Shapeshifted ( Edie Spence 3) by Cassie Alexander

Hi!

Slowly things are getting back to normal but the last weeks put my body under heavy pressure and now i must face the consequences still i wouldn't change it since my dog keeps improving.

Today i wanted to share with you my opinion on the 3rd book in the Edie Spence series because Cassie Alexander does write and release books quite rapidly so i'm way, way behind already^^; ( at least we don't have to wait 1 year between each book^^)

Happy Reading

Short description from goodreads :

Nurse Edie Spence is once again called upon to save a life…and this time, it’s personal. Can her new community of zombies, vampires, and shapeshifters come to her rescue when she needs them most?

When Edie was fired from her paranormal nursing job at County Hospital, her whole world came crashing down. Now she’s is once again shaken to her core. Her mother is deathly ill and there’s only one thing that will save her: vampire blood. But with the paranormal community shunning Edie, where can she obtain it…without losing her own life in the process?

SHAPESHIFTED

Edie hopes to procure it at her new job at the clinic across town, where the forces of evil loom large. Vampire gang wars are rampant. Old underground enemies are rising to the surface. And Edie’s zombie ex-boyfriend has arrived at the scene—but is he the same man he used to be? And what should she make of the enigmatic doctor with whom she shares an unexpected connection? She’ll have to figure it out soon, because all hell is about to break loose—literally—and time is running out…

My opinion:
I’m definitively warming at this series,  it’s even better than that I Loved this book!. Edie is maturing, she is starting to see what is the most important without loosing herself..i could only appreciate her this time. She is suffering from her shunning and then worse she learn her mother is dying from cancer….i know first hand how for a child to learn one parent is dying is something terrifying…we don’t know how to imagine ourselves without our parents, we rely on them even if only emotionally and then we learn it won’t last….we are never prepared for that and I guess it’s harder for Edie because as a nurse she knows how it will happen…. It’s even clearer for her... thus the feeling of unfairness, the want to do something to help even if she can’t.

To be honest I loved the fact she could think more about it at first she doesn’t doubt her decision, vampires blood can cure her so she need it.. but after a moment she also see the consequences….and understand how selfish it can be….. forcing her mother into servitude isn’t a life… she would breathe but in which condition? Which state? I must say I was glad Dren kept his promise even if he made him sound as a jerk because really he was acting to keep his promise not to hurt. Edie needed to be told the truth even if it something she didn’t want to hear.

Also Edie is more stable…she isn’t sleeping around she can have lovers yes but she think about it now and I prefer responsible heroine.I thought that working in that hospital/ clinic was really a good thing for her, it has the stress from the job but in a positive way…. No contract on her head like before, in a way her soul is free. For the first time she think about her and it’s not easy so it’s a good thing in her case. Oki I was a little surprised she couldn’t believe in Olympio’s don at first, I mean after everything she had see she should be more open minded but I was funny and I loved the little phrases in Spanish…. I’m learning it so it was an interesting exercise. … I could imagine her opening a special clinic , even for supernatural, too without including shadows for example because after all…they do come to ask her help.

The plot was really well done and Cassie kept us on our toes, we could guess parts yes, predict some but at the end we were still surprised at how she created things. I definitively wants more and I do hope Edie won’t go back to her bad attitude, enter in the shadows powers or something like that. I loved to see more of Ti, Asher and yes even Jorgen….. I must say I’m really curious about what Anna will do after all she was shunned when Jorgen , at Dren’s order, came to her.. will that means Dren will have to pay?  I do hope he will be the one punished because Jorgen acted bad but he is paying a high price for his stupidity already.

It’s really becoming a series I enjoy more and more so I can only hope it will continue to be that way. If you love urban fantasy mixed with medical…..this is a series for you. (I do wonder if nurses, all, steal as much as edie^^;;)

Moonshifted (Edie Spence 2) by Cassie Alexander

Happy Sunday to all,

this week has been really busy for me and sadly it meant also less reading reading time but i did enjoy what i read so i'm happy. I'm planning to try to put some order in my books today to prepare my piles for the next months challenges but it will be done step by step i think^^.

So today i'm sharing with you my opinion on the second book in the Edie Spence series by Cassie Alexander, it's not my favourite series but one i come to enjoy more and more after each book.

Happy Reading!

Short description from goodreads :

After surviving a brutal vampire attack, Nurse Edie Spence is ready to get back to work—attending to supernatural creatures in need of medical help. But her nursing skills are put to the test when she witnesses a hit-and-run on her lunch break. The injured pedestrian is not only a werewolf, he’s the pack leader. And now Edie’s stuck in the middle of an all-out were-war…

With two rival packs fighting tooth and nail, Edie has no intention of crossing enemy lines. But when she meets her patient’s nephew—a tattooed werewolf named Lucas with a predatory gleam in his eye that’s hard to resist—Edie can’t help but choose sides. The question is: can she trust this dangerous new ally? And can she trust her own instincts when she’s near him? Either way, Edie can’t seem to pull away—even if getting involved makes her easy prey…

My opinion:
To start with the positive, i greatly enjoyed the plot in this book, the fact the werewolves were predominant could help ^^ but i enjoyed it and getting Bear-weres was more than interesting. Thanks to Gina and Lucas we learn more about how weres are mad, how it can be transmitted in this universe. So after focusing on vampires in book1 now it’s on were, going progressively is a good idea in my opinion since there is a lot to learn and like Edie we get it slowly.

I also really enjoyed finding Asher back, still the same. He is really a good back up for Edie and I would love if she was more grateful to him. She is interested partly but she fears him and not being sure which appearance is real is disturbing for her… I can get that but only to a point. I mean he is oki when she needs help but she has difficulties to consider him as a friend…and when she does she still has reservations, not fair.
Anna was also a character I was pleased to see even more that she is perfectly coherent with how she was described in Nightshifted. In book 1 I has a small preference for grand father , and he didn’t disappoint me in this one except for a detail… i admit the mixing with Gideon  was surprising and it’s still surprising but i thought he was there for Edie, now he is with Anna since Gideon is part of her house…. Edie get left behind so i wonder where his loyalty lies and I’m a little afraid.

The rhythm is not too fast even if we do get lot information at the same time, the action is fast paced and Edie takes time to start thinking about consequences and everything that’s happening around her… but she is still strong willed and quite selfless, trying to help everyone. Oh and we get to see the superior of the shadows and i loved that part…

So after so many positive elements why not an higher score? I’m fed up with Edie’s love life if we can call it that. I mean in book one she has a one night stand with a shapeshifter the she is in a relationship with a zombie… so far i can accept but then because the said zombie left she jump on a were and nearly try to start again with Asher….and when she does she is crying after. Oki she is a grown adult woman, yes she can have needs but a new supernatural creature each time? Worse: one that could start a change and she won’t be human… yes she doesn’t know all the specifics since she was interrupted in her chat with Gina but still she is a nurse so she should know better and sleeping around isn’t something  i agree with so her behaviour on that part didn’t sit well with me at  all.

So if you want a good urban fantasy, different creatures, some steamy scenes a great plot and don’t mind an heroine like Edie, this book is a more than enjoyable reads.

Nightshifted ( Edie Spence 1) by Cassie Alexander

Hello to all,

The sun distracted me so much that i forgot to post this earlier in the week buit i miss i don't regret it, i needed to enjoy it a little and i did well because he has already disappeared again.

Now, though, it's time to share my opinion on a new title with you and June's topic is zombie... to be honest i don't think i have a lot of books with zombies, i'm not reallly fan of horror after all but in some urban fantasy they are zombie in a form or another so i can at least share that with you.  And his first book qualifies too so it was a good motivations until i get in the mood some some of potential titles from my shelves so here comes Nightshifted by Cassie Alexander

Happy Reading

Short description from goodreads :

From debut author Cassie Alexander comes a spectacular new urban fantasy series where working the nightshift can be a real nightmare. Nothing compares to being Nightshifted.

Nursing school prepared Edie Spence for a lot of things. Burn victims? No problem. Severed limbs? Piece of cake. Vampires? No way in hell. But as the newest nurse on Y4, the secret ward hidden in the bowels of County Hospital, Edie has her hands full with every paranormal patient you can imagine—from vamps and were-things to zombies and beyond…

Edie’s just trying to learn the ropes so she can get through her latest shift unscathed.  But when a vampire servant turns to dust under her watch, all hell breaks loose. Now she’s haunted by the man’s dying words—Save Anna—and before she knows it, she’s on a mission to rescue some poor girl from the undead. Which involves crashing a vampire den, falling for a zombie, and fighting for her soul. Grey’s Anatomy was never like this…

My opinion:
I was intrigued by the summary of this book and I haven’t been disappointed but I still have a lot of questions too....
To start with the premise, I really enjoyed it; I mean a special hospital for paranormal creatures with human nurses even that’s a great change. After all, often the vampires, werewolves etc are described like nearly invulnerable like all what they could be suffering from are the repercussions of fight and still in the majority of case they heal alone. Here that’s different, yes there are injuries resulting from fights but also “simple” illnesses. All species have their specificities, weaknesses etc but they need medical help from time to time. Like the dragon suffering from syphilis^^;;  that’s really the first time I come across a dragon sick like that in a book and it was a fresh change.

I also loved that the story was only about one kind of creatures, it’s not a hospital for vampires… they are vampires yes, the main plot is linking to vampires yes but we learn about others species too and those species are supporting the story in their own way. So we learn about werewolves, so far they seem to be quite common to the rest of werewolves I’ve read ( save the fact they can be sick etc),weres, dragon, shapeshifters( those doesn’t change into animal but into human they got a skin to skin contact with), zombie and perhaps ghosts or some kind of demons but on those we are still a little unsure. The author doesn’t name them really just made them act so we get the result only and a little description sometimes^^… the mystery stays.

The plot it itself was good but I would have loved to get more for example, in the apartment there were several files: the ones already saved, Anna’s but also other.. I’m surprised Edie didn’t take them to try to save them too , even later.  Yes she was under the risk to be killed etc but the first time she went to the apartment, she didn’t know about the vampires etc so I’m surprised she let everything there.  Perhaps we will learn more in the other books of the series we will see.

Edie is an interesting and believable character. I can relate to her relationship with her brother ( no mine isn’t into drug but since young I was a little responsible of him and it’s something not easy to let go)… he is destroying her slowly by slowly and he isn’t conscious of it. He is so self-centred I wanted to punch him, shout at him etc. I mean how he could steal from her like that; try to make her feel guilty when she risked everything for him. I don’t like him but I understand why Edie, even if she should, can’t cut the link. What bothered me was the way she went with Asher to start with …. As a nurse she should have been more vigilant yes but even simply as a woman I thought it was too quick. .. and she give him her address even… really a bad example… worse just after she jump on Ti… oki perhaps when you think you will die you can do things you wouldn’t normally do…. Except that she did that with Asher a few days before…if there hasn’t been the thing with Asher I could have understood she felt for Ti but after… no I don’t approve and it’s not because Ti is a zombie. I guess she disappointed me. Asher is even worse in my opinion, I could understand his curiosity but not what he did to get an answers…
Now it’s what I think personally and in a whole she is a great determined, courageous character and I will probably love more as the series goes on but at the moment she is far from my favourite heroine model.

My favourite “character” so far is “ grandfather”…I love how he is protecting Edie and I’m curious as why he is protecting her, who or what he really is ^^ and why german…couldn’t he adapt itself to his listener ^^;; because if Edie has to take some lesson in addition to her nightshift she will be really busy.

It’s really an enjoyable series and if you want an urban fantasy a little different, if you want different kind of paranormal creatures in the mix that’s a good series to discover. I really want to read book 2 to discover more^^
