouldn't have seemed logical if they fell immediately in the other's arms... no there is some attraction yes but they need to learn about each other, built trust and i really loved how the author was setting the timeframe to allow that.

I also loved some secondary character like Samantha ( but her story is book 3 only) who is still a secret for us, Or Jackson also very mysterious that doctor.

There are a lot of death of violence, mention of rape etc but the story is fluid and you get attached to the character and their persistence, you want them to succeed and you get suck in the story by the writing style easily.... i can't wait to start on book 2.

Really a good book with shifters.

Score:  4/5

Unspeakable ( Beyond Human 2) by Nina Croft

Hello to all,

I'm really sorry for being so quiet lately but i got sick and it was more serious than i first thought so during 3weeks i couldn't read or do anything i was down with the fever and pain, it's not finished yet but at least my mind is clearer. However because of that i'm late to review some books so thank  for the authors' understanding and i will do my best to read and review as quickly as possible to get back on track... that's my priority.

So i'm starting with Unspeakable the second book in the Beyond Human series.... if you remember i loved book 1 so when i was offered the opportunity to read and review book 2 i was jumping with joy.... i'm not disappointed at all! Nina Croft sure did wonders but let see that in detail.

Description from goodreads :

Sadie Brooks grew up knowing she was different…special. And she thought the undercover work she did for the government was making a difference...making a better world. Then she discovered she was simply an asset—to be used or destroyed at whim.
Escaping her government controllers, Sadie is determined to get her revenge on the organization responsible for the death of her twin sister—the Conclave.

Ethan Weiland has doubts about the Conclave but he’s never known anything else.
Brought up from birth as the next hereditary leader, Ethan has never questioned his
destiny. Until he comes face to face with a beautiful enemy who can read his mind and
bring him to his knees with a thought. For the first time, Ethan sees a chance for redemption. When he’s in charge, he’ll be able to change things.

Too bad it won’t be that simple...

My opinion:
Let's start with some advice. If the little recap at the beginning of this second book  is quite useful and could help someone new to the series to feel less lost i do recommend to start with book 1 Unthinkable as this universe is really rich and every element can be important later so better not to miss anything.

Now that this precaution is done  i must say that i was more than happily surprised... book 1 was fantastic and i loved it, this one is as good or even better it's captivating and intriguing... it's the kind of book you must read in one sitting simply because you can't put it done.  the idea is original and it's a strange but excellent mix between paranormal romance and sciences fiction  with that second genre a bit more present in this instalment. Really it's a series that once started you want to finish but that will require some patience as it's not written yet.

Keeping the quality in a series when  book 1 was great is not easy but Nina Croft sure manages it at the perfection. We do get enough recaps to  fall back into the new instalment without trouble and at the same time we just have enough to keep us on the edge of our seat ready to jump on any new info to try to learn more about all the mysteries involved.

I really loved Ethan, despite being conclave he is deep down a good guy and his loyalty to his friend makes him even more adorable... he is perfect for Sadie, they have so much in common that it can be funny because despite this deep connection  they still tiptoe around each other for a long moment....i loved that because both character with their past  need time to accept what is happening and fully trust the other it's perfectly natural.
The link between Sadie and the dog Max is absolutely cute too and seen we see the others member of the tribe i hope that we will see him again in the rest of the series as well.

Sadie is a bit of a wild element in the tribe, she is so full of anger that she has difficulties to follow orders ( not as much as Kaithlin but still) and that leads her  into danger a bit too often fortunately Jake knows her well and thus is ready to protect her when it's needed while giving her as much as freedom as it's possible - yes really Jake is the perfect Alpha- When Sadie sees a man in her dreams at first she doesn't over think it and simply enjoy those dreams but when she sees him in real, she has to investigate...while keeping the real reason secret.

I really loved the story it was perfectly balanced between the investigation, action, romance, new elements...secondary characters are so funny and interesting. i really loved the poor Fergus so loyal and so protective of Ethan but also liking Sadie without showing it. We do learn a lot in this book but Kane mission is still a mystery and we end up with more question than answers but fortunately the good guys are winning some battle.... now will Kane manage to get his soul mate^^ we will see in the future  but i already imagine his pain as his hands will be full .. that with his mind a little narrow when it comes to his mission it could be funny to watch.

So this really a series to discover ( but in order) and i recommend it  without hesitation while i can't wait for book 3.

Description from goodreads :

Southerners keep their secrets swept under the rug, but what happens when that rug goes up for sale?

Bestselling author Berlye Stone, the most famous citizen to ever come out of Cottonwood, Kentucky, has died and put all her worldly possessions up for auction, but not without leaving one more manuscript behind. A hidden tell-all about Cottonwood that’s got more gossip than a ladies’ luncheon.

When Beryle’s assistant turns up with an ax in her back and the only witness is in a coma, Sheriff Kenni Lowry reckons someone in town will do anything to keep the manuscript from seeing the light of day. Her poppa’s ghost returns to help piece together the life of the Beryle he once knew, but his memory’s a little foggy, and any misstep could cause them a world of trouble. With the help of Deputy Finn Vincent, can Kenni sort through the secrets buried in Beryle’s books, or will this be her final chapter?

My opinion:
I loved it! Tonya Kappes sure can give us a wonderful setting (Cottonwoods) and a feeling of the south atmosphere and it's a big part of what i like in the cozy mystery with that area setting even if i'm glad no to live there at the same time.  In this instalment  the mystery was very deep and it's funny to see so many people wanting to keep their secrets buried, and doing so much for that, especially  when some  are quite innocent...then in a town where you can't do a thing without everybody knowing it in minutes it's already a mystery that some secrets exist.

The intrigue was very well done and captivating, now i must say that i'm very curious about the consequences too but before thinking on book 4 let 's speak about number 3. Really the plot was great but also the characters interactions, seeing how the town can split for an election and how Kenni can be a furious woman when she feel betrayed was really fun, now i'm suspicious of Jenni and i still dislike Lonnie but i've discovered new character like Hattie who is moving, Kenni's mother is still on war path too  and all that mixes wonderfully under Tonya writing and deliver a story we want more of.

The pace is just perfect to keep us hooked  alternating between investigation, mystery and humour  and it's just  great!

i do recommend this series if you love southern mysteries and well written cozy ones.

Description from goodreads :

From New York Times bestseller Angie Fox, the second book in the new Southern Ghost Hunter mysteries

A haunted library is no place for a girl who can see ghosts, but when Verity Long stumbles on a dead body in the middle of the main reading room, she has to believe someone…even a dead someone…must have witnessed the crime.

Her ghostly sidekick Frankie warns her to stay out of it. The very alive, very handsome deputy sheriff, Ellis Wydell, inadvertently places her directly in the middle of it. And her ex-fiancé, Ellis’s brother, is back with an agenda of his own.

Undaunted, Verity presses forward, uncovering scandalous secrets, long-forgotten ghosts, and a shocking trail of clues that places her directly in the path of a killer.

My opinion:
I'm loving this series more with each book; it's quite addictive. Verity is attempting to go back to a normal life at least as normal as it can be with a ghost as a guest in her house.
It's time for a big celebration in the city to celebrate a big battle that took place long ago, however when a corpse is found, by Verity, the mood isn't good to party. With a sheriff determined to have her as a suspect, Verity can't refuse Ellis plaid for help when he come asking for her to see if she can get a word with some spirits that could have seen something.

Not that Frankie is that happy to help but when she is determined, she gets her way...not that it easy when the library was at a time a military hospital so lot of ghosts not all of them friendly but mostly alone and forgotten. However not is like it looks like and Matthew is simply the perfect gentleman, i really loved him and he sure is quiet powerful but also knows a lot more than Frankie about the ghosts' plane  so i really hope to see more of him ( and he is a book lover is that wasn't enough reason to love him ). We see some other ghosts from book 1 but i don't want to spoil the surprise just know it will be extra sweet.

Then on the living we sadly see Beau ( who still doesn't get what he deserves, and his mother's that has it too easy even if she does suffer a little ( really not enough!) those are too easy to dislike or even hate...i prefer ghost over them.

The investigation is well done and the secrets well thoughts and found, when pride become more important than history
things are bond to happen.

I can't tell more without a lot of spilers but really it's a series to discover if you haven't done so already

Description from goodreads :

In Croswald, the only thing more powerful than dark magic is one secret...

For sixteen years Ivy Lovely has been hidden behind an enchanted boundary that separates the mundane from the magical. When Ivy crosses the border, her powers awaken. Curiosity leads her crashing through a series of adventures at the Halls of Ivy, a school where students learn to master their magical blood and the power of Croswald’s mysterious gems. When Ivy’s magic—and her life—is threatened by the Dark Queen, she scrambles to unearth her history and save Croswald before the truth is swept away forever.

My opinion:
A magical, mysterious universe that, at some points, can remind us of Harry Potter for its enchantments. That's the first thing that came to me when i was reading it's not the same and in this book so far the majority of the main characters and big secondary one are females. But we also have someone discovering the Magic that she knew existed though, an head of school we are not 100% trusting and  ghosts in the school as well as magical portrait..... if you have read Harry Potter those are elements that ring a bell.

That being said it was really a pleasure to discover this universe along Ivy and there is a lot we sill have to learn i'm sure. Ivy is a loving character, she is determined, loyal, has a good heart and is quite courageous. She does what she feels is right and that can lead her to dangerous situation but she is also apt to make good friends in unlikely place. For example, she saved a dragon.... i must said that "dragon oven" had me smiling but Humboldt is really funny and i'm sure he will have a role to play later and a dragon as a pet is always fun. She is also friend with a dwarf and from what i gathered in that universe it's really uncommon as they have a bad reputation.. At school she has friends, allies and enemies ( really i can't stand Damaris) because the school has two sections: for the noble  who get their magic from their crown, and  another : the scrivenist  who learn magic that is inside them. They are taught together but of course some think themselves superior when they are in fact complementary.

Ivy always had dreams about a castle and someone there that she feel is calling to her....Determined to free him when she learns he  is someone forgotten by magic , a curse that doesn't affect her, she is jumping from an adventure to another all while trying to fit in and learn which isn't that easy.

I don't want to reveal too much as there are some twists and some secrets we only got partial answers to but it's definitively a great story. I would appeal to younger ones as well as older ones that long for more magical universe well written. It has action, just a touch of romance, intrigue, mystery and humour. If you loved Harry Potter and want more it will be a good discovery if you haven't read it you will discover a fantastic universe to be introduced to. I recommend it with lot of pleasure and can't wait for the next instalment hoping the quality will continue to be that good.( A glossary would be very helpful in the future.)
