One Salt Sea ( October Daye 5) by Seanan Mcguire

Good Weekend too all^^

Seanan Mcguire is one of the few authors who can keep me so captivated by a story despite me being sick like hell or exhausted beyond common measure… this time didn’t change that and I couldn’t stop turning the pages, devouring Toby’s adventures… a great start for this year and I’m so impatient to read the next one though I’m also glad I waited since I’m slowly getting up to date with the release… so that’s mean resisting the urge to read them back to back without delay.

[On a side note, after finishing this one I had to read the novella that were set after this story and those I couldn’t resist…sadly I discovered that they weren’t my cup of tea and fortunately they are not essential for the series so you can pass them if you are not into f/f ( In Sea Salt tears ) or m/m (Forbid the Sea) but if you are interested you can check the review for those on my goodread account.]

Now this review will perhaps be a little short because I can’t reveal too much without spoilers but let see what I can tell you.

Happy reading!

Short description from goodreads :

October "Toby" Daye is settling into her new role as Countess of Goldengreen. She's actually dating again, and she's taken on Quentin as her squire. So, of course, it's time for things to take a turn for the worse.

Someone has kidnapped the sons of the regent of the Undersea Duchy of Saltmist. To prevent a war between land and sea, Toby must find the missing boys and prove the Queen of the Mists was not behind their abduction. Toby's search will take her from the streets of San Francisco to the lands beneath the waves, and her deadline is firm: she must find the boys in three days' time, or all of the Mists will pay the price. But someone is determined to stop her-and whoever it is isn't playing by Oberon's Laws...

My opinion:
October will never get a real reprieve, despite nearly dying several times on regular basis she has too much on her plate to rest. Now a Countess against her wills, she must learn that role, while taking in charge part of Quentin’s training, and less formally Raj’s. Add to that, the fact the Luidaeg comes to collects debts when a war is on the verge to explode and you have the recipe for a disaster.

Oh, disaster there are how could it not when children are taking from their homes, tortured and with their life threatened? October couldn’t let that kind of crimes unpunished, children are too sacred and if it means having to fight against the Queen or at least to be diplomatically correct and doing others things she would dreams of never doing ( like approaching water) so be it because before being a countess she is a knight.

I was really happy to see her having the start of a normal life even if I deeply inside new it couldn’t last and to be honest I didn’t like her lover’s choice but still I wanted her to have a bit of happiness…. I loved Spike and her cats which we just learned are really spies for Tybalt (someone had doubt about that fact, really?!), finding May, Quentin and Raj living (or nearly) with her was simply fabulous…it was a great way to see how she matured since the first book.

She also had to adjust to the event in the last book and how it affected her, that part was interesting and I wasn’t expecting it to be so difficult for her but Seanan managed to make the situation really comprehensible and described Toby’s feeling so well I just wanted more. In this book we learn more about the fae.. so far we learned about the land faeries we got a glimpse of others like the luidaeg and selkies but that’s all.  This time we learn about a complete new range of aquatic faes and discover that there are also some aerial ones nothing catch my attention better it was really interesting to discover them from Toby’s perspective.

What made this book even better was the constant presence of the cait sidhe Tybalt, more often in his cat form than I saw in the past.  He wasn’t his humourous self and he didn’t antagonised October but the situation was too dire for that. In any case he was loyally at her side, fought by her side and for her and never let her down ( the perfect mate I’m telling you). We also learn a lot about the Luidaeg and saw a more vulnerable side of her which drew me to her, she always was fascinating now she is more “human”… she suffered a lot and still do I think.

This book has heartbreaking moments, I nearly cried several time but the author balances all the elements in the story at the perfection and it was never too much or not enough. You get to see and feel things from October’s point of view… yes sometimes I wanted to strangle her at other time I wanted to hug her or cry for her but all along I wanted to be by her side. If you love dark urban fantasy with a touch of romance, fae and shifters  really this is a fabulous series, a must read however I can’t recommend you enough to be careful and read all the books in order ( include the free novella if you want it’s even better) it’s the only way to get completely immersed and have all the insights to follow the red lines ( but each book have some closure so far even if the ending just make you want more since it doesn’t answers all questions) this one was a perfect addition to the series with moving moment, adventures, magic and all the rest

Mercy Blade ( Jane Yellowrock 3) by Faith Hunter

Hello to all!

I decided to start the year slowly, oki the fact i've caught the flu helped but i want to avoid the stress, so i decided to start by reading some books i really want to because i loved the precedent so much i couldn't wait longer.... i picked the next in line for me in the Jane Yellowrockrock series by faith Hunter and while it was a good choice i could have done better. The best part is that this book works for all challenges i've entered so far.

Anyway let start with the first review of 2014, Mercy Blade by faith Hunter

Publisher: Roc
Publication: 2011
ISBN:  0451463722
Genre: urban fantasy
Violence: strong

Language: mild
sex: strong
Public: 18+
Source: bought

Short description from goodreads :

Jane Yellowrock is a shape-shifting skinwalker--and a rogue-vampire hunter for hire. But lately she's found herself taking blood money from the very vamps she used to hunt.

Things are heating up in the Big Easy. Weres have announced their existence to the world, and revived the bitter tensions that run between them and their old enemies -- vampires. As a trusted employee of Leo Pellissier, Blood Master of the City, Jane finds herself caught in the crossfire.

When Jane is attacked by a pack of marauding werewolves, she is thankful for the help of a mysterious stranger named Girrard. He explains that he used to be Leo's 'Mercy Blade,' a sacred position charged with killing young vampires who have gone insane. What Jane doesn't know is why this powerful assassin left New Orleans. And more troubling, why he's now returned. It's definitely not to make Jane's life easier.

My opinion:
Faith Hunter is excellent as always but I must admit that so far this book is the one I liked the less in the series. It’s a good one don’t misunderstand me however I’m not fond of universes were werewolves are depicted as crazy beasts and sadly this story focus on them while their description is of savage beast without moral etc… now it’s not that radical they have rules but they don’t follow them and while we get their history it really doesn’t sound fair to them.

Now the great part is that the author makes difference between the different kind of shifters not all of them are so crazy and I guess I can hope for a remedy for the werewolves then^^ after all we all can dream. So I did get interested in the story but this one was a lot more complicated than the first 2 books. Hard to keep up with all the investigation but it was well worth it. I appreciated that Jane was one man- woman and didn’t want to sleep around even if I regretted the choice she made…. Rick isn’t stable and she need stability but beast won on the attractive part I guess^^^. Leo seemed really instable and I hate him more after each book ^^, the way he acts with Jane, how he push aside his most loyal followers… really he can’t be trusted and so far I can’t even respect him but it’s part of the vampire mentality I guess. Bruiser just can’t leave Leo and is too devoted to him to be good for Jane but I think he is the more interested anyway

Molly and her so sweet little girl make some phone interventions and as always I love those they are so funny and protective. I couldn’t stand Evangelina since the beginning and I found strange to see Jane trusting her so quickly and easily.

I really loved the idea of more feline shifters and then the specific creatures ( anzu or grindy) are really interesting and I hope to learn and see more of them even if my opinion on Gee is still hesitant. I need more to decide if I like him or not but for sure I didn’t approve of his actions in this books even if I understand his motivation.

The ending was a little too predictable for me and quite heartbreaking but also a form of cliffhanger so I’m glad I have the next book ready. If you love this series you will love this book even if it’s darker than the precedents and some descriptions are really not for sensitive soul, you will just want more.

2014 has started and i want to believe it will be a fantastic year for everything.

2013 was far from a bad year even if it wasn't really a good one either. I did have several health problems i still must to take care of but despitye all of that i stayed positive ( most of the time ;) ) I didwhat i wanted on the social part ( a big thanks to the postal service that for once delivered  quickly (t least most of the parcels, some took a lot longer than the rest) - so far i have confirmation for the receiving of 99% of what i sent^^ GREAT! )

And i managed to finish my reading goals ( barely yes but i completed them^^).
Sports romance challenge 12/12
2013 TBR Reading Challenges 67books
goodread challenge 100books
reading romance challenge: completed
2013 reading paranormal challenge: completed

See i can be happy of my last blogging year, of course i still need to improve ( we never stop needing that), however i will put as one of my priority to balance better between life and blog i can't get as stressed as i was when something happen that put me behind my schedule^^.
Another goal i want to reach this year: listing my books. I started in 2013 and  i haven't finished even if my shelves are less in order than before so i want to take care of that when i can.

I'm also planning to comment even more than before when possible and for the rest i will see because i want to be lazy a little just a few day to enjoy this new year, avoid the stress and REST^^ i deserved it^^

Do you have any resolutions or goals for 2014? Happy for 2013 or happy it's in the past and want to forget? Don't hesitate to share
