October RAK Wrap Up

Hello to all,
Fall has come but winter is already on our doorstep ( it was freezing this week even if two days before it was 20degres) and while we are heating our home, giving some love can also heat a lonely soul or a heart. With that in mind, i've send several handmade RAK this month again ( and once gain i did more that i planned) including bloggers outside of the US or Canada so it could be worldwide.  I've worked to be able to do more flowers than just a rose and some cute baby animals  and i'm happy to have be able to send some ( but the choice is not mine so i can't never know in advance)
Are you ready for November?

In October I received:

Darlene from Darlene's  Books Nook sent me Storm by Birgid Kemmerer. I'm so happy thank you  A Lot!

Normally Jana sent me something too but since it's not arrived yet i will add it in the next wrap up ( thank you too)

and in October,  i've sent :
( note: i don't take picture of the Rak i create before sending them so it's only if the receiver made one i can use that i will add it here so this post will perhaps be edited later to add some)

A handmade  bookmark  perfect for the season since it was a Skull and a Snake one to Aeicha from World Spelunking

A handmade flower bookmark to Bex from An Armchair By the Sea  ( i hope you like the surprise flower i chose for you^^)

The Night Beat (Necropolis Enforcement Files 1) by Gini Koch

^^ Happy Halloween to all ^^

Since it's a special day i wanted to offer you a treat in the form of a second review. I discovered Gini Koch this year thanks to Stella and i really enjoyed what i read so when i heard that she wrote an urban fantasy , one of my favorite genre, i was over happy...until i discovered the book could not be bought on The bookdepository -_- .
I've done a lot of contests in hope to get it and i won't give up but in the meantime i received an pdf copy thanks to Nat. Some weeks ago before her blog tour  Gini kindly offered this book for a reduced price and i was too impatient to wait more so thank you Nat ( and smashwords) and of course thank you Gini for thinking about your readers like that.

This is a perfect book for today!

I won't make you wait more so enjoy the first book of the Necropolis Enforcement Files "Night Beat"

Description from goodreads :

The majority of Prosaic City’s residents don’t know that their town exists on top of another place -- Necropolis, City of the Undead. For the most part, the two planes of existence manage to remain separate. And when they don’t, Necropolis Enforcement has beings in place to ensure the general human population remains blithely clueless.

Victoria Wolfe is more than just a policewoman. She’s an undercover werewolf assigned by Necropolis Enforcement to work Prosaic City Police’s Night Beat. Victoria’s comfortable working the shift where all the weird comes out to play, especially since her partner is also her perfect man. Or would be, if Victoria could ever work up the nerve to tell him she isn’t like other girls.

It’s hard enough being a werewolf in disguise, but when a creature from the Depths of Hell shows up in an alley preferred by junkies, bums, and hookers, it’s going to take more than just Victoria’s special gun and werewolf skills to subdue the ancient Sumerian demon. Especially when the demon is merely the start of what appears to be a major takeover attempt by the Prince of Darkness.

Soon all of Necropolis Enforcement’s Undead Brigade is involved in the fight to stop the Prince’s Major Minions from taking over Prosaic City and the rest of the human plane. But it’s Victoria who has to face the Adversary and figure out what intricate plan Lucifer has up his wings before everyone she cares about is destroyed.

In other words, it’s just another day on the Night Beat.

My opinion:
After a difficult beginning I came to really enjoy this book but to be honest the good score is more thanks to the second part of the book so keep that in mind if you want to give up too quickly.

What did I find difficult? First, I did not find the same humour than in her “ Kitty katt” series, not at all and I was disturbed by the fact that here werewolves are considered as undead. It’s explained in the story yes but I’m not used to that idea so it was not easy for me to jump in the story. However that’s part of the advantage in this genre you have classics werewolves, vampires etc but you can create your own versions of it. Even more I was bored by the way Vic has a tendency to want to go on her back in front of Jack as soon as he did something manly. I could understand why she was attracted but how it was described put me quite not at ease. I guess that like Ken and others something was off for me without knowing what exactly^^ (you will understand while reading)

Then the big twist happen, you could have guessed part of it yes, the whole thing I don’t think so and the magic of Gini Koch explodes. Humour, romance, action everything fits and you found yourself immersed in the story smiling or cringing depending on which side you are.
The characters are all important and it’s funny to find some historical figures or famous authors are undeads, I even wanted to check some in the dictionary (famous in the USA I’m sure but a whole less in the rest of the world so instructive even^^). I mean I’m working on a special tchullu session and reading about HP lovercraft as a lich was too funny. The rhythm is quite rapid but it works really well with the plot and the complete story full of action and romance with a universe promising.

A Good Urban fantasy for the fan of the genre but not for the ones under 18 and one who doesn’t want their religion being used differently that how they learned it. I’m curious for the rest of the series too^^

Score:  4/5

Vicious Circle ( Persephone Alcmedi 1) by Linda Robertson

Hello to all!

Since it's halloween i've decided to finish the month with witches first and the series written by Linda Robertson. This series was highly recommended to me so i've tried it and today i give you my opinion on it.

Enjoy!

Short description from goodreads :

A girl's got to do what a girl's got to do....

Being a witch doesn't pay the bills, but Persephone Alcmedi gets by between reading Tarot cards, writing her syndicated newspaper column, and kenneling werewolves in the basement when the moon is full -- even if witches aren't supposed to mingle with wolves. She really reaches the end of her leash, though, when her grandmother gets kicked out of the nursing home and Seph finds herself in the doghouse about some things she's written. Then her werewolf friend Lorrie is murdered...and the high priestess of an important coven offers Seph big money to destroy the killer, a powerful vampire named Goliath Kline. Seph is a tough girl, but this time she bites off more than she can chew. She needs a little help from her friends -- werewolf friends. One of those friends, Johnny, the motorcycle-riding lead singer for the techno-metal-Goth band Lycanthropia, has a crush on her. And while Seph has always been on edge around this 6'2" leather-clad hunk, she's starting to realize that although their attraction may be dangerous, nothing could be as lethal as the showdown that awaits them.

My opinion:
In this Urban fantasy we follow the adventures of a Witch and while it’s not the first book offering us this opportunity I still enjoyed it greatly because I don’t have a lot of them. It’s a complex universe and with the first book we are just scratching the surface.

The author introduces us to Persephone, a witch, who had not an easy childhood and lived with her nana, also a witch, now tables have been turned and she just took her in. She is not well versed in the witchcraft in the sense that she does it, now how it works, knows the rules but she is ignorant of the tales and legends and of some basics knowledge that could come in handy. We also discover that she knows nearly nothing about her parents and that she has a great sense of justice wanting to defend others like the waeres.

The waeres are made werewolves but in this universe it’s spelled waeres instead of were. That orthography element put aside we are learning in this book that they have a hard time. The existence of waeres, vampires and such is public knowledge but there is a great discrimination taking place. Human beings have become afraid and thus the ones being infected by the waere virus must keep a low profile. For example they don’t get the medical treatment they should because as soon as the infection in discovered in a patient the medical service send it in a special shelter supposedly taking care of them with a better equipment while in fact it(‘s just a prison where they are let to die. In the same way, as soon as a victim is a waere, the police drop the case judging the risks too high like they were not citizens with the same rights as others.
The fear comes from the fact that they are not born werewolves but were bitten and thus anyone could be bitten in turn (believable when we are looking in our history but so sad in my opinion)

They are, like often, groups formed by people who are either on their side: trying to help to make their rights respected, offer shelter etc. Persephone, more often called Seph, in one of them and before everything happened she offered them a shelter during the full moon to protect them, those safe kennels are kept secret from the outside world; she also write under a penname a column in newspaper about waeres to make them more acceptable in the public opinion.
On the opposite they are group of Anti, who think they are abominations, should be destroyed etc, those can be religious extremists or not.

About the vampires, we are not learning a lot yet, they are people against them too ( the extremists are not focused on only one magical species, as long as you are not human you should be annihilated in their opinion) but they also have followers and people who are under their charms and think them as no dangerous. There seems to be a hierarchy but apart that we still have to learn about them.

The characters are interesting, I loved to see Seph not being ready for everything and just trying to do well I also enjoyed her view on friendship. How she made mistakes by judging someone on his looks only but manages to put herself in question to change. The totems are also funny.
Johnny is really mysterious and dangerous, he is flirting with her a lot but he is also putting her in danger so he seems to have double standards. He is really secrets and now more about her than he told her. Their relationship is building in this book but they still aren’t sure where they stand.

I enjoyed this book but there are still to many unknown for me to be at ease with the series so I will be very happy to expend my knowledge of this universe with book two really soon. This book has some fun part ( Poopsies/ares is a cute surprise^^)but it’s also dark with a part of violence, the balance is well done though.

For a public adult and fan of urban fantasy.

Gunmetal Magic (Kate Daniels World 1) by Ilona Andrews

 Hi!
lastly i wanted to offer you my review of Gunmetal Magic, i book you have read a bit about if you did read my review of Magic Gifts ( here). So last creatures on today's menu are shifters, sorcerers and a special kind of vampires ( not sexy at all)

Ilona Andrews is on of my favorite author ( authors in fact since they are husband and wife writing under that name) and i absolutely love the  Kate Daniels'series so when i learned there was going to have a spin off i was happy and in the same time a bit hesitant...after all we can't be sure of a book without having read it and new series also means less kate Daniels books.

What i thought about it? You will have to read it ^^

Short description from goodreads :

The New York Times bestselling Kate Daniels novels have been hailed as “top-notch urban fantasy” (Monsters and Critics). Now, Ilona Andrews delves deeper into Kate’s world, and reveals its untold stories…

After being kicked out of the Order of the Knights of Merciful Aid, Andrea’s whole existence is in shambles. She tries to put herself back together by working for Cutting Edge, a small investigative firm owned by her best friend. When several shapeshifters working for Raphael Medrano—the male alpha of the Clan Bouda, and Andrea’s former lover—die unexpectedly at a dig site, Andrea is assigned to investigate. Now she must work with Raphael as her search for the killer leads into the secret underbelly of supernatural Atlanta. And dealing with her feelings for him might have to take a back seat to saving the world…

My opinion:
Lovely! I was a bit afraid at first because I usually don’t like spin off but this one is really well done. First,  you need to know that you could read it as an stand alone without difficulties because the world is well described since the beginning however reading with the Kate Daniels’ books make it even better because the chronological events are so well respected. Gunmetal Magic takes place after Kate Daniels 5 “Magic Slays” and you get a new look on some of the events taking place in the others books  thanks to Andrea’s point of view.

This book is the story of Andrea, Kate’s friend, after she was excluded from the Order for being a shapeshifter, in fact she is a special kind of one a “beastkin” meaning that one of her parent was an animal that got infected and started to take a human form while a shapeshifter is a human taking an animal form.  That difference means that she had to keep her identity secret from the Pack, because in earlier times all beastkin were killed on sight, until a problem happened and Kate had to take her to the Pack to save her life.

Here we discover her past before Kate, before the order….we learn of her difficult childhood and her suffering. That gives us a better understanding of her psychology. It wasn’t really clear before why she was so opposed to join the Pack when it was offered to her; she kept rejecting her nature like it was something alien now we can easily why it was something difficult for her.

I love her relationship with Raphael, it’s spicy and funny ^^ both being really stubborn and dominant it’s a explosive mix. Raphael must learn to understand her too and to accept her completely not just an idea of her. He idolized her at one time and was hurt, for the first time things did not go like he wanted and that was disturbing for him. All a misunderstanding made things really difficult between them but as he is fierce in battle so he is in love and he won’t give up so easily one battle lost perhaps not the war ( and for him all is fair in love like in war too^^)

I really enjoyed this book but I still regret to have see so few of Kate, she seemed too subdued for my tastes , yes she is hurt and in love but I don’t see her letting so room to her friend when she knows she is hurting . Yes I got to see her, yes she did fight and yes she also played but it wasn’t really her. Andrea is the main character of this book yes but some amelioration could have been done to Kate, or perhaps we will get those thanks to a future Curran point of view and that would be awesome.

Really a wonderful book and great addition to all Ilona Andrews’ fans. If you like urban fantasy, romance, action with a big dose of Humour and mythology that’s the book for you

Better off Undead (The Bloodhound Files 4) by DD Barant

Short description from goodreads :

Dark magic, unknown enemies, monsters of every stripe—FBI profiler Jace Valchek has seen it all. In this bizarre parallel universe, shape-shifting werewolves and blood-thirsty vampires don’t even warrant a raised eyebrow. That is, until Jace has to face what life might look like as one of them …

It starts off as just another run-of-the-mill assignment: to track down the rogue don of a mafia werewolf family before he upsets the delicate balance of the underworld. But Jace wasn’t counting on being bitten…and soon she’s fighting the growing wolf inside her with a startling antidote—vampirism. Stopping a bloody gangland war won’t be easy when Jace is feeling some new, and very inhuman, desires …

My opinion:
I really love this series but this book kind of disappointed me. The rhythm is still rapid, the action well described, the plot and investigation well written but the humour was not as present as in the first book while the romance is put up front.

Jace wants to help doctor Pete and still feeling guilty for what happened because of that she isn’t as cautious as she was in the first book ( and it was already quite a lot to say^^). Then when she is infected she is acting even more out of character though it’s normal, believable and really well written. I enjoyed seeing her when she struggles with new instincts and senses. However as she does her job she doesn’t see immediately who is behind, she doesn’t try to see the problem in global point of view when normally she is keener on discerning manipulations and such thanks to her profession. It bothered me a little.
The whole mob of werewolves is interesting and we get to see a bit more how it works however even there she is not at her best and since the first part happens before her infection that’s not an excuse. For the first time she is fighting to stay human and taking a lot of risks with that, it was a good way to go deeper in her psyche to have a glimpse of her vulnerability and all but it was done by sacrificing the humour presents in the first 3 books that lightened the atmosphere. This book is darker than the other so far.

While this book is all about Jace and her new problem, we also get to see a new side of Cassius and about his past. We also learn a bit more about the human enclave only cited before. We discover that their world is as bad as ours with their own kind of traffic of living beings. Charlie and Jace have a great partnership and it works better than before even if for protecting the other one has to lie sometimes. Finally too, Jace starts a relationship but until she had her mind on it she wasn’t suspecting anything.  Galahad is still there, cuter and s loyal, as well as the other secondary characters

It ‘s a good in a whole and i’m really curious about the next one, DD Barant keeps surprising me i just hope i will find again the same felling with book 5 that did with book 1-3.

Really a good series of urban fantasy with a lot of suspense and action in a universes complex but  described in a master’s way.

First Grave on the Right ( Charley Davidson 1) by Darynda Jones

Hello to all,

Only one day left before the end on the month so that means two days full of urban fantasy books to share and enjoy with you. Interesting no?

Today i will share 3 books with you but don't get used to it in november the rythm will return to normal. Which creatures are we going to meet today? Hum what about some shifters and sorcerers but let's not forget ghosts because so far they were  put aside this month so they get the priority.
So to start, a short review on a promising series with the first book called " First Grave on the Right" by Darynda Jones

Happy reading!

Publisher: Piatkus Books
Publication: 2011

Genre:  paranormal romantic suspense, paranormal romance, urban fantasy
Violence: mild

Short description from goodreads :

A smashing, award-winning debut novel that introduces Charley Davidson: part-time private investigator and full-time Grim Reaper

Charley sees dead people. That’s right, she sees dead people. And it’s her job to convince them to “go into the light.” But when these very dead people have died under less than ideal circumstances (i.e. murder), sometimes they want Charley to bring the bad guys to justice. Complicating matters are the intensely hot dreams she’s been having about an Entity who has been following her all her life...and it turns out he might not be dead after all. In fact, he might be something else entirely.

This is a thrilling debut novel from an exciting newcomer to the world of paranormal romantic suspense.

My opinion:

For a first book, Darynda Jones did it more than well, outstandingly well. I have discovered earlier this year that I loved romantic suspense and I knew I loved paranormal romance even before now Darynda Jones mixes both in a wonderful universe, I could only love it.

Charley Davidson is the grim reaper, the portal by where the souls of the departed can cross. Since she has the ability to see them and to speak to them since her birth, she helped her father, and now her uncle, member of the police to solve several investigations as anonymous source. However, now she is a private investigator, employed as consultant on some case, more easy to explain. Charley is a strong heroine because it’s not easy to be that different to everybody else and to keep quiet and not become angry when others don’t believe you. Her family isn’t supportive either except her father and uncle, that doesn’t really know what she is only what she can do, her stepmother is her enemy and her “ sister” let’s forget about sister love. I found her psyche really well written, accordingly to the information we get and what she is living.

Reyes is very interesting and a complex character, we aren’t sure to understand his intentions yet, we can get ideas when we learn of his past and his reasons to be there but just then he says something that make us doubt our first impression. The romance is present in a strange way at first and that was both funny and so moving, I can’t wait to see how Darynda will continue her story.

Really First Grave on the Right is a good book to recommend to the fans of this genre.

Score:  4/5
