A Ghostly Secret (Ghostly Southern Mysteries 7) by Tonya Kappes

Hello to all,

this week has some excellent release so i'm happy i can share my opinion on some with you as some authors trusted me with their book....Today i will tell you a little about  the new Tonya Kappes " A Ghostly Secret"
...i'm behind in that series but quickly catching up but if i have a few authors i should avoid reading in the evening she is one. Not that i don't like her books it's the opposite...when i start no matter the time i need to finish it once started and this one can be added to the list.

That being said, my review won't be too long to avoid spoiler as this book need to be read in order i can't recommend it enough ( and i can't tell why exactly without spoilers either so just trust me and read this in order)

Happy Reading

Description from goodreads :

Emma Lee Raines, proprietor of a small-town Kentucky funeral home, Eternal Slumber, is a “Betweener,” helps ghosts stuck between here and the ever-after— only murdered ghosts. After Emma Lee solves who murdered them, only then can they cross over to the Great Beyond, Big Guy In The Sky.

Emma Lee is up against a cold case that happened before she’d even gotten her “Betweener” gift. Not only is the ghost of eight-year-old Betsy Lynn Brady, but Mr. Whiskers Betsy’s cat needs to cross the Rainbow Bridge.

Betsy Lynn Brady has no idea who murdered her or why. With her heart in shambles, Emma Lee begs her sexy beau, Sheriff Jack Henry Ross to reopen the cold case because Betsy’s head is always stuck in a book and can’t remember exactly what happened to her.

Emma Lee learns real fast that someone doesn’t want her to snoop around the cold case. Can she help Betsy cross over and get Mr. Whiskers cross the Rainbow Bridge before someone helps Emma Lee check out from the living?

My opinion:
Really moving! i couldn't stop reading and i just wanted to hug Emma Lee.... however let's start by the beginning this book is the 7th in the series and  for this one i do recommend you read the precedent books first and some events needs to be read not just remembered. (Even if Tonya explains well enough what has happened etc  it's better to follow the series)

So this book is one of change for Emma, i can't tell you in details as it would be major spoiler but she needs to adjust to a lot of things at the same time at it's not easy for her....but it makes me admire her courage even more because no matter what happen she is not letting her " client", ghost client, down and it's even stronger in this case as it's about a little girl so it was especially moving and i did want Betsy to get peace as well as Emma.
It sure mixes suspense, moving moment with some humour as always and it's why i love this series, this time it's not only Emma's grandma but also a ghost cat that put humour when we need it the most.

The investigation is really well done, Emma is starting to open up ( just a little) and it just makes me want to jump on the next book without delay ( but for that i will need patience as it must be written first) really this is a great series with story of quality and for the lover of cozy mysteries with touch of paranormal i do recommend it!

Short description from goodreads :

When Fenix is flooded by psychic visions of a baby being kidnapped and prepared as a sacrifice, she goes on a desperate hunt to find him. The search takes her through a portal into the dangerous world of the Fae. Fearsome new and old enemies lurk around every corner, intent on stopping her. With the time left to save the child running out, will Fenix succeed when her newfound magical powers are seemingly stifled by the strange Faeland? If you like fast-paced action, a strong female lead, and a dreamy love interest, you will love this second installment of The Peacesmith Series.

My opinion:
The first book was surprising, this one keeps the excellent quality of the story! We find Fenix and her friends just a few weeks after the events in book 1 and there is a lot of tension brewing. Fenix still need to adjust to her new role and she has a lot to learn while trying to keep it a secret from anyone else.
Alda is a b**** since she lost her treasured motorcycle and is making anyone crazy with strange demands but in fact the situation is deeper than that as Fenix will know.

Fenix is really an heroine we love to follow, she is true to her heart and always protect others, she isn't telling her secret not because she doesn't need understanding but because in that universe where magic is illegal knowing someone has some is already a crime. So she stays silent to protect them.
Gaïus is her mentor but we can see he was still in training...he isn't bad but he is too centered on the peacesmith thing and doesn't realise that it could take different forms...i don't like him a lot not that he is bad but often he is more a burden than a help or at least he feels like it.

On a trip to try to calm Alda, Fenix touches a damaged car and has the vision of a baby....immediately she is decided to save him, no matter the risk and that leads her directly to fayland...not and peaceful place and more dangerous, a place where her magic is bound. So it's without magic and only her courage and the helps of her allies that she will try the impossible.

The rhythm is quick as, the time is running and we keep turning the page to see more so the investigation is good with some twists and it's a great story.
We see how being a peacesmith is natural to Fenix, in fact and she is doing the job....i guess i only regret she didn't speak to Petunia but then it's only the romantic part of me that would have thought that to be a great bonus.

It's a  series i do want to continue as we still have a lot to discover.

Score:  4/5

Ripley

They call me RIP.
I’m a killer. A murderer. A psychopath.
In the eyes of the righteous, I’m a monster, born of sin and depravity.
I want to protect her, but I’m not a good man.
I want to love her, but I no longer feel.
She gets under my skin, though, and has awakened something inside of me.
Something I’d kill for.
I’m not her savior—not even close. In fact, I’m worse than the hell she’s already suffered.
I’m her vengeance. Tit for tat, as they say.
And if she’s not careful, I’ll be her ruin.

Dylan

For months, I’ve watched him.
I’ve fantasized him as my savior, my lover. My ticket out of the hell I’ve lived in for the last six years.
I never dreamed he’d be my nightmare.
Had I known what he really is, I’d have never gotten in the car that night, but life is full of cause and
effect.
And sometimes the choice on offer isn’t a choice at all.
It’s the result of something already in motion, and we’re merely left to survive the ripple effect.

Tales from Harborsmouth ( Ivy Granger 0- Novellas anthology-0.5;1.5;2.5;5.5) by E J Stevens

Hello to all,

This week is sure to offer us a lot of great release after Illumination from Susannah Johnson, it's Tales from Harvorsmouth by E. J. Stevens that releases today.....if you don't remember it it's part of the Ivy Granger series from which i gave you my opinion on the first books ( yes i'm behind in this series but i will catch up.)

Novellas when not mandatory to follow a series are a great bonus, it gives us more insight into the past of the characters for example...unfortunately it's often only in digital which is why i prefer when they are bonus so if we skip them as print readers we don't miss anything capital. However when they are bundled together so that we can have all of them ( and sometimes new ones)AND available in print it's often a little treasure. I enjoyed Ivy Granger series so i couldn't miss this one but now it's time i tell you a little about the novellas inside^^

Happy reading!

 Description from goodreads :

In Tales from Harborsmouth, readers get a chance to delve deeper into the exciting world of Ivy Granger.

Ivy Granger is a psychic detective with ties to Harborsmouth's paranormal underworld. Too bad those ties tend to ensnare Ivy and her friend Jinx in the Machiavellian schemes of the city's teeming population of bloodsucking vampires and psychotic faeries.

FROSTBITE (Ivy Granger #0.5)

In this Ivy Granger prequel, join Ivy and Jinx on a disturbing case that leads down a dead end alley to a house ravaged by time and circumstance.

Everyone knows that there's no such thing as ghosts, but when a client claims that her house is being haunted, Ivy tries to keep her mind open and her weapons handy. If her psychic gifts and recent cases have taught her anything, it's that you're better off arming yourself for the unexpected. Anything is possible in Harborsmouth.

BLOOD AND MISTLETOE (Ivy Granger #1.5)

Holidays are worse than a full moon for making people crazy. In Harborsmouth, where many of the residents are undead vampires or monstrous fae, the combination may prove deadly.

Holidays are Hell, a point driven home when a certain demon attorney returns with information regarding a series of bloody murders. Five Harborsmouth residents have been killed and every victim has one thing in common—they are fae. Whoever is killing faeries must be stopped, but they only leave one clue behind—a piece of mistletoe floating in a pool of the victim's blood. The holidays just got interesting.

CLUB NEXUS (Ivy Granger #2.5)

A demon, a human, an Unseelie faerie, and a vampire walk into a bar...

These four intertwining short stories are set in Club Nexus, the hidden haunt of Harborsmouth's paranormal underworld.

Iced: A bargain gone wrong leads a highborn Unseelie faerie to life as an enslaved bartender with a taste for revenge.

Dusted: Being a highly skilled predator doesn't necessarily put you at the top of the food chain at Club Nexus. A southern vampire with a hankering for blood and wanton violence may have bit off more than he can chew.

Demonized: The demon attorney we love to hate has his eye on a certain rockabilly human. Too bad she's brought a crossbow loaded with holy water dipped bolts for this night on the town.

Jinxed: Just when Jinx needs a carefree girl's night out with Ivy, a smoking hot demon tries to buy her a drink. She really is the unluckiest human on the planet.

THRILL ON JOYSEN HILL (Ivy Granger #5.5)

Few places are as rife with opportunity or as fraught with danger as Harborsmouth's notorious Joysen Hill. Vampires own the real estate, and even the most ruthless human thugs won't venture there after dark, but when Torn gets stuck babysitting, he can only think of one place in Harborsmouth interesting enough to take a demon toddler, a teenage bridge troll, and a grouchy hearth brownie. What happens next substantiates the city's advertising slogan. No matter who or what you are, no matter how young or old, you can find your thrill on Joysen Hill. (less)

My opinion:
I love when author bundles together several novellas from an universe for me it gives an useful additional insight into the series and i'm happy this one is doing it and more.  Now some of the novellas can be read in any order, always better to read a series in order novellas included but in this case some are prequel and others gives enough information to satisfy a new reader without making him feel lost. That i absolutely loved it's really a great bonus.

Now since we are speaking novellas, i will give a short opinion on each one while trying to avoid spoilers too much.

Frostbite:  really good, creepy  would have it been perfect around halloween time. We discover a bit of Ivy and we see some of her limits as well.  Fast paced it's read very quickly.

Blood and Mistletoes: We meet again with some secondary characters we met in the main series like Marvin, Kaye or Jenna so it's really enjoyable and for a new reader the author does explain who they are and how Ivy met them so it was really not disturbing or confusing. The investigation is short ( this is a novella after all) but we get all  the right elements...i loved to see Ivy deep sense of Justice

Club Nexus: This one is in 4 parts/chapter that must be read in order as in each one we get the event from one point of view and deepening some aspect over others... very interesting....we discover more about the demon Forneus and if read in order we do see how much Ivy and Jinx have improved.
It's dark, is sure to have effect later in the series but can be read even if you only have started the series or read the anthology to this point without confusion ( or very little spoilers only)

Thrill on Joysen Hill: This one is very spoilerish if you haven't read the  first 5 books in the series so i do recommend you to wait until you have read those to really savour it.  Really it's better as it doesn't really focus on Ivy as she is busy doing something i won't  tell and we see a bit more of a secondary character we saw earlier in the series: Sir Torn the cat sidhe king.... he is a funny character i really love him so i was happy to read this but i really do regret not having been up to date in the series first...it can be confusing a little or letting us with more questions...as a result at this point it's the one i enjoyed the less in the anthology but it's still a very good one simply better for a reader of the series ( and one up to date) not the best at all for a new reader

Illumination ( Penton Legacy 5) by Susannah Sandlin

A detail though....the ebook release tomorrow on amazon so you can  still preorder or order it BUT the paperback is already available which is the reason i'm sharing my opinion today and not tomorrow ( couldn't wait any longer).
I love when authors keep their promise against every ordeal and that's what Susannah/ Suzanne did she promised us a conclusion for us the fans of Penton and she did! Not only she did it but she did it wonderfully ( full book of quality, ebook AND paperback for us  print lovers who love books matching in our shelves.)

Really even if it was only the reason just buy this book to support such a good author but then like i said and like you will see in my review this is really a book worth buying and if you are being in the series just get it ( and the precedents books are available cheaper this month as well so grab them before setting in a Penton reading marathon) so please makes this author happy it will means more good books for us later!!so preorder, order just BUY this book!

Description from goodreads :

He came to Penton seeking peace. Nik Dimitrou joined the Army to escape his family legacy, only to have his psychic abilities exploited as a weapon. Now, as a civilian, he turns to the bottle to veil the images that haunt his mind whenever he touches anyone—except vampires. With them, he has finally found a place. But as Penton moves into open warfare with the Vampire Tribunal, Nik finds himself a linchpin in the deepening conflict, not to mention a transformation in his own body more frightening than anything he’s faced.

She wanted to change the world. Shay Underwood watched her Peace Corps parents move from one third world country to another—until both died following an outbreak of fever. Driven to her own career in tropical medicine, Shay works to cure the disease that killed her parents—until a careless weekend outing draws her into a world far more dangerous than the diseases she studies: a vampire society engaged in human trafficking.

Two cities, two strangers, one world. With Penton rebellion leader Aidan Murphy making risky choices and chief vampire lieutenant Mirren Kincaid forced to take a leadership role for which he is unsuited, it will fall to two outsiders, Nik and Shay, to find a way for Penton—and themselves—to survive in this much-anticipated conclusion to the award-winning Penton Legacy series

My opinion:
Great!!!!! really the wait was worth it because this book answer all our questions....it takes place a few weeks after the events in book 4 "Allegiance" and we are immediately feeling for our dear vampires because they sure needs helps....Aidan is a shade of himself, Penton is tired but not giving up .... in fact no one is left unscathed in a way or another so we needed to know what would happen and we do follow all of them.

However to fully enjoy this, it's better to have read the precedents books, yes  the author does remind us of event, does a little recap but it's a series that keeps getting better as it gets deeper into the plot so i can't recommend you enough to start by book 1 and read them back to back..

Because of the situation our vampires are in this book is quite dark and it does have some very dark elements, the tension is high ( with what is at stake  it's a minimum) so i kept turning the page wanting to know more but thankfully, as the author is so talented to do, we have touch of humour very well placed to give us a little emotional reprieve between the twists and jump into the darkness. We see the evolution of all the characters we have come to love and some appears under a new light too....like our dear Mirren the leader ( againsit his will mostly but then it's his nature); Will still the strategist and of course Nik....our dear Nik has to face a lot once again but his heart never waver. Shay is the new character of this book and she is wonderful, talented, determined and courageous....the romance is well written and make sense perfectly timed and slowly building so we have our sweet moments among a lot of angsty ones...we just can't stop reading until the last page!

Really it's the perfect conclusion for the Penton series and even better it offers us hope and possibilities for spin off in the future so would couldn't have wished for a better one. I recommend it without hesitation!

Score:  5/5
